Holt “surprised, frustrated” about his scaled-back role

Seven-time Pro Bowler Torry Holt is on pace for 59 receptions and 660 yards this season — just about half of his normal annual production over his 10-year career. The Rams are going more and more to young wide receivers Donnie Avery and Keenan Burton, and Holt expressed his unhappiness at the situation Friday. Here are some excerpts:

*Are you surprised that you’re not getting the ball more?

“Yeah, absolutely, I’m surprised. But I guess they feel that Donnie obviously has been stepping up and making some huge plays, and they want to continue to get him the football.”

*Are you frustrated?

“Absolutely. When you go from getting as many opportunities and touches that I’ve had in the past to not nearly as many, yeah, there’s definitely a sense of frustration.”

*Have you talked to the coaches about it?

“No, I don’t feel like I need to speak to anybody about that. My body of work speaks for itself. I’m not going to make a stink about it.”

*Are you still the same player?

“Yeah, I think so. I think I’m still getting open. I don’t think you can go from what I did last year and the years before and just be (lousy). I don’t think it happens that way, not with the way I work and how passionate I am about the game of football. Obviously, I’m getting doubled, but I’ve beaten double-teams plenty of times throughout the course of my career.”

*Do you feel like you’re being phased out?

“At times, I do. Who knows? We’ve still got eight more games left, and we’ll see how those eight games go. Once the season’s over with, then come back and ask me and we’ll see how I feel.”

*When you are getting the ball, it’s mostly short stuff. Isn’t that unusual for you?

“It’s obvious that I’m not doing the things in the passing game that I’ve done in the past. My game has always been, I’m a vertical guy, getting in and out of breaks, running deeper routes. I’ve been doing some of that, but not a great deal of it.”

You can read more on Holt’s comments from my colleague, Jim Thomas, in Saturday’s Post-Dispatch.

All for now . . .

If he would run with the ball after he catches it. That was always Bruce and Holts downfall after the SB win. Catch the ball and fall down…no yards after the catch.

Huh?

*Have you talked to the coaches about it?

“No, I don’t feel like I need to speak to anybody about that. My body of work speaks for itself. I’m not going to make a stink about it.”

Again, huh? If you don’t feel like you need to speak to anybody about that, what are you doing talking to the press about it? Do you think no one in the Rams organization will read this story?

Hey jealousblues…Tory was not complaining about anything…did you actually read the article? The interviewer even asked him if he had said anything to the coaches and he said no. Apart from that he only answered the questions asked of him. What article did you read anyway?????

Another interview another look at a guy that is a bit miffed. It’s just human nature. This offense is going through some changes. Torry gets the big coverage and Avery gets the easy stuff. Teams will take notice when Avery catches a few more balls and Torry will get his balls.

Ya didn’t hear Ike complaining when Torry was living off of the easy coverage that he got. Of course, I don’t think reporters went looking for it either.

This team is still a long way offensively from that Greatest Show. Some of the breakdowns on this O-Line are just hard to explain and they happen so regularly that Bulger still doesn’t look comfortable. You won’t have that high flying O till those guys start pass blocking again.

About the Greatest Show. I remember going to see that show in Sept of 2000. The Monday night game against the Broncos when Hakim and Holt danced down the sidelines together. Hakim also took a punt back. I told the folks around me that they better suck this up because this is not a type of thing a team can hold. That was a very special group.

Holt, Hakim, and Faulk all had 100+ receiving that night. Ike had 60 and was perfectly happy. If Kurt had not thrown three picks we would have destroyed the Broncos. Ended up being a 41-36 thriller.

This is not what the Rams need with a huge game looming this weekend. The fact is Holt is the Rams best receiver and sees alot of attention from defenses. He is a step slower and needs a little more time to get open which the O line and Bulger will not afford him. As they improve and Avery establishes himself, Holt’s ptoduction will increase. At this stage in his career he can’t just dominate a DB like he use to. Now he’s needs his team and they need him.

you just need to go out Sunday, catch a ball and run through some Cardinal defenders. that will get the playcallers attention. If all the Rams play with intensity through 4 quarters we will win. Arizona may take a slight lead but the Rams can overcome if they stay focused and intense the entire game.

I think its stupid not to talk to your coaches. To be proudful and say “my body of work speaks for itself” is pretty gay. If he talks to them and tells them how he can help his team then they probably put in more deep routes for him.

What really gets me are two things:A) Our dumb media stirs this crap up 2 days before the biggest game of our season for us, and B)Holt airing his dirty laundry for all to hear instead of handling his frustrations in-house.I mean, I just don’t get it. First off, I’d like to know who asked these “hard-hitting” questions, b/c, right ’bout now, I’d like to kick him/her right square in the b@ll$/face. And secondly, Torry has to be a professional here and politely decline to answer said questions like these. And he says he’s not trying to be a distraction? Sorry, bud. Too late. Between these comments, and the ones he made ’bout wanting to play for Carolina when his contract ends, I say, unless he can make an attitude adjustment, and not make comments that could be detrimental to team morale, to go ahead and trade him @ season’s end, for a O-lineman/defensive player, wideout or high draft pick. We, as fans, deserve and need a football culture where positivity reigns and “THE TEAM” is put first and foremost. If ya wanna be a T.O. or a Moss, and are so worried ’bout padding stats, then do us all a favor and STFU and get your bags packed. Bouncer Haslett: Enter stage.

We should be concentrating on 12:00 Sunday and nothing else. Is it a slow news day, why are the reporters asking these questions? Torry just say no comment and dont be so honest. Torry you are still awesome and we need to go win one this Sunday.

Mike, you complain that Bulger doesn’t take the time to scan the field for other options. And I’m sure you complain when Bulger gets sacked because he didn’t get rid of the ball in time. You can’t have it both ways son…
