MOBILE, Ala. _ League sources told the Post-Dispatch Wednesday morning that the deal to bring Ken Flajole to St. Louis is done. The one-time assistant coach at the University of Missouri has joined the Rams as defensive coordinator on head coach Steve Spagnuolo’s staff.

On Tuesday evening, Philadelphia assistant coach Pat Shurmur was hired as Rams offensive coordinator.

The next hire could be special teams, where the Rams appear to be zeroing in on Paul Ferraro, a college teammate of Spagnuolo’s who has spent the past three seasons coaching special teams at Minnesota. The Rams have asked permission to interview Ferraro.

Flajole, 54, is the linebackers coach for the Carolina Panthers, where he has spent the past six seasons. His prior NFL stints included four seasons with Seattle (1999-2002) and one season with Green Bay (1998). He coached at Mizzou from 1989-93, and for part of that time was part of a Bob Stull staff that included current Eagles head coach Andy Reid.

Sounds like he is hiring friends….sound familiar? I think Spags was the best hire available, but I hope we don’t end up talking about FOSS’s.

How could Mizzou be this bad back then with coaches like Andy Reid and Ken Flajole on staff? Unless it was due to poor leadership from the top. Curious on how they managed to turn things around in the pros.

I would like four names in the free agency. I would like to see a tough defensive front seven team with a good veteran center for the offensive line, get Napolean Harris (UFA, MLB Vikings), Matt Birk (UFA, C Vikings), James Butler (UFA, SS Giants), Kendrick Allen (UFA, DT Vikings) move Adam Carricker to DE (These moves would make us big and more athletic up front and move Little to Strong Side linebacker or Backup DE and use the first pick on an OT and 2nd pick on a linebacker. James Butler is a Giant and Kendrick Allen is an ex-Giant! This is a cap friendly situation also. Does anyone agree or have alternatives?

Here we go again with the friends of SS. One big liability I heard about the Vikings this past year was the special teams were awful, that their HC could be in trouble because the special teams gave up a bunch of big plays. I hope I am wrong because Al Roberts (Rams Special teamc coach) has done a good job.

Ed….Sounds like a good tactic to jump start their D. Kind of want to see a list of free agents who are not restricted or who will not be tagged with franchise designation. Mitch……Don’t fret over the cronyism that Spags is showing us. All of these guys bring along fellows that they have worked with along the way. Networking like this is part of many organizations. I see it everyday at my job with a large company. People bringing folks with them from other posts as they rise through the ranks is a common practice. Have a little faith in Spags judgement.

RE: Weezer21’s comment– The difference is “Talent”. Mizzou has taken on a new path of success because now we are getting kids knocking down the door to play there. Before, Mizzou was almost considered a step down or last option. You can coach the heck out of 2nd or 3rd rate athletes…but it only goes so far. **Rams please take note of that last point.

Dan - Spags isn’t getting FOSS’s. He’s getting coaches he knows, who are from winning/good franchises. Linehan’s freinds were from Lions and Saints, both bad franchises.

Also in Ferraro’s 1st 2 seasons with the Vikings, their special teams ranked in the top 10.

Yeah, I also don’t get where all the questioning of a coach hiring friends he has in the business or coaches he has worked with in the past comes from, and why people view it as a negative. You want continuity in your staff. You want guys to be instilling the philosophy that you want to get across to your players. He obviously feels like these guys will help him do that. Not to mention that they come from teams that have made multiple playoff appearances & runs this decade. Just lay off & have a l’il “faith!” See Spags, I’m payin’ attention 2 the things you are a preachin’, buddy!

But hey, we all know he’s been a very successful D-coordinator. Let him assemble his staff, his player personnel, let Billy run the draft again & let’s just see how this thing plays out. Don’t become a lemming already. I mean, I know that cliff looks tempting to jump off of, but, come on, cut the guy some slack, already.
