Isaac Bruce recalls his Super Bowl-winning TD for St. Louis Rams
Normally a man of few words during interviews, Isaac Bruce apparently was feeling nostalgic when he spoke with reporters here this week on a conference call. When asked what he remembers about his game-winning touchdown in Super Bowl XXXIV, Bruce waxed poetic:
“I remember the fog that was kind of lingering over after the halftime show. I remember seeing the intensity level of both teams skyrocket, especially after (Titans) Coach (Jeff) Fisher called his team together and kind of pointed across the field to look at us and thought we were celebrating a little prematurely. But I knew my opportunity was going to come in that game and I knew Coach (Mike) Martz was going to give me a chance to make a play and I know upon running the route, when I heard the call in the huddle, “twins right, h-right, h-balloon”, I knew the 9-route was coming to me, so I made sure that I did everything I was coached to do as far as lining up right, exploding off the football and just running until I heard the whistle blow.
“And as I turned around I saw the ball coming, it was kind of underthrown and I made the adjustment and as I made the adjustment kind of slowed down and the guy covering me he ended up trying to do the same thing and he ended up falling. I guess he was tripping over the turf. And when the catch was made I pretty much saw everything in slow motion. I saw guys chasing, I saw guys blocking, I saw Az (Hakim) blocking, I saw people on the front row of the (Georgia) Dome, their eyes were like bugging out.
“The funny thing was, I couldn’t hear anything; it was total silence. I saw people in the end zone. I saw myself on the Jumbotron. I saw on the Jumbotron Orlando Pace with his big paw up in the air celebrating a touchdown before I even got there. So it was interesting how everything just slowed down. The first guy that made contact with me was Ricky Proehl and Torry Holt, and we have a great picture of that threesome right there in the end zone. And that’s what I remember from it.”
Now, if you’re a Rams fan and that doesn’t send chills up your spine, well . . .
By the way, Bruce has a chance to achieve two major milestones Sunday, when he and his 49ers teammates visit the Edward Jones Domes. With six catches, he’ll become just the fifth player in NFL history to amass 1,000 in a career. With 60 receiving yards, Bruce will reach 14,935 and move past Tim Brown into second place, behind only Jerry Rice.
All for now . . .

Wow!!!!
1,000 receptions, 15,000 yards……HOF!
MAN that was awesome! still have chills! IKE is the man and will always be my fav WR of all time, love the guy, JUST ONE ? for HIM….WHY IKE, WHY the 49ERS!!??!!!
The single best sports memory I have in 40 years on this earth.
Thank You Isaac!
I wish Ike was still a Ram. I look forward to hearing the BRUUUUUUUUUCE when he makes some catches this sunday @ the Dome
I was there, in the very top of the upper deck at about the 20 yard line. That haze Ike mentioned had made it up to us during the second half, but OH did that play make me forget all about it. Wonderful moment.
The scott linehan legacy kicking this guy to the curb a year too soon. He should have been able to retire a Ram on his own terms. Man when you have to hear Chad Ocho Johnson this, T.O. that you appreciate Isacc and his approach even more. He’s the Walter Payton of receivers in attitude and performance.
I have a photo of Bruce sprinting into the endzone on that play. I sure miss those days!!
My wife and I were there at the Georgia Dome, sitting mid-level, about the 5 yard-line where Mike Jones made The Tackle of Kevin Dyson. We had to buy tickets from an independent vendor and they cost a fortune but were worth it:
With 1:54 left in the game, we saw Warner throw the ball deep. We looked down the side-line to our right, watching Bruce step inside the defender – It was Anthony Dorsett, wasn’t it? – and then race to the endzone for the touchdown. We were never more excited at a sporting event; until the end of game, of course.
At the dome we bought a Super Bowl XXXIV Christmas ornament that we hung on the tree last week, remembering this great play.
Thanks so much, Rams!
The “petty” 2-12 Rams organization are not going to announce over the PA any of these milestones should Ike acheive them @ the Dome. Issac’s got too much class to be a part of this Rams team and organization. He should be glad he’s gone!
