St. Louis Rams “mystery” candidate: Jason Garrett; finalists set
Jason Garrett, the assistant head coach-offensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys, is the so-called “mystery” candidate in the Rams’ head-coaching search, league sources told the Post-Dispatch on Monday. Barring an unexpected complication, Garrett will interview Wednesday in Los Angeles as one of the Ram’s finalist interviews.
According to league sources, the Rams have settled in on five finalists: current Rams coach Jim Haslett already has taken part in his finalist interview last week in L.A.; Minnesota assistant head coach-defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier is scheduled to interview there Tuesday; and it has now been confirmed that Steve Spagnuolo of the New York Giants will interview in Los Angeles on Thursday. (The Giants have granted St. Louis permission to speak to Spagnulo.)
The fifth finalist is Baltimore assistant head coach-defensive coordinator Rex Ryan. The only reason why Ryan was interviewed in Baltimore Sunday instead of in Los Angeles is because the Ravens are still alive in the NFL playoffs. Whether the Rams can afford to wait on Ryan, particularly if the Ravens win Sunday, remains to be seen.

How about Tony Dungy who just resigned from the Colts?
You can forget about Haslett & Martz. Rule number 1, don’t show up the boss, even though you aren’t officially hired. The Rams do not want to be involved with another Martz tantrum & power struggle. Martz and Al Saunders run the same type of offense. Saunders features the run, then pass & Martz features the pass and maybe a run or two. Martz has no clue on any positions other than QB. He has picked some strange characters for that position. Martz knows nothing about OL men & TE’s, & WR’s or FB’s. And those are the most important positions on offense other than QB’s.
Tony Dungy has stated he is done with football, period. No return engagement, no high profile courting, he is finished. No reason not to believe the man.
And on the HC front, its got to be Frazier or Spags. Nothing else will suffice.
I’d like to see Haslett get a chance to make the changes to the organization. He’s already won over the team which is HUGE! Now let him bring in his own OC and DC.
I would give Haz a serious shot. If Ryan is so “HOT” how come the ravens passed on him ? I’m not sold on any of the coordinators to where they are better than Haslett. But then again, the Rams have gotten worse since Martz left and he won with questionalble talent and “kooky” front office.
Garret is over-rated. If he couldn’t do better than what he did in Big D with THAT talent, then he hasn’t impressed me(or anyone else).
Haslett on the other hand, inherited a bunch of Linahan Losers with a “losing is OK” mindset. Does anyone REALLY think that Tom Coughlin, Andy Reid, Ken Whisenhunt or even Mr.dry personality himself, Bill Belichick would’ve done a better job the last 13 games with this pathetic bunch.
Lots of changes need to be made in player personal. I’m hoping/trusting that at least for now, Devaeny pulls the right strings. Or this franchise is in the biggest trouble since moving to St. Louis.
The Rams can have Garrett. He is the most over rated O.C. in the league.
Of these, I think I would go with Rex Ryan. Bring in Martz to coordinate the offense and let it fly! I think Ryan would bring a no-nonsense approach to the team and get rid of the coasters that are deflating morale.
In Haslett’s defense, I would be alright if the team stuck with him on the insistence that his changes show merit next year. He’s had a while to deal with this mess and inherited the problems left behind by the previous coach. If he has the hammer, I think he could lead better than he could’ve as a lame duck like he was last season…
But overall, if Ryan wants the job, I’d give it to him.
I am in favor for Coach Ryan, I love his youth, energy, and he is a proven defensive coordinator with one of the BEST defenses in the NFL. With that being said what matters the most is bringing in, drafting quality players who can get the job done!!!.
You can raise from the dead the great Tom Landry, or Hank Stram but if you don’t have quality football players to execute your game plan, whats the sense……………………..
Long live Kurt Warner………………….not bad for a 37 year old quaterback………………eh??
Go Cards………
I’m a Cowboys fan and you guys shouldn’t be that down if you get Garrett. The problem with him on offense was the fact that he had to keep TO happy… that would make the best OCs in the league sweat. Don’t forget, just a couple years ago everyone was anointing him as the hottest young coach in the league. Also it should be known that he would more than likely bring Dom Capers in as DC, which would be a tremendous get for the Rams D. Back when there was a possibility that Garrett would become the HC for the Ravens/Falcons Capers was the guy that he had committed to him. Another thing, why would we get rid of Phillips? You guys need a little less ESPN in your life. Phillips finally has our defense playing aggressive football and we lead the league in sacks this past season. It would be premature for the Cowboys to let Phillips go after two seasons just because ESPN labeled him a “cupcake” coach. The reason why Cowboys fans aren’t worried about losing Garrett is because we have Ray Sherman who would step up and take care of our offense. Anyway I just wanted to shed some light to you fans that are down on the idea, and to give you a Cowboys fan’s point of view.
