Sure looks like St. Louis Rams are shopping Pace, Holt

As the frantic first weekend of free agency winds down, all has been quiet with regards to Rams wide receiver Torry Holt and offensive tackle Orlando Pace.

General manager Billy Devaney indicated Friday that the Rams, in theory, had enough cap room to sign center Jason Brown, safety James Butler, and re-sign cornerback Ron Bartell without having to tap into the $14 million that would be created by releasing or trading Pace and Holt.

For now, Pace and Holt remain Rams, but league sources are convinced that the team is shopping both players as trade bait. Perhaps the thinking is that once the early buying spree calms down, there will be a market for Pace and Holt _ even if it’s a mid_ to late-round pick.

The club has been extremely tight-lipped on the futures of Holt and Pace. Then again, they’ve hardly said they fit into the team’s plans in 2009. At the NFL Scouting Combine, coach Steve Spagnuolo said only that the Rams would do what’s best for the team.

On Friday, Devaney said he didn’t know what would happen with Pace and Holt. Both are seven-time Pro Bowlers and veterans of two Super Bowls with the Rams.

Thanks Jim.

Has Spags even met Holt or Pace yet?

I hope we can get something for them. What’s the latest on Bartell?

I say….let’s keep them for another year…after all they are already under contract and if we don’t need the cap space let them play until next season…then do a look see…

we wasted an oppurtunity, we should have trade holt for lito sheppard. it would have been amazing, and trade pace for a dt or de n grab jason smith in the draft. or pace for a 2nd round pick n grab a wr, like the kid from maryland or the nicks kid from nc.

A wise NFL Maxim says that it is better to trade players 1 year too early then 1 year too late. Pace and Holt were all time greats. They both can still play - even at a high level in spurts - but its time to let go of the “name” players of the past and start looking towards the future.

If these guys were playing for the vet minimum, it wouldn’t be an issue. But they are being paid like top 10 players. Those days have passed. Time to do what is best for the team.

In my opinion, losing these two and freeing up as much cap as possible will be better for the entire team. Yes, it does create more holes by losing them, but it also opens up more money to fill them in - and then some. Holt doesn’t want to be in St. Louis, and Pace has been hurt frequently in recent years. Time to move on.
