During a get-together with reporters Tuesday, Rams GM Billy Devaney outlined the process for selecting the next Rams head coach. Here are the highlights:

*A three-man committee will screen the candidates. That panel will consist of Devaney, longtime NFL personnel ace Bobby Beathard and Lawrence McCutcheon, former Rams running back and currently the team’s director of player personnel.

*Marshall Faulk and Dan Dierdorf have agreed to serve as advisers for Devaney. He cited their contacts throughout the league through their media work (Faulk with the NFL Network, Dierdorf with CBS), plus their familiarity with the franchise and his trust in their ability to evaluate possible candidates.

*John Shaw, who has resigned as Rams president but will be retained as a consultant, will sit in on the final interviews and ask questions.

*Owners Chip Rosenbloom and Lucia Rodriguez, and perhaps Stan Kroenke, will meet with the finalists and “express their opinion,” Devaney said. “But when it’s over, they’ll let me make the decision.”

Other notes…

*Jim Haslett already has been deemed a finalist.

*As reported in Tuesday’s Post-Dispatch, Packers assistant head coach/linebackers coach Winston Moss will be interviewed this week.

*Devaney will consider a college coach only if he’s had experience in the NFL.

*Experience as a head coach or even a coordinator are not prerequisites.

All for now . . .

Well, it looks like all the kings horses and all the kings men are going to try and put this broken team back together again. Can I be involved in this process too? How in the world are all these people going to be able to agree on whos best for this job? Lets call Jackie Slater and Deacon Jones. And how about Jack Youngblood? Is John Madden available? Maybe all those guys working together can coach this team. Marshall Faulk and Lawrence McCutcheon can coach running backs. Dan Dierdorf can coach the linemen. We already have Henry Ellard for recievers. Haslett can stay and coach linebackers. Is that ok with Mr. Shaw? All joking aside, this is going to take a while and I doubt the Rams will be much better next year. To many teams are looking for the best guys available right now. And BIG money will be spent for names like Cowhler. Goodluck guys. You’re gonna need it.

The big dollar talks and if what we have read that the Rams are not willing to pay a good salary to perhaps lure a time tested high profile HC now available, most recently Mike Shanahan, if and only if they are good fits for the Rams, then don’t expect to get the best candidate available. Coaches such as Tony Dungy, John Fox, Tom Coughlin and Bill Belichick command hugh salaries because they are good. Chip Rosenbloom better learn this fact very soon or go back to his movies in Hollywood.

The only way I could feel comfortible with bringing Haslett back is if they cleaned house with the coaching staff and allowed him the opportunity to hand pick his own staff.

As the process is outlined here, it seems pretty straight-forward. Beathard and McCutcheon have some say, Faulk and Dierdorf offer only advice, and Owners ask questions. The key is Devaney’s comment, “But when it’s over, they’ll let me make the decision.” If they follow this plan it should move quickly and be effective. Let’s just hope they follow the plan. They biggest problem the Rams have had since 2000 is structure or, at least, one that is understandable. This one has accountablility. Let the games begin…

Bottom line: Rams lost 9 in a row to end the season under Haslett and weren’t any better with him as def. cord. to start the year. Needless to say the team isn’t responding to him and weren’t competitive. We need a fresh start and should look at a young aggressive guy to come in and change the mindset. I think we need a good draft. This team hasn’t has any success with draft picks in quite some time. A few players over the last ten years is why we are failing on the field. I hope it turns around this year.

A proven winner is needed to revive this franchise and I haven’t heard any names being considered that make me think Chip is willing to pay for a top rate coaching staff. Let’s face it, Chip’s heart is as a Hollywood “producer” and he really doesn’t care about the Rams - and with his tax problems, he doesn’t have the money to hire a top rate coaching staff. Kroenke has the money, but has lost interest in the team now that he knows he will never be able to own the team. Chip would love to sell the team, but the other NFL owners won’t let him sell it for less than $800 million - the price they’ve set as the value for an NFL franchise. Chip owns 51% which means someone has to come in with at least $400 million to buy his stake. A lot of money - especially in an extremely bad economy. Don’t be surprised if Chip ends up paying for a cheap assistant coach or re-hires Haslett. Paying for a top flight coaching staff costs a lot of money, and Chip doesn’t have it. Kroenke had that desire ten years ago and paid for Vermeil and all his high paid coaches, but that situation doesn’t exist any more. It’s going to be a long, long, sad stretch of losing for this franchise until Chip sells to a wealthy savior.

Devaney and Company:

I trust Faulk, and McCutcheon, but acquiring coaches from losing programs isn’t a good formula to bring about a winning tradition. Coaches that bounce around from different teams, also means they weren’t begged to stay.

Dallas wide receivers coach Ray Sherman: did anyone in Dallas do a good job with those receivers.

Miami assistant head coach Todd Bowles: I’m thinking this guy is a former DT, (not sure). Didn’t Linehan come from Miami after an 8 win season.

Green Bay assistant head coach Winston Moss. I don’t know this guy, but without Farve, Green Bay isn’t that good.

Head Coach Names that are of interest, Cowher, Shanahan, Fassel,Vermeil, and Ron Riveria.
Offensive Coordinators Martz, Saunders.
Defensive Coordinators Riveria, Rex Ryan, Lebeau, Wade Phillips

It’s not an easy decision, and I don’t have the answers, but going with a winning tradition is the best formula. Get someone in place before the College Allstar game. We missed out last year.

p.s. you can’t run or pass unless you have the blockers up front.
DB’s will always look weak, if you can’t provide pressure.
Acquire a real MLB, let Witherspoon move outside.

am I reading the same paper??? didn’t another headline state that Chip R. said money is no object for a good coach?? and the teams not going anywere. We had better keep the good old vets like holt untill we develope new guys. I also think it’s nice to see football guys making desions. But it’s going to be awhile…

Hire Shanahan? Are you crazy? Mike Shanahan’s coaching never WON anything. He owes his positive record and 2 super bowl titles to John Elway. Check out his record since Elway left.
