St. Louis Rams ask to interview Steve Spagnuolo
New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo is in line to become a third finalist in the Rams’ head-coaching search. The Rams formally requested permission Monday morning to interview Spagnuolo, league sources told the Post-Dispatch. Getting permission from the Giants is mere formality; since they’ve already granted permission for Spagnuolo to interview with Denver and the New York Jets, the Giants cannot block St. Louis’ request.
League sources also told the Post-Dispatch that the Rams are trying to interview Spagnuolo on Thursday, probably in Los Angeles as one of the finalists for the job. The Rams are scheduled to interview Minnesota assisant head coach-defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier on Tuesday in LA. Current Rams coach Jim Haslett already has had his finalist interview.
Spagnuolo, 49, became available Sunday afternoon when the Giants lost to Philadelphia 23-11 in an NFC divisional playoff game. He has been the Giants defensive coordinator for two seasons, after spending eight seasons as an assisant coach with Philadelphia.

Go Devaney. Go Devaney. It’s your birthday. It’s your birthday. Go. Go. Go.
Make the right decision. Haslett has got to go. Spags, Frazier, or Ryan have got to be considered better candidates. I don’t see Haslett interviewing for any other head coaching jobs. On top of that, from Haslett’s past, he is an average head coach at best. The sky is the limit for the other 3.
I’m still wondering who the mystery candidate is?
The only goal of any NFL team should be to win championships. Hazlett may be a nice guy but he has never done anything but produce competitive teams. I would rather take a chance on a new guy who has been part of consistently successful organization or championship team than a coach who only know mediocre success. Leslie Frazier is supposed to be the next Mike Tomlin. Well Mike Tomlin was handed a pretty good team in Pittsburgh with good coordinators in place. Leslie will not be and what success has Minnesota really had? We need defense first so bring on Sags or Ryan and let Hazlett go home.
Please, please, please get spags!!!!
I think that’s great! But what about Bill Cowher, Mike Shanahan, Mike Holmgren or asking Jimmy Johnson to leave Fox to rebuild the Rams through the draft?
I dont like Spags, zero sacks in 3 games against philly and do the rams really want to hire another hot coordinator without experience. I hate the idea. also how come no other team is hiring this guy. He goes on more interviews than any coach i know. The jets already said that they were not impressed with him. He has interviewed for 3 other teams and not one offer. Hire Fassel and Dom Capers for the DC and we will win. HC with experience is the best option.
Spags will make a great head coach. And people’s facts are all wrong. He in fact was offered the Redskins job last year and turned it down…and he doesn’t go on many interviews because this is the first year he’s even really able too (because of the SB last year). And, the Jets are clowns and too stupid to hire this guy. He will win year in and year out if we’re lucky enough to get him.
If I were the Rams/Davaney… I would talk and confer with “Michael Strahan”because he excelled in that NY defense that won a “SUPER BOWL..against the so called at the time….powerful New England Patriots that “we” all know the history with the Rams in that 2002 super Bowl… about Coach Spagnuolo about …inside the locker room and anything about being able to be “head coach” and to lead a bunch of men in the NFL into a “dinesty” future franchise…. to “SUCCEES”!!! P.S. Michael Strahan could be the insite interview that could get the future Rams over the edge in this very competive Head Coaching search. Go Ram always!!!!!
I want the Rams to be a WINNER again. What about Marty Shottenhiemer? Marty has been in the playoffs more than he has not been in the playoffs.
We took a shot at an unproven coordinator with the last coach we hired (linnehan). That didn’t work. Jim Haslett has produced one of the worst defenses in the league the past 3 years. Spend some money and get a proven winner.
I also like the idea of bringing Mike Martz back as offensive coordinator. Go Rams!
Guys,
Big Giant fan here…the year Fassel took us to the Super Bowl…we were and AVERAGE team at best…if you recall, we were 5-5 and then he GUARANTEED we would make the playoffs….then we went on to Super Bowl. The guy has like a 56-53 record with three trips to the playoffs and was Coach of the Year. Plus, without going into long of a story, I actually had personal contact with the guy and he is a class act. If you cannot get Cowher or Parcells-Fassel is a no brainer. I do not know how you could possibly consider another unproven coordinator after the Linehan debacle…
PS-Haslett is a nice guy but there is no possible way you can bring back a guy who lost his last 10 games….
Leslie Frazier is the only one for head coach,he is another Mike Tomlin..Billy needs to hire his OWN coach not Haz
Haslett needs to be the coach next year. I want the guy who has been through the last few years and still wants to be here, The Rams don’t need a savior. The Rams need a guy who knows what the problems are and has a plan on how to fix them. There is no quick fix for years of having no player development folks. These drafted players that come here and fail to produce then go to other teams and become good players should show you what the failures are here in St. Louis. Pick Haslett, invest in player development, and grow the program into the monster it can be. Oh, and ignore the local media, there is not one local sports guy that could lead rats off a sinking ship much less make a logical argument about football.
playing with fire waiting for Thursday to interview Spags…..two years with GIANTS , eight years with Eagles , the man knows DEEE-FENSE …bring him in immediately , open the checkbook , tell him fill in the amount he wants , and sign on the dotted line …..A S A P please, and end the side-show !!!
Playing with fire waiting for Thursday for Spagnuolo….TWO yrs. with Giants , EIGHT yrs. with Eagles = one helluva defensive pedigree.Get out the check-book , show him where to sign , and hand him the pen.Let’s end the theatrics, our guy is available , let’s grab him , and move on.
If we followed what everybody said we would try to hire every body and then wouldn’t hire any body. Some people are still suggesting that we hire Cowher and Schottenheimer even though they have stated that they won’t coach in 2009.
Some are saying don’t hire Haslett because he lost 10 games. Others are thinking like I am thinking; i.e., he knows the personnel and the organization and knows what needs to be done to improve this team. True his defense wasn’t good, but he didn’t have free rein to do everything he wanted.
Then there are those who say hire Spagnuolo right now and others who say don’t hire him. I’m thinking he might be a good hire and maybe a sought after hire. Bernie Miklasz said on his show that Giants DC’s have gone on to be good head coaches. Also Spagnuolo is from the same part of the country as Devaney and is a friend of his. Might be a good fit.
Some say Leslie Frazier might be as successful as Mike Tomlin. Others say Tomlin came into Pittsburgh with a good OC and DC in place. Frazier wouldn’t have that here; so they don’t think he will be like Mike Tomlin with us. Still, he seems like a pretty good choice.
Not a lot has been said about Rex Ryan in this thread, but if Baltimore wins again, we might have to wait too long for him. It sounded as if the Jets had a lot of interest in him.
