Barring a setback, St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson will play Sunday

Cagey Jim Haslett wasn’t tipping his hand, even after running back Steven Jackson finished three straight days of practice by taking the majority of the snaps with the first team Friday. “I thought he did OK. I’ll have to see how he feels,” Haslett said. “I thought he got better as the week went on. I’ll talk to him and we’ll make a decision by the game.”

Jackson, who has been hampered by a strained thigh muscle, was listed as “questionable” on the final injury report of the week, which under NFL guidelines means his chances of playing Sunday against the Dolphins are 50-50. But here’s the real poop:

Unless Jackson suffers an unexpected setback between now and the noon kickoff at the Dome, he’ll be uniform — and probably in the starting lineup — for just the second time in six weeks.

“Having Steven back, with his running style and how vicious and powerful he is as a runner, hopefully we can get some holes opened up for him and run the football effectively,” wideout Torry Holt said. “If we can do that, it just allows everybody else’s game to be easier, especially (quarterback) Marc (Bulger). We want to run the ball well these last five games to keep him fresh, keep him healthy and let his confidence continue to build.”

Notes & quotes:

*Dolphins LB Joey Porter has 14.5 sacks, just a half-sack behind league leader DeMarcus Ware of Dallas. How will the Rams keep Porter in check? “Hopefully he ate a lot of (Thanksgiving) turkey and that’ll kind of slow him down,” Holt quipped.

*”Mr. Irrelevant” David Vobora will start at middle linebacker in place of Will Witherspoon, who has injuries to both shoulders. Vobora was the last pick in April’s draft, thus earning the “Mr. Irrelevant” moniker. “I’m excited for David,” Haslett said. “He’s a pretty smart kid, pretty instinctive. So, we’ll get a good look at him.”

*Haslett was 0-1 vs. Miami as head coach of the New Orleans Saints.

*Holt has caught a pass in 148 consecutive games, the fourth-longest streak among active NFL players and 11th-longest in league history. Holt has had at least one reception in every game of his 10-year career.

All for now . . .

The Rams should start Pittman — better to have Jackson fully back next week than risk another set back like he suffered against the Cardinals a few weeks back. He can play the last four games at full strength (against weaker D’s as well).

So the “Iron Horse” is going to give it a go this week? Gotta admire that - what a “gamer” - Ha ha ha. I’m sure he will be back on the sidelines the minute he skins his knee or scraps his elbow.

I would rather they play Pittman and Darby the rest of the way and see what they can do. We already know what the “Iron Horse” can do - 1-2 good games each season tops.

I was watching Detroit/Tennessee yesterday and wondering if the Rams might actually be able to beat Detroit, then reality set in and I realized the answer was “No”.

I am pretty psyched to get Jackson back. There is nobody in the NFL who runs harder than he does, and the Rams are a completely different team with him playing. I love how all of the “fans” cry and complain when a player is out with an injury that they have not a clue about and then keep on moaning and crying when they come back to play and try to help this team win. Incognito was right.

Gotta Love that ”Iron Horse” moniker by ”Roid Worrior”. That comment in itself makes my top 10 for 2008, and i’m sure the consummate team player Stephen Jackson has to be laughing at that as well. I admire pro football players as you have to be really the elite of elite to get to NFL level, let alone be known as a Superstar as ”The Iron Horse” but let’s face it, this is a terrible product that has been rolled out for all RAMS fans to take or leave. And I as a Rams FAN am embarrassed and refuse to lay eye’s or garner my respect for this sham. Sell the team to FOOTBALL people who love and respect not only the game, but also the tradition of the RAMS!! Nice Job ”Road Worrior” really interested in finding out what the total team player, superstar and all mighty IRON HORSE lays o come Sunday, my bet is He’ll roll the an egg and not dice!! Take a lesson from Marshall Faulk and become a real team player.

Let all the young guys play!! Lets see what they got. Usually the QB is the leader of the football team but its clear Jackson is the heart and soul of the Rams and when he went out so did their heart and soul. Jacson coming back indicates he wants Hasslet back and will try to win him a couple of games. I would like to see Holt Pace and Chavous back with the Rams in a diminshed role and at less pay. Chavous would be great on special teams at this stage in his career with that great intensity he brings. He just cant do it on every play anymore. Holt wants to win
