St. Louis Rams receiver Torry Holt asks for his release

Realizing he no longer fits in the team’s plans, seven-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Torry Holt has asked for his release from the Rams, league sources told the Post-Dispatch on Wednesday.

The Rams have been shopping Holt, 32, on the trade market, but so far there have been no takers. Holt is due a $1.25 million roster bonus on March 17, so it’s unlikely he will be a Ram beyond then.

But with free-agent wide receivers being signed daily around the NFL, and hundreds of millions of dollars already spent six days into free agency, Holt is seeking some closure to his time in St. Louis.

It is a shame that this is what it has come to. A hall of fame receiver is on our team and we have found a way to allienate him and worse can’t make him fit into our team plans.

If torry really asked to be released I would make it simple for him. I would tell him we are not going to just release you, you need to find a trade or play out your contract with the team. I wish he would look at Marvin Harrison and just renegotiate his contract to like 5 Mill a yr

I would not release him outright. There is a team out there willing to give up draft pics.

Holt is definitely a key player of the glory days of the Rams’ offense. Understandably so that this is business in the NFL, Torry deserves to be somewhere that best fits his ability and the Rams fans all deserve to see a successful organization once again. Best of wishes to Torry, he will always be a Ram to me!

He was once a stud, one of the best of the last decade. Too bad he won’t restructure his deal, stay, and mentor, young guys, and retire a Ram. Loyalty cuts both ways in the NFL, and Torry is like most of the rest, I guess.

such is the nfl. holt was fantastic, would love to see him retire a ram, but bottom line is that really doesn’t happen anymore. teams and players do what’s best for them, and what’s best for rams is not paying $10M to an a receiver who they are not making the focal point. his trade value has now diminshed, hopefully, some team (indy?) will take a flyer on him as a #2 receiver and give a mid-round pick for him. personally, i cheer for the rams, not individuals, b/c, in general, they come and go and neither give nor receive loyalty. i’d rather lose him and have the $8M (i think) or so of cap room that losing him frees up. this is why contracts are backloaded, players rarely see the end of the deal. thanks for the memories, holt, you kicked a lot of butt for a long time, but as they say, some things must end so that others may begin…
