Were St. Louis Rams close to hiring Rex Ryan?
DANA POINT, CALIF. _ Some who know Rex Ryan well believe that St. Louis was his first choice all along during the NFL’s offseason coaching carousel, not the New York Jets.
We’ll never know for sure. Nor will we ever know how serious the Rams were about Ryan before eventually hiring Steve Spagnuolo as their head coach. But the fact that Jets owner Woody Johnson took the time to travel to Baltimore to interview Ryan, helped convince Ryan that the Jets could be a good fit.
“I had a really nice interview with Billy Devaney,” Ryan said, in reference to the Rams’ general manager. “I thought it was a great interview. I felt very comfortable with Billy and Lawrence McCutcheon.”
McCutcheon, a Rams scouting executive, accompanied Devaney to Baltimore to interview Ryan, while Ryan was busy working as defensive coordinator during the Ravens’ playoff run.
“Those are the only two (Rams) that I met with,” Ryan said Tuesday at the AFC coaches’ breakfast. “So how serious they were, I never met with the owner or anything else. . . .But at the end of the day, the best job for me was the New York Jets.
“And I think it was because I was chosen by the owner. I felt that it wasn’t just the general manager choosing me. I felt Woody Johnson chose me as well, and that was important to me.”
Nonetheless, coaching the Rams would have been intriguing.
“It was tough because my brother (Jim) lives in St. Louis,” Ryan said. “I’m a Midwestern guy and all that. But at the end of the day, what was best for me and my family was that I felt the (Jets) owner believed in me. I think that was important.”
Even though Ryan didn’t end up coaching in St. Louis, but he took a St. Louis coach with him to New York by hiring Rams wide receivers coach Henry Ellard to the same position with the Jets. Ryan said he didn’t know Ellard before hiring him.
“I just knew of his reputation,” he said. “You build a reputation, and a lot of that is based on how your players play. What you see on tape. So that’s what excited me about Henry.”
Ravens running backs coach Wilbert Montgomery, who had worked with Ellard in St. Louis, strongly recommended Ellard to Ryan.
“He just had some great things to say about Henry,” Ryan said. “And when Henry came in (for his interview), he didn’t disappoint. Clearly he was an outstanding coach, and it’s going to be a huge thing for us to get Henry.”

I think the Rams got the better HC here. Ryan was an excellent DC because of his defensive knowledge. But a HC? I don’t think he has the skills outside of defense to control a whole team. We will see.
Both Spagnuolo and Ryan are great defensive coaches, and will be great head coaches.Who’s better? It’s a tough call, can’t go wrong with either one and both come from different coaching background regarding defensive philosophy.Spagnuolo has a slight edge,in my mind because of his defensive strategy helping the Giants win the Super Bowl over the undefeated Patriots.I’m just glad we got Spagnuolo.
Why even bring this up? Its a moot point. We have the best coach now and any negativity needs to be eliminated. Remember when Gary Pinkel took over for the Tigers, he didn’t allow any people around the team that didn’t totally support the team.
It makes no sense at all. Spagnuolo is the right coach for the Rams.
I was sad to see Henry Ellard go.
They got a proven guy no matter what. Going .500 is enough to excite me right now.
Who really cares about this story? We got Spags….. move on.
Agree with Ramsfan and Ike. Don’t write stories nobody cares about just for the sake of writing them.
I disagree, this is an important story. The 1st and most important hire the “new” group made was head coach. Did they settle for 2nd best? Were they outbid by NY? They say they want to rebuild this program into a respectable organization. Was this hire the best the could do?
I agree this is a Moot Point until I see more W and L then I will make my opinion on who got the better coach.
I hope it’s us, but everyone thought the Linehan was going to be great, and we all know how that ended up.
Haslett went out and won his first 2 games as our coach, and I can remember people saying that this is our next coach. We can’t let this guy go, Sign him to a contract.
Well we all know how the rest of season went after those two games.
I do beleive we will win more than 2 game this comming season, but like I said above.
I’ll wait and pass judgement after next season.
I do believe we got the better hire but we’ll see. To me Rex Ryan just inherited a defense that was already great, so in my opinion he has lots more to prove before I would call him a great hire.
