St. Louis Rams receiver Torry Holt asks for his release
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
Realizing he no longer fits in the team’s plans, seven-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Torry Holt has asked for his release from the Rams, league sources told the Post-Dispatch on Wednesday.
The Rams have been shopping Holt, 32, on the trade market, but so far there have been no takers. Holt is due a $1.25 million roster bonus on March 17, so it’s unlikely he will be a Ram beyond then.
But with free-agent wide receivers being signed daily around the NFL, and hundreds of millions of dollars already spent six days into free agency, Holt is seeking some closure to his time in St. Louis.

Cant blame him…he will be missed.
It is a shame that this is what it has come to. A hall of fame receiver is on our team and we have found a way to allienate him and worse can’t make him fit into our team plans.
If torry really asked to be released I would make it simple for him. I would tell him we are not going to just release you, you need to find a trade or play out your contract with the team. I wish he would look at Marvin Harrison and just renegotiate his contract to like 5 Mill a yr
hurry get him out of here too old too slow
I would not release him outright. There is a team out there willing to give up draft pics.
Thanks Mr Holt!
Holt is definitely a key player of the glory days of the Rams’ offense. Understandably so that this is business in the NFL, Torry deserves to be somewhere that best fits his ability and the Rams fans all deserve to see a successful organization once again. Best of wishes to Torry, he will always be a Ram to me!
Come on out here to beautiful San Fransisco, T-Holt! We’ve got a great coach, and it’s the NFC West……..We could be in the next Superbowl! Come on and get you some! We’ll tear it up! Holla Nina’
He was once a stud, one of the best of the last decade. Too bad he won’t restructure his deal, stay, and mentor, young guys, and retire a Ram. Loyalty cuts both ways in the NFL, and Torry is like most of the rest, I guess.
such is the nfl. holt was fantastic, would love to see him retire a ram, but bottom line is that really doesn’t happen anymore. teams and players do what’s best for them, and what’s best for rams is not paying $10M to an a receiver who they are not making the focal point. his trade value has now diminshed, hopefully, some team (indy?) will take a flyer on him as a #2 receiver and give a mid-round pick for him. personally, i cheer for the rams, not individuals, b/c, in general, they come and go and neither give nor receive loyalty. i’d rather lose him and have the $8M (i think) or so of cap room that losing him frees up. this is why contracts are backloaded, players rarely see the end of the deal. thanks for the memories, holt, you kicked a lot of butt for a long time, but as they say, some things must end so that others may begin…
Do whatever he wants. He has earned it. He gave it all for the Rams every week. Now we can give him his freedom on his terms.
Has Holt slowed down? Of course he has, just like every player before him has. Too old? Heck no. Granted his YAC has disappeared but those hands and route running haven’t. There is a place for Torry on this team at a reduced salary, so I wouldn’t give up on him just yet. Ramerhead8696 comments shows you should change your name to Knucklehead8696. Holt was and is better as a ball player than you will be at anything you ever try in your life, except for showing your ignorance.
In retrospect - we held onto the wrong receiver.
shame
Don’t release Holt are you crazy?
he will be missed, but it’s time to let him go. he deserves to go play for a contender, he’s suffered long enough.
Why do St. Louis Rams and St. Louis Cardinal fans want to keep players on the downside of their careers? I believe in the Branch Rickey approach, trade them while they still have value. The most successful NFL team this decade is the NE Patriots. They don’t keep their older players.
Holt has slowed down-he is not a #1 receiver. Trade him before the draft.
end of a era my friends, end of a era.
Earnhardt Lives
We Did Nothing Wrong
Torry should talk to Arizona about a job….. Oh, darn. He bad mouthed the current Arizona Starting QB, Warner. This just another example of being careful what you wish for. He and others refused to play for Scott Linehan & Jim Haslett, so they got a new coach. Now there are several guys looking for work. How fitting? The FO might have ruined the GSOT, but the non performers ruined their own job status.
Spags wants to run the ball. Bulger can still hand off, maybe throw 5 yds for a 1st down,
This will hurt us badly…we do not have anyone to step in his place and can’t waste our first pick on a wr when we need either an OT or LB more.
Are you kidding BB? The Patriots don’t keep their older players? They are the showcase team for winning with older players. Oakland’s (at the time) O-coordinator said that Moss had (age-related) “declining skills” and look what he does as a Pat. Look at the average age of the Pats’ linebackers over the last few years. It can be done with the right coaching: take advantage of the older players’ sound technique and smarts and hide their weaknesses. Torry could still be highly productive for the Rams if the new staff were’t determined to have a youth movement.
Holt was one of the all-time great WRs for the Rams. But, his best years are likely behind him and the Rams are moving in a different direction. If he won’t restructure his deal and the Rams can’t find a trade, another team will likely pick him up for a portion of his current salary following his release. That’s just the business. He’s had a lot of success and been rewarded handsomely. Still may have some good games in him. However, it’s unlikely that he will have another 1500 yard season. I say “Good Luck, Torry…wish you well when you are not playing the Rams”. You were a joy to watch in blue and gold.
No problem trading him, he has more than player his part over the years but no way should we just release him. He has to have some value.
Let’s not denigrate a great receiver because he’s no longer in the Rams’ plans. Holt is a certain Hall of Famer (not first ballot) and he played hard every play. Hope you are treated elsewhere with the dignity you deserved here. Yea, it’s a business but they did the same with another Hall of Fame receiver, who also played hard every play (even every false snap).
How can you morons call Holt old and slow!? Since the rams STUPIDLY got rid of Ike, torry was double teamed EVERY DOWN because we had the rookie donnie avery on the other side. Donnie will be a stud in the future, but honestly, who can we get thats better than Holt since we’ve waited so long? This is a dumb move. Good thing we’re becoming a power running team because our passing game will surely suck!
Too bad. You can’t always get what you want, unless of course you give the rest of the salary remaining on your contract to the Rams.
Goodbye Torry, thanks for the memories!!!
He was never the same once Bruce got released.
Love to see him stay, but I get both sides of it. Thanks for the great years on and off the field, Torry!
I will always be a Torry fan. I met him in Hawaii and he was gracious and eagerly let me get a photo of us. As a Ram fan I would love to get a pick for him but if your going to release him anyway do it now.
I say try to trade holt and 4th round pick and try to pick up bouldin from the cardinals. try and keep pace. and for the #2 pick you cant pass up curry. he will dominate for years.in second round try and get the best OT out there. sign butler. if pat white or nate davis or josh freeman are still there take them in the 3rd round. GO RAMS!!!
Holt may be the best reciever to ever play in STL. He is still good, but he has been under utilized. I think he has always been underrated and I would take him on my team. For those of you who say he is washed up, you are a hater. The NFL needs more players like Hold, especially at the WR position. Winning is not even a priority for the rams and I am very frustrated with them.
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don’t leave us t-t-t-torry, you need to teach the youngsters how to played. you could have retired a ram, you still had gas left. please no
Warner gets accused of being a money grubber, but Holt gets a free pass?
I think the beginning of the end came last year when Torry stated he would like to be wih his brother. Add to that the complete screw ups who were running the team at that time. Torry Holt has been a superior player and person for the Rams, he will be missed but business is business. I would try and get a trade done. But now that everyone knows he wants out that will be almost impossible.
It will be a sad day not seeing #81 Holt in a Rams uniform.
bustedbtym we need every thing in this upcoming draft to zero in on one type of player is not good scouting that’s girl scouting… WE NEED THE BEST PLAYER IN THE DRAFT PERIOD
This relationship ending is best for both parties, however I am interested to see where he ends up. I would really like to see Holt blow up for another team as I think he still has it in him to be a top receiver.
It will be sad to see Holt go, be he has had an attitude problem the last couple of seasons. I point out laughing on the sidelines after losses. He’s had a good career, but I would not consider him a hall of famer just yet. He benefited highly from playing on the other side of Issac Bruce.
You CANNOT just let him walk…you HAVE to get something in return.
First of all, thank you Torry for your hardwork (except last year, but I understood). Everyone I’ve ever know personally or read about who has met Torry Holt had nothing but kind things to say about how he interacted with them. I truly believe he was a class act. Maybe a hiccup or two in his career here, but who doesn’t have those. The reason Torry has voiced his displeasure such as wanting to play with his brother and asking to be traded are for these reasons. First of all, when you see management make good moves, a la the glory days, then just free fall to the toilet boil it gets frustrating. Secondly, the chemistry he lost with Bruce not being on the field, stung. A talent like Bruce relieves the pressure and doubleteams off of Holt and vice-versa. Avery is not Bruce yet. Now he’s getting ready for his 4th head coach and that also must be hard for a seasoned veteran. So with 4 headcoaches in 8+ years that tells you something about how screwed up this franchise was. Seems as though now they’re making strides, but Holt may not fit in the new coaches scheme. That’s just football. If I’m the Rams, as a business move, I either get trade stock for him or I make sure he doesn’t get any extra money upon departing. Sorry that’s just the business side of it. I wish Torry all the best not only in football, but in life as well. God Bless, goodnight.
Torry refuses to redo his contract, he has said he wants out , he will be given his wish if they can’t work a trade. He isn’t as smart as he thinks he is , he will end up making less than if he restructured. Some people think the Rams are being disrespectful to Torry and Orlando , but they are the ones on the decline and won’t work with the Rams. I wish them well, let’s move on.
Holt was a product of MY system. I could have made anyone a star. He was just in the right place at the right time.
Ram today Seahawk tomorrow, Hawks need receivers and will be first in line to grab him. Rams should negoitate to get something, not outright release him.
Torry was never the same once Linehan was hired as HC. Things got worse after bruce was disrepected from the two old goons. That said, allow Holt to move on and begin the next chapter of his life.. He has earned it..
coleyrock
Thanks for the memories Torry. I don’t blame you for wanting to leave after last seasons fiasco. You were definately one of the Rams best receivers over the years. Good luck and god bless.
This begs the question, what now for Imo’s? Talk about your holes to fill.
Big Game Torry Holt is The Man. I am blessed as a Rams fan to see him play his prime in horns. Would love to see him get another good run at a ring, wherever he ends up. He is a Ram legend, and he deserves utmost Respect
Spoiled Brat!
Hey you got a Ring your rookie year. Now; I am supposed to feel your pain? Warm me up a pitchfork then I will cry crocidile tears for you.
Well it’s a shame for his time to possibly end like this. I’d rather him stay, have them work it out.
If they don’t, go call Denver and say Holt, Pace, Bulger for Cutler. See if Denver is crazy enough to bite since Cutler is totally annoyed with them.
Done. =)
Definitely a sad day
One of my all-time favorite Rams. Thanks for 10 great years Big Game.
Say hello to future Hall a Famer Michael Crabtree!!!!!!!
If the Rams release Torry, he will not go to Seattle…the Seahawks already have three high priced wide receivers. I could see Torry ending up in Philly, Tampa, Baltimore, or Minnesota. I think anyone of those teams would be willing to give up a 2nd day pick to make sure they get him.
He has lost a step and is no longer an elite receiver. Bruce was far better that him… they should of kept Bruce last year and shopped Holt. Now they will probably get nothing for him.
“league sources” quote AGAIN!
Is this a quote by a National Football LEAGUE source? Or just a represenative secretary that may represent a player? League source MEANS League! Hence National Football LEAGUE!
HOLT HAS GREAT HANDSBUT HAS LOST THE MOXY TO GO DOWN THE MIDDLE. WHEN WAS CTHE LAST TIME HE BROKE A TACKLE?I MEAN REALLY HIGH SCHOOL CORNERS CAN TACKLE HIM. LOST HIS SPEED AND GUTS,REDUCED TO SIDELINE PASSES TO MINIMIZE CONTACT. SEE YA!
It amazes me that the rams would not want him in their plans. The team already has basically no wide receiver experience left. With all the good wr’s getting picked up in free agency the Rams appear…. screwed
parting is’nt sweet sorrow, vaya con dios mi amigo.
big game holt will be terribly missed. ive lived in the texas panhandle all my life and have been a rams fan just as long. ( cowboy hater) im also a die hard red raider fan and attend every game possible. i say trade holt and GET CRABTREE!!!! avery. crabtree. look out boldin, fitzgerald. its time for the next generation of bruce and holt. CRABTREE all the way
R.I.P 99′ Rams its a sad story
Tiredog ;
You are dead on! I don’t say that to many FYI.
Come to chicago, where you will compete with the like of earl bennett and rashied davis!!!!!!! We need you tori!
ILL BE THE FIRST TO SAY IT…GET T.O.
just released….he should be a ram!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It’s a damn shame we can’t have at least one of the guys start and finish their career here. I know it’s not healthy to hold on to the past, but I will always be a Holt fan! Thank you Mr. Holt!
never wanted to see this day… wish you coulda stayed a ram but ya gotta do whats best for you t holt. we love u here in st. louis man u gave us some great years and ur a first ballot hall of famer. thanks and good luck on the rest of ur career BIG GAME!
The other day some guy writes that the Rams should pick up Mike Vick. Now it’s TO?!?!? Who are these people??? Why are they allowed to roam the streets freely???
And to those on here who criticize Holt in any way… get a clue. Great player. Class act. An all-time Ram.
haha, t.holt is a class act, i can tell you xactly where i was when he was drafted.
t.o. has 0% chance of comin to stl, but it funny to see comments like that…
Now that T.O. is available, cut Torry and sign T.O. OK, maybe I just wrote this to stirr up conversation…lol…but a 1 year deal, with behavioral contract incentives…may be too much of a risk for a first year coach, but having T.O. and Stephen Jackson would drive Defenses Crazy…lol…
damn i wish he coulda played in our system just 1 more season and he will be missed whereever he goes but hopefully we get a good WR in the draft and release looker, and the rest or just pick up maclin to run back kicks
Holt is a first ballot Hall of Famer! But its time for the Rams to rebuild and they could use the * mill to do it
We’ll take you in KC Torry, you and D-Bowe would make a great duo for Cassel to throw to!
Still a great receiver. Can you say - Dallas?
i really wish we could keep Torry and he would retire a Ram…but the Rams need the Cap Space and he is obviously looking to go somewhere where he can contend for a championship…can’t blame him…last 3+ years have been awfull here…let’s just hope he will go into the Hall of Fame as a Ram when it’s his time. Honestly, I think he has at least 3 very good years in him…let’s be honest, is Crabtree gonna be as reliable as Torry Holt in his first 3 years as Holt will be in his next 3?…Holt is still one of the smartest receivers in the league and one of the best route runners…nobody runs the deep in like Torry and Ike…we will probably be watching Torry tear up the league on another team and wish we still had him…
Holt has been great for the Rams but I think this needs to be done from both sides.
great player sad to see him go
As a Giants fan, I’d take Holt right now for a 2nd rounder. Or I’d be happy to sign him once he’s released. Just the kind of player we could use to insure our Plax debacle, and maybe teach a young guy from the draft a thing or two during his tenure.
I think that we should release Torry Holt! No one should be forced to play for a team they don’t like! It’s not good for the team but we need players on the Rams that want to play for them!
I dont blame him but still stay holt new Qb thats what i say
