New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo is in line to become a third finalist in the Rams’ head-coaching search. The Rams formally requested permission Monday morning to interview Spagnuolo, league sources told the Post-Dispatch. Getting permission from the Giants is mere formality; since they’ve already granted permission for Spagnuolo to interview with Denver and the New York Jets, the Giants cannot block St. Louis’ request.

League sources also told the Post-Dispatch that the Rams are trying to interview Spagnuolo on Thursday, probably in Los Angeles as one of the finalists for the job. The Rams are scheduled to interview Minnesota assisant head coach-defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier on Tuesday in LA. Current Rams coach Jim Haslett already has had his finalist interview.

Spagnuolo, 49, became available Sunday afternoon when the Giants lost to Philadelphia 23-11 in an NFC divisional playoff game. He has been the Giants defensive coordinator for two seasons, after spending eight seasons as an assisant coach with Philadelphia.

Guys,

Big Giant fan here…the year Fassel took us to the Super Bowl…we were and AVERAGE team at best…if you recall, we were 5-5 and then he GUARANTEED we would make the playoffs….then we went on to Super Bowl. The guy has like a 56-53 record with three trips to the playoffs and was Coach of the Year. Plus, without going into long of a story, I actually had personal contact with the guy and he is a class act. If you cannot get Cowher or Parcells-Fassel is a no brainer. I do not know how you could possibly consider another unproven coordinator after the Linehan debacle…

PS-Haslett is a nice guy but there is no possible way you can bring back a guy who lost his last 10 games….

Haslett needs to be the coach next year. I want the guy who has been through the last few years and still wants to be here, The Rams don’t need a savior. The Rams need a guy who knows what the problems are and has a plan on how to fix them. There is no quick fix for years of having no player development folks. These drafted players that come here and fail to produce then go to other teams and become good players should show you what the failures are here in St. Louis. Pick Haslett, invest in player development, and grow the program into the monster it can be. Oh, and ignore the local media, there is not one local sports guy that could lead rats off a sinking ship much less make a logical argument about football.

If we followed what everybody said we would try to hire every body and then wouldn’t hire any body. Some people are still suggesting that we hire Cowher and Schottenheimer even though they have stated that they won’t coach in 2009.

Some are saying don’t hire Haslett because he lost 10 games. Others are thinking like I am thinking; i.e., he knows the personnel and the organization and knows what needs to be done to improve this team. True his defense wasn’t good, but he didn’t have free rein to do everything he wanted.

Then there are those who say hire Spagnuolo right now and others who say don’t hire him. I’m thinking he might be a good hire and maybe a sought after hire. Bernie Miklasz said on his show that Giants DC’s have gone on to be good head coaches. Also Spagnuolo is from the same part of the country as Devaney and is a friend of his. Might be a good fit.

Some say Leslie Frazier might be as successful as Mike Tomlin. Others say Tomlin came into Pittsburgh with a good OC and DC in place. Frazier wouldn’t have that here; so they don’t think he will be like Mike Tomlin with us. Still, he seems like a pretty good choice.

Not a lot has been said about Rex Ryan in this thread, but if Baltimore wins again, we might have to wait too long for him. It sounded as if the Jets had a lot of interest in him.
