St. Louis Rams release QB Green and WR Bennett
The Rams will have a new backup quarterback in 2009. The team released Trent Green, who was one year into his second tour of duty with the team on Wednesday in a move that saves the team $1.3 million of salary cap space.
A local favorite, Green, 38, attended Vianney High and grew up in suburban Oakville. He played in three games for the Rams last season, including a start against Buffalo on Sept. 28 after then head coach Scott Linehan had benched Marc Bulger.
But any chance Green had of continuing as starting quarterback was gone after that game, a 31-14 loss in which Green completed 17 of 32 passes but threw a costly interception. Linehan was fired after that game, and interim head coach Jim Haslett immediately re-instated Bulger as the starter.
The departure of Green, a two-time Pro Bowler who was with the Rams previously in 1999 and 2000, means the Rams will have a new No. 2 quarterback in 2009. One possibility is Tampa Bay free agent Jeff Garcia, who played for Rams offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur in Philadelphia in 2006.
The team also released wide receiver Drew Bennett, who had been a major disappointment since signing a $30 million free-agent contract two years ago. Bennett’s relieve is a wash, saving the team only $50,000 in cap space.

I know that cutting Bennett didn’t save us much but I am glad we cut him.
Drew Blewit was a waste of space and time
Glad to see that Bennett is gone for good. What a wast he was. I like what I am seeing out of our new leadership
Good move cutting both guys. Sorry we didn’t have Green during his prime. Funny how his NFL destiny just wasn’t meant to be in STL. Cutting Bennett surprised me. Geez, what a FA bust. I was under the impression that releasing him would be damaging to the Rams salary cap and not an actual savings….much less a wash. Can you explain that JT?
there is a god- i agree with brian white- could’ve fooled me - never saw bennett on the field, what a waste. great job devaney and co. step 1 finished, now its time to cut holt and pace, draft well and the rams will officially be off to a good start.
Good. That clears the way for Bulger (Mr. No Personality)
to be the back-up next season. That way, he can wear his
precious ballcap all the time.
who ever said they like trent green? are you sure you don’t mean kurt warner is the fan favorite? nobody, i repeat nobody, who knows anything about football liked trent green: overpaid, too old, not productive. i have to remember that hear in stl many people do not know much about football, i am one of the few. furthermore, drew bennett was worthless and getting rid of him doesn’t save much now, but saves money each year from here out AND most importantly it gives an opportunity for the rams to have a young crop of developmental receivers benefit… ever think of that before you published your “only $50,000″. fools, amongst me only fools…
Unlost,
the answer to your question is an easy one: our St. Louis Baseball Cardinals have, by far, hands down, the worst management. Just look @ how the 2nd base position was handled this offseason. Don’t mind tryin’ skip there, but the decision on what to do w/2nd was clearly botched. If they were to cut Kennedy last year, surely Lopez or Miles woulda been retained. My money woulda been on Lopez, considering how Cards management never likened Miles to a starter. The Blues clearly have the best management group.
But back to football, regardless of what anyone thinks, this Rams management group clearly has an idea of where to go & what to do. They’ve made all the right calls, so far, IMO.
Trent got almost zero reps in the preseason. He came into this season with a little rust. I think with back to back starts he would have gotten into a groove. By the way, anyone who calls Trent second rate must not have watched Trent with the Chiefs. (Don’t count the post-concussion playoff game where Herm Edwards obviously should have stuck with Huard)
PS I’m not from South County or have any ties to Vianney, so don’t play the Griffin card!
