St. Louis Rams “mystery” candidate: Jason Garrett; finalists set

Jason Garrett, the assistant head coach-offensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys, is the so-called “mystery” candidate in the Rams’ head-coaching search, league sources told the Post-Dispatch on Monday. Barring an unexpected complication, Garrett will interview Wednesday in Los Angeles as one of the Ram’s finalist interviews.

According to league sources, the Rams have settled in on five finalists: current Rams coach Jim Haslett already has taken part in his finalist interview last week in L.A.; Minnesota assistant head coach-defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier is scheduled to interview there Tuesday; and it has now been confirmed that Steve Spagnuolo of the New York Giants will interview in Los Angeles on Thursday. (The Giants have granted St. Louis permission to speak to Spagnulo.)

The fifth finalist is Baltimore assistant head coach-defensive coordinator Rex Ryan. The only reason why Ryan was interviewed in Baltimore Sunday instead of in Los Angeles is because the Ravens are still alive in the NFL playoffs. Whether the Rams can afford to wait on Ryan, particularly if the Ravens win Sunday, remains to be seen.

I agree 100% with Cyclone Ram. Frazier or Spags.

My money for the best mix for this football team still remains Haslett HC and Martz OC. They have both been on the top and bottom of this football world and its not hard to figure out which one they liked best. They are both hungry to prove that with the chance again can get back to the top. cordinators with no HC experience havn’nt we as Ram fans been there enough.

I agree, please not Garrett. I’m hoping that Frazier get the call. Would like to have a Dungy like coach. If not him Spags. Lets make the move though!!

Just because they are a stud DC or OC doesn’t necessary translate to a great head coach. It’s the person who can reinvent himself on the fly and admit somethings not working and having the courage to change. Haz is the man and he has the best plan He is reinvented himself from his NO days and having the guts to change himself. Those of you who refer to his track record in NO and say that is him today are wrong. He has very much changed and gone smarter. Just give him this time his full due of what he creates now with Billy Devanney and HIS assistants and not what he inherited of not his own choosing.

And those of you who are clamoring for new blood, it’s a crap shoot but again it is the experience of knowing when your wrong and changing yourself for the better.

Let’s get this done and get Haz’s plan with his coaching staff in place today.

I dont completely agree with everyone on Jason Garrett. I see what your saying on not getting repect but from who T.O. who has he EVER respected i mean seriously and Romo was just talking out cause it looks like T.O. has rubbed off on him. Everyone there loved Garrett but when a player like T.O. starts acting out a guy like Jerry Jones who all but made Garrett the coach over the last 2 years as always dumps a coach over a player. So i dunno im torn but i would defiantly prefer Rex Ryan but how long can we keep waiting on Ryan we need to move before all good cordinators are gone. so i think Spagnulo is the guy we need although i would like to see a D minded HC but with timing Spags it is either guy is good ….Sorry long post

OOOHHHH NNNNOOOO please Devaney, you are losing credibility. Garrett’s players dissed him and Haslett just lost 10 straight. My order for next head coach Frazier, Spag, and maybe Ryan but honestly Frazier and Spag should be the only 2 finalists. Get it together Devaney before you are gone to.

According to espn, Ryan has emerged as leading canidate for jets job, so Devaney get it in gear before they are all gone and we are stuck with Haslett which is probably what you want anyway. Go hire Frazier or Spags, so they can get there staff together.

They missed the bus on this one… I definitely like Leslie Frezier, Rex Ryan, but they should have at least taken a look at Jerry Gray.

Maybe we shouldn’t dismiss Garrett so quickly. Dallas is a nut-house, beginning at the top with Jerry Jones, who thinks that building a team means signing all-pro’s. TO and Roy Williams are two of the great NFL team killers. And then you add Pacman Jones? And ask Wade Phillips, who is not what you’d call a dominating personality, to make them into a team? Garrett was handed this nut-house of players, without real power to do anything about it. He’s a smart guy, who was on two Super Bowl winning teams, and helped return the Dallas offense to potency. Maybe NOT being considered by Jones to be head coach, and wanting to leave Dallas, are positives. We’ll see.

please….please….can we just once try another coach with previous head coaching experience?!?! I cannot have another Linehan…Jim Fassel has a winning record…three playoff trips….Coach of the Year one year and took an average team to the super bowl…plus he is motivated as heck!!! Plus he apparently had a great first round interview….Bellichick, Coughlin, Dungy, all these guys won on second go round…please HIRE FASSEL!!!!
