St.Louis Rams cut safety Corey Chavous
The Rams began their roster-shaping and their salary cap drive Friday, releasing veteran strong safety Corey Chavous. Chavous, 33, came to St. Louis as a free agent with the arrival of coach Scott Linehan in 2006. He was a three-year starter, a defensive team captain last year, and one of the most respected players in the locker room.
But his lack of speed became more of a liability on defense during his tenure with the Rams, and he lost his starting job to Todd Johnson late in the 2008 season. It became apparent as the season wound down, even before Steve Spagnuolo was hired, that Chavous didn’t fit into the Rams plans for 2009 and beyond.
Earlier in the week, Chavous’ agent requested that the Rams release him as soon as possible, thus giving Chavous more time to look for another job before the start of the free agency and trading period. Releasing Chavous saves the Rams $1.2 million in cap space.

Keep the ax a choppin… Who is next????
It Has Begun…..Watch out Drew, hope ur next!!!!
I just got my Invoice in the mail for this years season tickets. I got the shakes thinkin about what a waste that was last year, the more I hear about these cuts the better I feel. We need a substancial overhaul. Please keep it going Bill and Steve!!!!
Gee- what a loss. I never understood how that guy kept his job as long as he did. Yeah, he’s a leader in the locker room, but how does it effect the young guys to see him get torched on every play?
Lawarence the only thing I can think is that they were hoping some of his leadership and passion would rub off on some of the younger players so that they could cut him faster, but alas that didn’t happen and he got cut anyway. I think Spag’s is going to be looking for a big hitter this off-season to make teams fear going deep on the Rams.
I hope ur right Rizzo. We haven’t had a Thumper since Toby Wright was back there
Hilarious! Is that the only photo the Post could find of Chavous — a guy running AWAY from him?
Could someone call Drew Bennett to the coaches office and tell him to bring his playbook!…. Keep the cuts coming!
From what I heard Drew can’t be cut because it would cost more to release him than to keep him…
How fitting, Chavous flailing with his meak arm tackles. Please coach, get some guys that know the fundamentals of arm tackling
If it makes sense financially, the Rams need to release or trade Pisa ASAP. I’m still amazed Holt hasn’t been shown the door. He had many great years, but his mouth runs faster than his legs do these days! Bye-bye Torry!
COME ON BABY… LET’S CUT THEM SO WE CAN KEEP HOLT AND PACE!!!!!! CLEAN THE DAMN HOUSE OUT!!
agree with keep “chop’n the deadwood” comment! there are flat out too many that need greener pastures. would like to see the Rams make a pitch for the Arizona Cardinal FA WR Boldin as well as picking up Crabtree and Maclin…Avery is not the answer! in my estimation he is not durable and too small!
Chavous was already washed up when he arrived.
Surely Drew Bennetts cap hit is too big to cut him though?

Yes, Thank Goodness; the man was Haslett’s pet project that kept a playing and kept getting burned (but he was a leader)….. couldn’t figure that one out !!
Payback for constantly watching one armed girly tackles are a ITCH ! Just rewards, keep it up - time to clean our house.
Next up…………………. Drum Roll…………… a.k.a,
Sideline Sally,Cement Hands, where’s the Glue ? Drew Bennett !!
Half the team needs to go bye bye. The other half is just plain pathetic. They should cut Hill, Green, Glover, Klop, Incognito, Leckey, Bell, Barron, Looker, & Pisa. If they can renegotiate Holt’s contract, fine. If not, bye bye Torry. The Rams need Pace. He is the best OT, he and fellow G Setterstrom & C Romberg. Trent Green is way past his prime and was a total dog in 2008. Definitely not worth his contract. The Rams need to clear out 20 horrible players and anybody else who took the season off.
Good move- the guy couldn’t tackle, run or defend a pass. Hopefully, they won’t do something stupid like try to sign Dawkins,(another s-l-o-w safety, who can still stop the run though)Both those players are long past their prime, and cannot provide deep help on passing plays.
What has happened to Tye Hill? I thought this would be his break out season? I never seen a guy regress like he has ( maybe Alex Barron). Last season for him was like a bad dream! If he is kept on the team I hope he can turn things around…. Lastly, does anyone think that Chavous could make an NFL team’s roster?
this guy has no business playing on this level
see ya chavous
Nice!!!! When does football start again????
Finally some see’s that this guy is done. Diesel314 I agree we have’nt had a hitter in back there since Toby Wright’s short career.
I wonder if the team can re-work Drew Bennet’s contract because this is Highway robbery.

Glover needs to follow. I thought he was moved to linebacker the way he kept ending up 5 yards off the line of scrimmage on every play! Spags will build a defense we haven’t seen since Lovie was here. This is gonna be a fun off-season for a change. Thank you Bill Devaney, Chip Rosenbloom, Steve Spagnuolo!! Keep it coming!!
chavous was just past his prime. good player that had gotten old. he wasn’t a bum player, just an untimely pick up made by knucklheads. nice to get some cap space and nice to see the rams making changes…i now will look forward to once again renewing my tix!
I think Glover is already a free agent. Can anyone verify that?
Please …let the next one to go be Incogworthless! I’ll even pack his bags and call the cab.

I know alot of people want the rams to get rid of bennett im not a fan myself but getting rid of hims only going to thin the receiving corps and not save any cap room so i say we keep him. cut pace theres no point in keeping him at this point and probably my favorite player torry holt hes has to be next hopefully theyll just restructure his deal that would be the smart thing and then cut draft
Incognito was the Rams best offensive lineman last year and is a very good run blocker…I think the Rams need him more than most fan’s know. The Rams need to go to Philly and try to nab one of their first rounders for both Torry Holt and Orlando Pace…anyone that believes the Rams have a chance for the playoffs next year are crazy. The Rams need to get a good young player for those too and continue on rebuilding this team. Making this trade, the Rams could then take Crabtree and grab Alex Mack later in the first round.
Yeah, here’s hoping Drew’s next. Freaking… if Holt doesn’t retire as a Ram, I am boycotting the Rams, period.
Keep on choppin’ Get rid of Drew, no matter how much it cost. Its cost us enough to have that bum on this team.
Has anyone noticed that Drew Bennet looks like Ozzy Osbourne? His performance or lack there of has sure had me writing the diary of a madman.
The Rams beat me to it.
Would love to see Bulger go next! ! !
GET MIKE VICK OR CASSEL.. NO MORE BULGER! DRAFT CRABTREE PLEASE……
Yes, now we need a guy like Archuleta was back in the day.WE also need to say goodbye to Richie Incognito, Dane Looker, La’Roi Glover Gary Stills, and injury prone Dante’ Hall, Drew Bennett, and sorry to say but Orlando Pace too.
