Although there has been no official announcement or confirmation, the Rams are set to hire former Mississippi State head coach Sylvester Croom to their staff, according to league sources. It is believed that Croom, 54, would coach running backs in St. Louis.

Prior to his five-year tenure as head coach at Mississippi State, Croom spent 17 seasons coaching in the NFL. Thirteen of those 17 seasons were as running backs coach with Tampa Bay, Indianapolis, San Diego, and Green Bay. The other four seasons were spent as offensive coordinator for Bobby Ross and the Detroit Lions, from 1997-2000.

Croom was the first African-American head football coach in the Southeastern Conference, but resigned at the end of Mississippi State’s 2008 season.

The Rams also are hiring Rock Gullickson as strength and conditioning coach, and Matt House to an undetermined position, according to league sources. Gullickson, 53, was strength coach for Green Bay the past three seasons and had the same position with the New Orleans Saints from 2000-05. House, 30, was a special teams assistant as well as assistant strength and conditioning coach for Carolina last season _ his first year in the NFL.

easy girls, Croom is a great RB coach, look at Tampa while he was there and after he left, NOT the same production, so Steven J finally has a coach that can teach him how to run and stay healthy, so great job Billy and Spags, your bringing in quality teachers of the football art, the reversal won’t happen over night but it will happen with these coach’s, and I agree, everyone cares about whether their team wins or looses and the quality of the coachs or we wouldn’t be doing what we do on this web sight for the “GREATEST TEAM EVER TO PLAY,,,,, PRO,,,,FOOOOOOTBAAAAAALL!!!!!!
GO BLUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All good hires for the Rams. I think we might actually focus on running the ball 25-30 times a game which is nice. Croom is a great hire he did spend 17 seasons coaching in the NFL. Far as I know you dont do that if you suck. Also some coaches in the NFL do not make good college coaches so just because he had a bad college coahing career shows nothing about his coaching abilities. He is a great character man with proven NFL experience. Anything is better than what was here the past 3 years.

Funny how most of the negative comments about our new coaches have been from disgruntled fans of the teams they came from, Mississippi State, Chiefs, Vikings. Can’t you guys keep your negative venom on your own boards? What - is it no fun any more because you can’t think up any more negative stuff to say about your team or coaches on your own boards so you’ve got time to follow coaches you hate to other teams boards and tell us how bad they are? You don’t have anything better to do with your lives than that? Tells me all I need to know about you characters. When we want your opinions will ask. Go back where you came from and continue to be miserable. We believe we’ve got a good thing going here and certainly don’t need your “expertise.” Thanks anyway.

I wouldn’t expect the return of “the greatest show on turf” anytime soon.

Good luck with Coach Croom. I think he will be back in his element as an assistant. Good man, poor head coach.

Hey redstorm, I’ve been on the post dispatch boards for over 3 years now so I’m not some troll looking to hate on Croom, I just happen to be a MSU fan as well as a Rams fan and he was horrible at MSU. I’m not saying he’s bad as a NFL running back coach but anybody on here saying he did good during his tenure at State are on acid.

Did things there nobody thought he could? What did he do? Lose to Division II schools and win 3 games a year? He had one good year when they won the Liberty bowl and that was it. Jackie Sherril took the team to SEC Title game and almost beat an undefeated Tennessee team that won the nation title that year so it’s not lie the Liberty Bowl was new high.
