St. Louis Rams “mystery” candidate: Jason Garrett; finalists set
Jason Garrett, the assistant head coach-offensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys, is the so-called “mystery” candidate in the Rams’ head-coaching search, league sources told the Post-Dispatch on Monday. Barring an unexpected complication, Garrett will interview Wednesday in Los Angeles as one of the Ram’s finalist interviews.
According to league sources, the Rams have settled in on five finalists: current Rams coach Jim Haslett already has taken part in his finalist interview last week in L.A.; Minnesota assistant head coach-defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier is scheduled to interview there Tuesday; and it has now been confirmed that Steve Spagnuolo of the New York Giants will interview in Los Angeles on Thursday. (The Giants have granted St. Louis permission to speak to Spagnulo.)
The fifth finalist is Baltimore assistant head coach-defensive coordinator Rex Ryan. The only reason why Ryan was interviewed in Baltimore Sunday instead of in Los Angeles is because the Ravens are still alive in the NFL playoffs. Whether the Rams can afford to wait on Ryan, particularly if the Ravens win Sunday, remains to be seen.

Puhleeze, not another offensive coach! Also, I disagree, LaRamz, the Rams went downhill after Martz became HC. Right now he’s not doing so hot as an OC either. His ego would be in the line of T.O. a distraction to TEAM! Rex Ryan, I don’t know too much about but Spags was in charge of last years winning defense, Super Bowl experience besides! This team needs a major shakeup. Find someone who will!!
Isn’t Ryan out of the mix? He’s supposed to be close to agreement with the Jets.
Shanahan, shanahan come on rams go out and get a really coach…one that know how to win
I have been the biggest Rams fan of them all going back to the Super Bowl we lost back in 1979 to the Steelers. First of all none of these coaches are going to stop the run, defend passes, block for the now (gun-shy) Bulger and cover kicks. The Rams are turning into the Lions and it scares me. It started when they let Ike go, why let him go? Oh yeah cause we signed ex-Bruin QB Drew Bennett, yeah you heard me, DREW BENNETT!!!! Tory Holt is aging but still better that Moss and T.O. Before we sign any kind of coach we need to shore up a lot of needs, maybe start by trading the #2 pick down for 2-3 more pics? Our secondary is laughable, except for O.J. Craft played like a young gun, maybe he’ll keep it up. Until Devaney address’ the roster any coach they sign will be set up for failure, we are in for another long season.
BRING BACK THE HAZ!! I LOVE HIM
Bring back Haslett!! The only other legit candidate is Spag. Rex Ryan is a crazy guy!!!!!!! Trust me i live in Baltimore
If the Rams want Ryan they better hurry up. ESPN is reporting that he is the front runner for the Jets job.
These are quality choices but why just these guys? What about Kyle Whittingham of Utah, Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Johnson or others? This is the off season, use it. There’s no need to rush although it makes sense to have someone by the time the draft rolls around.
I agree with Alec. We need better players with a better attitude. The last 5 drafts have been terrible. Hopefully now that Devaney is familiar with the talent (or lack of) he will make a few smart moves in free agency and have a quality draft. I’m in favor of bringing Haslett back. The team played hard for him the last few games, he knows who needs to go. He has the respect of the team. How long will it take for any new coach to develop that kind of respect. Haslett also understands that the organization needs an attitude change. No coach is going to come in and turn the team into a 10 win team overnight. Give Haslett a chance!!!!!
The Rams aren’t going to be able to please all of the people with their HC choice. That’s quite evident. The majority don’t want Haslett back, but some do, myself included. Those that don’t say he lost 10 games and his defense wasn’t any good. Those that do want him back, like myself, say he took over in the middle of the year with someone else’s coaches and plays and players and a terrible team. That’s asking a lot. Besides, even though the last severall games were losses, they weren’t blow outs. At least they were interesting games, and that shows improvement. He is familiar with the players, and they like him; he is also familiar with the orgnaization. He has a definite plan for improvement, and it makes sense. He has a proven track record as an NFL coach, and except for the Katrina year with NO and this impossible year with the Rams, he has been successful. The other four finalists are coordinators, and we are taking a chance with them. They might be highly successful like three new HC’s in 2008, or they might be like Scott Linehan. After the Linehan debacle, I think it would be better to go with someone with a proven track record– someone who can win with his own team unless there is a hurricane.
Some writers have used some of the same arguments for Jim Fassell. I agree with what they have said, but Fassell is not one of the 5 finalists for the Rams HC job. Some people have brought up names that never were under consideration. Again, they are not finalists for the job.
Regarding Rex Ryan, I have a couple ideas that some other writers have mentioned. (1) It seems that he is the Jets favorite. (2) If Baltimore wins, it might get too late for us to wait for him. Besides Baltimore has great defensive players. So Ryan can’t get all the credit for the great defense at Baltimore.
Some people think Leslie Fazier would be just like Mike Tomlin. Others say when Tomlin came to Pittsburgh, he came there with a good defense in place. In another thread, someone said the OC and DC wer already in place at Pittsburgh for Tomlin. None of this would be the case for Frazier coming to the Rams. So his situation would be different from Tomlin’s.
Writers complained about Garrett due to the problems Dallas had this year and comments made by Romo and T.O. However, a Dallas fan wrote that he thought we were giving Garrett a bad wrap because he had to deal with the egos of T.O. and Jerry Jones, and then tony Romo probably chimed in to support T.O. This could be. It seems to me that people are really quick to jump on a negative band wagon, and quite a few of the writers have done this regarding Garrett. I believe Billy Devaney knows what he is doing in selecting Garrett as a candidate.
Quite a few people like Spagnuolo, myself included. If an assistant is hired, I think he is the best. On the Bernie Miklasz Show it was mentioned that Giants DC’s have a history of becoming successful HC’s. Also Spags is a friend of Devaney’s and is a fellow Jersey Boy. So he might be a good fit for the Rams job.
My choices would be Haslett then Spags. But really I think any of the five would be fine.
