C Nick Leckey leaves St. Louis Rams for New Orleans

The Rams lost their second center to free agency in a week Tuesday when Nick Leckey signed a free-agent deal with New Orleans.

Undersized but tenacious, Leckey always seemed to find a way either onto the field or even onto the final roster in 1 1/2 seasons with St. Louis. After starting two games in 2007 for the Rams, Leckey was something of a longshot to even make the roster in 2008.

But a hand injury suffered by Brett Romberg during training camp opened the door for Leckey. He started the first 10 games of ‘08, before suffering a season-ending foot injury. After Leckey went on IR, Romberg started the final six games of last season.

Romberg signed a free-agent deal with Atlanta last week, leaving the Rams with no clearcut backup behind Jason Brown at center for 2009.

Chalk another position up that needs to be filled via the draft.

The loss of Leckey and Romberg aren’t that big of a deal. Incognito or Setterstrom can play center if anything happens to Brown. It would be nice to resign Goldberg because of his versatility and add a tackle in round 1 or 2.

Leckey was terrible anyway- he shouldn’t even be in the NFL.

Lecket had no business ever being a starter in the NFL. That was a joke last year

Hate to say it but guys like Leckey are a dime a dozen in this league. The Rams are rightfully building with quality, not quantity like the last regime.

This is my first post in years, but I’m back! RAMpage39 makes alotta sense. Hopefully they draft an OT right after drafting Curry #1, then a wr #3, DT #4,ss#5. Although not thrilled with Bulger, a QB next year or draft someone to groom this year.

I was never a Leckey fan. The team had no punch up the middle in the running game and Leckey was part of the reason. The Rams released him for the same reasons the Cardinals did. He just is not a starter in the NFL. J. Brown is a real upgrade for the Rams. What they do now to fill the slot for a backup is anyone’s guess. Whoever it is it will be an improvement. I won’t be surprised to see Incognito at backup C & G if they get guard Robinson in the draft.

Reggie Bush and Drew Brees better double up on the padding this season cause they’re going to take a lot more hits right up the middle.
