Rams report card @ Washington
LANDOVER, Md. — Here’s one blogger’s grades for the Rams after Sunday’s 19-17 victory over the Washington Redskins:
QUARTERBACK: It wasn’t Marc Bulger’s best day statistically, and the offense didn’t produce a touchdown. But he was at the controls for the 76-yard, game-winning drive, during which he hit rookie WR Donnie Avery for first downs twice on third-down plays. The second time, the 43-yard gain set up Josh Brown’s 49-yard FG at the gun. GRADE: B
RUNNING BACKS: Steven Jackson ground out a tough 79 yards on 22 carries against a rugged Redskins defense. Jackson caught three passes for 32 yards, giving him a productive 111 yards from scrimmage. But his fumble at the Rams 3-yard line handed Washington an early TD. GRADE: B-
RECEIVERS: Avery had a breakout game, with four catches for 73 yards and the long, diving reception that preceded the winning FG. Joe Klopfenstein, the new starter at TE, had two catches but also dropped a ball. Holt’s team-high five grabs netted just 23 yards. GRADE: B+
OFFENSIVE LINE: Bulger was pretty well-protected (two sacks), but Jackson didn’t have much room to roam. Undisciplined G Richie Incognito took his unit’s mark down significantly because he was called for two 15-yard penalties, including one that turned Brown’s final kick from a chip shot into a long try. GRADE: C
DEFENSIVE LINE: DEs Leonard Little and Victor Adeyanju each had a sack. Little knocked the ball away from QB Jason Campbell, leading to Oshiomogho Atogwe’s 75-yard fumble return for the Rams’ lone touchdown. DE Chris Long also recovered a fumble. But Clinton Portis gashed the Rams for 129 yards, averaging 6.1 yards per carry. GRADE: B
LINEBACKERS: Pisa Tinoisamoa was all over the field, collecting a game-high 11 tackles according to the unofficial press-box stats. He also recorded a sack and forced a fumble. Will Witherspoon had seven stops, and Chris Draft three vs. the NFL’s sixth-ranked offense. GRADE: A-
SECONDARY: Atogwe had the long TD return, and CBs Jason Craft and Ron Bartell were generally sound in coverage. S Corey Chavous was strong vs. the run but got beat on a 30-yard pass to TE Chris Cooley. Jonathan Wade had two tackles at nickel back after Ricky Manning Jr. left with a broken foot. Manning had a sack. GRADE: B+
SPECIAL TEAMS: Brown was four-for-four on FGs, including the winner. Donnie Jones continued his standout punting. The Rams had some nice returns, although they didn’t produce any points. Coverage was good. GRADE: A
COACHING: The Rams played with increased emotion and fire in their first outing under Jim Haslett. They also shrugged off adversity far more effectively. The defense bent often but didn’t break under new DC Rick Venturi. OC Al Saunders wisely leaned on Jackson and got Avery involved. GRADE: A

Bulger a “B” ? He was absolutely pathetic. Take off your Rose colored glasses please. Marc Bulger was brutal !!
Amazingly, rams fans are pretty accurate about Bulger but dead wrong on Incognito. Bulger reminds me of (not sure if I should say it) Jim “dont call me Chris” Everett. Happy feet, back foot throws, and he looks scared back there. He’s not a superbowl quarterback in NFL Europe. As far as Incognito goes, he should be cut this morning. He almost cost the Rams the game, and has he ever done anything positive- have you ever watched him and said, “wow he’s a great blocker?” We sure have good success with guys out of Nebraska. All in all, we got a win- and it was nice to see guys genuinely enthusiastic about winning.
I thought Holt missed a few early that he should have caught. Bulger’s scramble that got called back for holding before the Avery pass would have been just as big a play. And he dove headfirst to get the first done. He’s been bashed on here for not being tough enough, but he took a shot to the head on that play and then made the Avery throw next play. I blame the first touchdown on Dante Hall. What’s the deal w/ him and fair catches? Couple weeks ago he got the penalty for blocking after signaling for a FC and yesterday he let those in the first half bounce. Ultimately it’s about wins and losses, and we got the W against a good team. Dallas will be a tough test, but maybe the confidence and momentum will be a good thing.
All this wrong foot stuff is nonsense — I have seen good and even great quarterback throw off either foot whether under pressure or not, and win some title games and even SBs. It reminds me of the “Mratz can’t control his timeouts” silliness so what ?
And I really don’t care what you may have heard a junior high school coach say one day.
I’ve been a Ram fan since the 70’s. I’ve seen the Rams play in 15 different cities and have lived in DC for nearly 20 years. I was on the 50 yard line in the 2nd row behind the Rams bench. What a fantastic game for the Rams!
Good: Seeing the team energy level was fantastic. High fives, congratulations, ENERGY - what a difference! Kudos to Haslett for changing the mindset. I’ve gotten so tired of the “collect a paycheck” attitude the past several seasons. It was incredible to see the different enthusiasm level. I’ve hoped for 1/10 the energy the Raven’s D shows and hopefully we have turned around this debacle so the Rams get back to playing football for each other, the coach, and the fans, not the money!
Bad: What was Saunders thinking when he didn’t call Jackson’s # in two consecutive series in the 2nd half. We were up by 9 and the 90k Redskins fans were completely dispirted - booing their seemingly invinceable team. Instead of letting Jackson pound the ball and contuinue to demoralize the cocky Skins, Saunders let the Redskins back in the game with passes or handoffs to Minor. When Jackson got the ball it was on a delayed handoff after Bulger faked a pass - instead of letting Jackson get 3 yards of steam going before getting the ball and hitting the holes. Most of the 4Q was painful - believing once again the Rams would find a way to lose a game - because Saunders tried to be too cute with his offense. Bulger did toss two long passes out of bounds during the game and on a critical 3rd and long in the 3Q, Avery was sent out on a post down the left side while the entire right side of the field was empty. A 20-yard play to the right instead of a 40-yard bomb would have worked just fine.
Going forward: Fire up the D, continue to celebrate and support each other after good plays, pound the rock, and let Bulger gain confidence as the team improves. Bulger will be fine (and play less like he’s in a bunker) when the coaching and line play give him the opportunity to succeed. Bulger has certainly looked bad, but he has the skills (and the long-term contract) to be our QB for several years. We also still need 1 legitimate knock the snot out of the guy (e.g. Rodney Harrison, Roy Williams, Keith Brooking, Ray Lewis) type enforcer on D. RB’s like Portis average 6.1 YPC because no one ever just flattens them to make them go to the sidelines - no Ram opponent fears getting hit!
It’s true the ‘Skins dropped a few sure picks, but unlike some of the other NFL games you catch from week to week, our receivers aren’t creating space between them and the defenders like we used to see. Avery brings that element and gives Bulger a little more margin for error, unlike Holt who seemed to have guys on his hip all day. Speed kills in this league and the only way we are going to see bigger plays in the passing game is giving Bulger time AND having a receivers that force db’s to lay back and respect the deep threat. That allows the Rams to throw those underneath passes and quick slants more effectively like back in the glory days, and set up the double move for long strikes. Hopefully the new drafting strategies we’ve been promised in the future address it and we can get more guys like Avery that can fly.
I don’t understand how St. Louis boasts the smartest fans in baseball yet from what I see people posting on the Rams, fans are nothing short of retarded when it comes to football.
I don’t understand why people can’t comprehend that Bulger is not the problem…
Bill,
I’ve always liked Bulger but a ‘B’????
Would the player’s association let Bulger give back some of his paycheck?
Do you think Bulger would give some back??
Bulger is simply mediocre, no reason to hate him, no reason to like him. Sort of a version of Scott Linehan really. Team does need a leader and it will never be Bulger. Still, let’s hope he can find a bit of his old form since we are stuck with him for awhile (Jeff Gordon says since his contract is all salary, there would be no salary cap issues if Bulger were to be replaced, just the loss of salary, which is substantial admittedly). We do need to consider drafting a QB in prep for replacing Bulger. Had the pleasure to watch the Arizona - Dallas game. Warner got slapped around good and didn’t have all that much time either, but stayed in the pocket and hit receivers. Just great to watch. Quite a few times Warner was on the ground as his receiver grabbed the catch.
Marc Bulger is still a joke!!!!! there isn’t another team in football that would take him (even minus the salary).
