St.Louis Rams cut safety Corey Chavous

The Rams began their roster-shaping and their salary cap drive Friday, releasing veteran strong safety Corey Chavous. Chavous, 33, came to St. Louis as a free agent with the arrival of coach Scott Linehan in 2006. He was a three-year starter, a defensive team captain last year, and one of the most respected players in the locker room.

But his lack of speed became more of a liability on defense during his tenure with the Rams, and he lost his starting job to Todd Johnson late in the 2008 season. It became apparent as the season wound down, even before Steve Spagnuolo was hired, that Chavous didn’t fit into the Rams plans for 2009 and beyond.

Earlier in the week, Chavous’ agent requested that the Rams release him as soon as possible, thus giving Chavous more time to look for another job before the start of the free agency and trading period. Releasing Chavous saves the Rams $1.2 million in cap space.

If it makes sense financially, the Rams need to release or trade Pisa ASAP. I’m still amazed Holt hasn’t been shown the door. He had many great years, but his mouth runs faster than his legs do these days! Bye-bye Torry!

agree with keep “chop’n the deadwood” comment! there are flat out too many that need greener pastures. would like to see the Rams make a pitch for the Arizona Cardinal FA WR Boldin as well as picking up Crabtree and Maclin…Avery is not the answer! in my estimation he is not durable and too small!

Chavous was already washed up when he arrived.

Surely Drew Bennetts cap hit is too big to cut him though?

Payback for constantly watching one armed girly tackles are a ITCH ! Just rewards, keep it up - time to clean our house.

Half the team needs to go bye bye. The other half is just plain pathetic. They should cut Hill, Green, Glover, Klop, Incognito, Leckey, Bell, Barron, Looker, & Pisa. If they can renegotiate Holt’s contract, fine. If not, bye bye Torry. The Rams need Pace. He is the best OT, he and fellow G Setterstrom & C Romberg. Trent Green is way past his prime and was a total dog in 2008. Definitely not worth his contract. The Rams need to clear out 20 horrible players and anybody else who took the season off.

Good move- the guy couldn’t tackle, run or defend a pass. Hopefully, they won’t do something stupid like try to sign Dawkins,(another s-l-o-w safety, who can still stop the run though)Both those players are long past their prime, and cannot provide deep help on passing plays.

What has happened to Tye Hill? I thought this would be his break out season? I never seen a guy regress like he has ( maybe Alex Barron). Last season for him was like a bad dream! If he is kept on the team I hope he can turn things around…. Lastly, does anyone think that Chavous could make an NFL team’s roster?
