Jason Garrett, the assistant head coach-offensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys, is the so-called “mystery” candidate in the Rams’ head-coaching search, league sources told the Post-Dispatch on Monday. Barring an unexpected complication, Garrett will interview Wednesday in Los Angeles as one of the Ram’s finalist interviews.

According to league sources, the Rams have settled in on five finalists: current Rams coach Jim Haslett already has taken part in his finalist interview last week in L.A.; Minnesota assistant head coach-defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier is scheduled to interview there Tuesday; and it has now been confirmed that Steve Spagnuolo of the New York Giants will interview in Los Angeles on Thursday. (The Giants have granted St. Louis permission to speak to Spagnulo.)

The fifth finalist is Baltimore assistant head coach-defensive coordinator Rex Ryan. The only reason why Ryan was interviewed in Baltimore Sunday instead of in Los Angeles is because the Ravens are still alive in the NFL playoffs. Whether the Rams can afford to wait on Ryan, particularly if the Ravens win Sunday, remains to be seen.

A view from the east coast. Spagnuolo is a better choice than Ryan. Given the fact that both the Giants and Ravens have drafted a helluva lot better on defense than the Rams in the past five years, I’d give the edge to Spagnuolo for doing more with less talent. Although both are top tier, the Ravens have two Hall of Famers in Lewis (as much as most hate his guts and pertentious attitude) and Reed. If you add to that Suggs, who is far better than anyone who has played linebacker for the Rams in the past ten years (Yeah, we never should have let London Fletcher go but we did get the great Dexter Coakley didn’t we!!!!), you can see the Ravens have the edge. Yes, the Giants have had great D-line players Strahan is a Hall candidate as well but the linebacking has been weak and secondary notoriously slow. Spagnuolo has done more with mixing coverages, blitzes and QB pressure than Ryan. I think Spagnuolo is a leader in the Giants locker room where the Ravens its all about Lewis. As someone who sees the Giants weekly (hate the Pats after 01), I think he’s a better choice.

Now, let’s give Devaney and Spagnuolo two seasons to turn it around.

I live in Terrell Texas outside of Dallas. The Rams do not want Jason Garrett. He does not have what it takes to be a leader. We saw that here in Dallas this year, when the WR led by TO staged a revolt. The league has caught up to his game calling. Romo called him out in a post game press conference.

Jason Garrett was the coach in waiting for the Cowboys before this last year. Now hes not even mentioned as a possible head coach for the Cowboys if the spot becomes open (it will).

I like all the candidates except for Frazier. Remember what happened last time we hired an OC from Minnesota? Bottom line is if our players don’t wanna play it won’t matter who they hire.

Anyone but Frazier…defense was already very good when he got to Minnesota, and their defense still couldn’t stop the pass.

My order would be Haslett, Ryan, Spagnuolo, Garrett, Frazier. The type of coach the Rams need is one that will hire very good coordinators, and let them run the offense and defense on game day. Alot of the former coordinators that have become head coachs fail because they call plays. Let the head coach be a motivator, kick some butt, and get rid of the players that don’t want to play. I think out of all the “finalists”, Haslett would be the best guy for the job, followed by Rex Ryan. I, personally, can care less about how they ran a defense, or ran an offense, etc., but, what kind of football knowlege they have, what type of personality they have, and what kind of work ethic they have. The X and Os should come from the coordinators that the head coach hires.

How about Steve Mariucci. He did great with the niners. Nobody could do well in Detroit. Player like mariucci and they play hard for him.

My 1st choice is Ryan, followed by Frazier & Spag. Haslett would be OK I gues, but not Garret. Absolutely not Garrett.

i think they should hire bernie miklaz. he seems to have the answers for everything.let him do what he wants and when he fails then ship him out of st. louis forever. maybe the national enquirer has a opening for a self-centered, self-absorbed, pompus sob.

I’ll take Fassel. He has experince and a innovative offensive scheme. Hell need a good D cordinator. If he had a good 1st interview bring him back for a second. No Hasslet!

If Martz is such a great OC why did SF let him go?
