St. Louis Rams Richie Incognito apologizes — sort of — to fans

A day after chiding Rams fans — “they don’t know how to cheer, when to cheer” — Richie Incognito sought to clear the air Friday, two days before the Chicago Bears and their noisy supporters visit the Edward Jones Dome. Here’s what Incognito had to say after practice:

“Yesterday, I was not trying to take a shot at Rams fans. That’s the last thing I’m trying to do. I fully understand that this team has not given a single St. Louis Rams fan a single thing to cheer about this season. I understand where we’re at this season.

“All I was trying to say is, we’ve got Chicago fans coming down, there’s going to be a lot of them, they get excited for their football team, they get excited to come to the game. So, in turn, them coming to the game brings a football atmosphere that I’m used to, and that gets me excited . . . to go out there and get a win and keep them quiet.

“The fact of the matter is, it really doesn’t matter who’s in the stands, our fans, Chicago fans. We need all the support we can to get some wins around here. What I said yesterday was, the Chicago fans are coming down and they’re going to bring a buzz into the dome, they’re going to get it excited. Everything beyond that was . . . taken the wrong way.

“I’m excited to play in this game. I play my heart out. I leave everything I have on that field. And I want as many Rams fans there to enjoy it with us. We have not been good this year; I’ll be the first to say it. But you know what? I’m here thick and thin. I’m going to play my heart out no matter what our record is. And we are trying to get as many wins as we can, and we want as many people as possible to come out and support us.

“I just look forward to every Sunday waking up and doing the thing I love, going out and playing football. I just want people to enjoy the product we put on the field and get excited about what we’re doing. I want everybody involved in what we’re doing, because I’m excited about what we’re doing. So hopefully feed off me and get excited about Rams football.”

How about it, Rams fans? Is Richie forgiven?

Here’s what coach Jim Haslett had to say about Incognito’s initial rant:

“I think it’s bad (to criticize the fans) when you’re 8-2 (and not 2-8), to be honest with you. These fans are awesome. I love the city, I like the fans here. They’ll support this team. Obviously, I’d be disappointed, too, if we were 2-8. I’d probably have a hard time (as a fan) coming out and watching us also. That’s just the way it is.”

Haslett added: “I remember when I came here (as coach of the New Orleans Saints) how hard it was to play because of the fans. Obviously, we were coming in to play a good football team, and we’re struggling right now. But we need our fans. I know that there are loyal fans out there that come to games and support us. I know how hard it is to play here when (the Rams) are playing well and the place is rocking.”

All for now . . .

As much as I think Richie needs to just keep his mouth shut, I think he did bring up a valid point. The atmosphere at the dome stinks, and it has for quite some time. Hardly anybody gets into the game, and the games I have been to I could have fallen asleep at many different points in the game. When we played the Giants in the home opener, and when we were still in the game, I was scolded by fans behind me for standing up and cheering on THIRD down. I know there isn’t much to cheer about, but come on!! Just because it’s Sunday doesn’t mean we are at church!!

He sure likes to talk about himself and what he likes doesn’t he? He should be on the first train to cuts-ville.

We need to pull together as fans and support the entire team. Mr. Incognito said something that may be true but was probably better left unsaid. Maybe people are just trying to sell papers by promoting this matter. I dont blame Richie for speaking his opinion. I want to know exactly how the subject was brought up in the first place. Did a reporter ask him about there being a lot of opposing teams fans in the dome? Or, did Richie start talking about it out of the blue with no prompting. If certain veterans of this team would step into a leadership role and bring the team together it would be better.

I think there is not much to talk about right now in the media, so they are trying to stir up trouble. He did apologize to the fans, yet the title is he sort of apologized.

At least Mr. Incognito shows passion for the game. And, he may get some fans to get out of their cushy seats at the dome and make some noise. I just wish that some other players on the team had passion for the game and would stop smiling on the sidelines while losing and would actually care about the outcome of the game.
The veterans should show that they are giving 100% and stop avoiding
tackles, falling down so they dont get hit after catching a pass, or throwing into triple coverage. It is wrong that people are played based on the dollar signs on their paycheck on not on their CURRENT efforts and ability.

This stuff is pretty funny. I’m from Chicago and I’ll be coming down for the game with a bunch of friends. Sure hope we can make it a home atmosphere for Bear ’cause we are a pretty crappy team right now too. Any qb can thrown for 300 yards with ease and our D-Line gets no pressure at all. As bad as the Rams are, won’t be surprised if Bear loses. Either way, the beer will be flowin’ and it’ll be a good time.

It would appear that Mr. Incognito has provided us a gift. We can either contribute to further coddling these overpaid, egotistical jerks or we can simply turn them off and shut them down. Richie seems to have experienced another one of those moments when he doesn’t know when to shut up…much like his antics while at the end of the game in Washington. Obviously, someone has explained it to him that it is the FAN who actually pays his salary and if he alienates them, he might not have a job!

Well, I say good riddance to him, Jackson, and all the other queens of the NFL! I work hard for my money and I sure as heck won’t waste it purchasing anything that has to do with the NFL. This league is a shell of its former self as these guys keep proving that they don’t deserve to benefit from the REAL players who played before them and built the game into the multi-billion dollar business that it is today.

I wish everyone that goes to the game Sunday would emulate the Rams team. Immediately after kickoff, they should pack it up and leave. Just like the Rams…show up for kickoff and then disappear. Let see how they like the revenue that would be lost to that one!! Alas, perhaps Richie is right as I just don’t think the Rams fans have it in them to prove their point!

The first thing we did wrong was build a freaking DOME….When the Rams first got here, we had San Fran, Atlanta and N.O. in our division….no snow…could have had a major weather advantage. Not to mention the button down, arm-folders would be hesitant to go to a game in STL in January in an outdoor stadium….and they would have left it up to the crazy fat shirtless guys who have fun and go crazy…folks. Ah well….too late now.

I agree with you Andrew. The fans at the dome can be so blah. I too have been scolded by fans in front of myself and a good friend for being loud while on defense against Seatle several years ago when the game had meaning. We did not use any bad language or say anthing that was wrong. We were just loud and that does not fly at the dome.

Southernilliniguy - the fans do not pay Incognito’s salary. Fox, CBS, NBC and ESPN do.

Joe, I am gonna have to disagree with you. With an average ticket price of $83 and an average attendance this year of 62,000+ that comes to a little over 5 million per game, times 10 homes games that comes to a little over 51 million so I would say the fans pay a significant portion of the players salaries.
As far as the dome, the atmosphere, the fans who fold their arms and tell you to sit down, there is a great article on ESPN.com about this exact same thing. It talks about how in Indy, New England, Houston and all the teams with new stadiums have pushed the average fan out of the stadium or to the nose bleeds and that they have all turned into the wine and cheese crowd. I find the same thing in a good portion of the lower bowl and of course club seats.
I sold my seats to Sundays game back in October for twice the face value, have no guilty feelings or regrets for doing it.
We actually left at halftime during the Arizona game, just couldn’t take the lack of effort on the field.
To answer the question, no I don’t forgive Richie, he is backtracking plain and simple.
1999 through 2004 the dome was a nightmare for opposing teams and can be that way again if we just would have something to get excited about, I’m sorry three and outs just don’t do it for me.

waaaaaaaa…..what a bunch of Cry babies. Anybody on this board ever play football? Dudes like incognito are a rarity in football and every team would be happy to take him. wwcg…what would the cog do?

Let me ask you a question . . . what’s better, bad live football, or no live football? Get back to me on that would you?

Or are you so lost in trying to pipe up and express your disgust with the only pro football team within 275 miles, that you would trip on your own di@k to make an assenine comment . . . buy a clue.

And yes . . . I care a great deal about this team, and I show that by showing up at each home game . . . fans like you can stay at the sports bar or at home, and drink yourself back to the rock you crawled out from under.

— Tom
3:38 pm November 21st, 2008

there isn’t going to be many rams fans at this game, meaning the bears have another home game!! this may be a worse season than the Tony Banks, Laurence Phillips teams of the mid 90’s

Professional football players are paid entertainers and nothing more. If the show isn’t good no one pays to see it and those who are there do not applaud. Suppose I was the fan of a band and paid to see them perform in a local bar every Saturday night. If the lead singer left the band and the replacement wasn’t very good would I be required to continue paying to see this band simple because I am a fan? This whole fan requirement thing is ridiculous. Players sign contracts to be paid for performing at a professional level. The fans didn’t sign a contract obligating them to spend money and support a football team regardless of their play. If the players play well people will pay to see them and will applaud their performances.

Andrew,

I could not disagree with you more. The atmoshere at the dome is fine when the product is good. If you were at the Dallas game you would agree.

— Matt
4:01 pm November 21st, 2008

Matt,
I was at the Dallas game and you’re right, the atmosphere wasn’t that bad, which makes me wonder why a good chunk of the crowd left early, like they always do? Absolutely have at it and boo when the team isn’t doing well. That is your right as a ticket holder. At least if you’re booing, you’re there and if your there, why not stick around to the end when the team does well? Post game traffic isn’t that bad in this town, so why do people feel like they have to beat the rush? For that matter, try being in your seats in time for the kickoff.

I wish the hell i lived in stl cheering on the rams. They feed off of that. If u dont cheer u are just as bad as the loosing team. Im in ga and i will cheer them on till i die . GO RAMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jimbo,

A lot of those fans leaving early at the Dallas game were Dallas fans not Rams fans.
So besides popular belief fans of other teams leave early when their team is winning or losing big

— bantam weight
4:33 pm November 21st, 2008

Bantam,
I’m going to have to disagree with you there bud. Having a bird’s eye view of the dome (otherwise known as bad seats) I noticed it was just as scarcely populated at the end, win or lose, as it has been at every other game this year. Fans of both teams were heading for the aisles with over 10 minutes to go.

4:39 pm November 21st, 2008

hey richie we would cheer if the team didnt SUCK every game, every play, every sunday. i live in pa n my fav team is the Rams. every day i hear crap 4 it!!!im tired of the suckage!!!!!!!!!

4:52 pm November 21st, 2008

Hey, it’s happened before. If this game sounds like a Bears home game, I’d be disappointed too. The Rams obviously have a lot of work to do, but your team can’t always be good.

— Joey123
5:04 pm November 21st, 2008

I’ve been a Rams fan since 1958. First game I attended, was in the LA Coliseum against Detroit. Have been to all three Super Bowls!
Seems to me that Richie ought to beg for fan support to be louder than the Bears. Instead of whining about the lack thereof.

Wonder what Merlin Olsen, Deacon Jones or Jack Youngblood might have to say to Richie? For that matter, haven’t heard that Orlando Pace is down on the fans and he’s an All Pro.

— Jerry
5:07 pm November 21st, 2008

Richie, give us something to cheer about and we will cheer. Start playing with heart and the boos will stop.

— GoRams2001
5:09 pm November 21st, 2008

The bottom line is that when the Rams were good the dome was an extremely loud place and difficult to play in. Sure there are people who don’t get into the game and ask you to sit down but they are the exception rather than the rule and that kind of behavior will become minimal if the Rams begin to win again. I have been a season ticket holder from day one and we went through some difficult times early and the dome was the same way. It is just an excuse to bitch.

If you are winning you can play in a cow field. EXAMPLES: YANKEES AND RED SOX.

The problem occurs when people think they have the right to be obnoxious just because they paid for a ticket. I have been to other stadiums and it is not much different. If fact, I believe when we are winning we have the proper amount of enthusiam without treading on the rights of other.

It has been said many times before, “Winning cures a lot of problems”

lets face it, get over the hurt feelings and realize that we need fiery players like richie ,yes he makes boneheaded mistakes but who on this team doesnt? come on and name me 1 player who doesnt.andto top it off many of them are legends …in their own minds . I see richie playing hard ,yes he misses blocks but I also see him flat out flatten players many times also . this team needs players with that attitude and drive

“I was scolded by fans behind me for standing up and cheering on THIRD down.” You are right Andrew!
I grew up in StL going to Big Red games with my dad, and that doesn’t suprize me at all. The psl’s unfortunately give the wine and cheese crowd most of the tickets. Those types just don’t get it, and don’t want to get off their lazy buts to cheer THEIR team. Meanwhile the real fans are at home yelling at their tv with you.

— Ernie
6:03 pm November 21st, 2008

This guys is dillusional. He just doesn’t get it. Why would fans pay $50+ dollars for tickets to watch their team get blown out week after week, year after year. These guys get paid millions of dollars to play a game. Why would fans who make a small fraction of whay they make spend their hard earned money of this? This guys is way out of touch because all he does is play a game and get paid. Put a better product out there and we’ll come.

Hey Incognito… You backed down awfully fast, what’s the matter? Coach hit you on the soft spot in your head and tell you to shut your yap? You are an EMBARRASSMENT to PROFESSIONAL football players. What’s the over under for penalty yards on you THIS week? I’ll bet your good for at least 30 penalty yards all by your big boy self!!!

I think I would rather hear Incognito speak than Haslett. Do not forget the things Haslett has said about the Rams in the past. He is a loser and should go away. Along with the loser GM.

— Adolf

It’s one thing to compete and lose, but when you are getting whipped game in and game out that is another story. It is bad enough to watch your team lose, but the lack of hustle and desire and the team’s willingness to quit so easily makes it hard for fans to accept.

7:40 pm November 21st, 2008

I’ve lived in the metro east area my whole life. I grew up listening and watching the “Big Red” games. At the time I really wasn’t interested in football (my dad was and I didn’t get it) and then the Cardinals were gone. Along come the Rams. Big harry deal. So the Rams sucked for a few years and I still didn’t pay much attention. One year sometime before the 99 Super Bowl I decided to actually sit and watch a game and ever since then, I was hooked. I guess cause we were winning and it was actually FUN. So, I got tickets to a game one year and it was THE MOST FUN I had ever had! I don’t know, but anyway, I’ve tried to go to at least 1 home game ever since then and I would love to have PSLs but I’m not rich like some people. I agree with some people on here that there are a lot of people in the lower bowl that are just boring and don’t even seem to care about the game. Not sure why they’re there. I know the team totally sucks right now and has for a few years for whatever reason(s) but I am still a Rams fan and will be till I die. If I could go to every single game, I would and I would cheer them on no matter what. Oh, I don’t leave till the game is over either. (I was at the Cardinals game til the very bitter end)
Basically, I don’t want to give the team any reason to leave STL. If you can go to a game, (and are cheering for the Rams) then please go and scream your lungs out! Boo and curse if you have to, but just go for our team. GO RAMS!!!!

It was a really stupid comment yesterday…indeed, it prompted me to call the team to leave my season ticket account ID and leave contact information for my personal apology, which was not delivered (no great surprise). Nonetheless, I do applaud the team for not letting him just sit there without apologizing and backing off from the comment; and I even applaud Incognito for not refusing to accept the edict to do so, as some players seem inclined to do.
Ultimately, the fans do cheer when the team does something worth seeing, and it is really depressing to sit there while other teams’ fans are outcheering us due to their teams’ superior play. Hopefully the Rams will give us something to root for this Sunday.

There are six of us here in Commack , N.Y. ( Long Island ). We haven’t missed a RAMS’ game since the advent of Direct-v, first in local taverns , more recently at my home. Our general consensus over the last many years ? RAMS’ fans are incredibly whiny and fickle ,spoiled rotten. Sit in perfect comfort in a temperature-controlled Dome ,and are incredibly passive.I know Cardinals’ fans are among the best , just don’t understand why RAMS’ fans are so second-rate by comparison.

Hey Richie, I know how you can make up for your comments about the Rams fans. Try blocking somebody, for a change. You know, kinda get in the way of the defensive lineman, so he doesn’t beat Bulger to the pocket. And then, if you can actually figure that out, then pass that information along to Mr. Barron, beside you.

10:15 pm November 21st, 2008

The dude is right!
Cardinal fans…boring
Rams fans….boring
Always waiting for something to happen before they make a peep. Rather than trying to motivate with raucous cheering when it is needed. That’s what support is.
The Blues Arena fans were the best at cheering and getting the team to respond to the noise.
Wake up St Louis. You have short memories and if the Rams go you never have a team to squawk about again!!

Spoiled babies.

Not for nothing don’t give us apologies…give us some damn points. Give us something to cheer about instead of yelling about.
I am a RAMS fan from NY and believe me its not easy now with a Super Bowl (giants)and now Farve (jets) on the scene to be a fan for another state’s team. SO NO MORE EXCUSES and no more mouthing off to the fans.
JUST PLAY THE GAME AND WIN WIN WIN once in a while.

Richie Incognito should apologize to the fans by giving back his salary. It is obvious that he has not concept as to what a “professional” NFL player is supposed to do or how to act. The man is an embarrassment to the city of St. Louis and the NFL. He is luck to have a job where he gets paid what he does to “play a game”.

NFL players make mega bucks and are expected to perform. The fans fork out mega bucks, in comparison, to watch these guys. When the players don’t perform–as the Rams record attests–the players should not rip the fans. St. Louis has proven it will be there for this team but the past couple of years have been disastrous. Until management steps up and takes corrective actions, they have to expect the fans to be bitter. As for Incognito, he should already have been shown the road out of St. Louis–there is no room for such behavior in this town. If you recall, in one of the games we won this year, he nearly blew it with a STUPID penalty thus making a pitch shot field goal an over 50 yard field goal. He should have been gone after that game. Why do we stick with arrogant bums like him???
