The Rams need help at the wide receiver position and got some Monday by trading for Atlanta wideout Laurent Robinson. The Rams acquired Robinson by switching draft positions with the Falcons in both the fifth and sixth rounds. They didn’t lose any picks; they just changed positions in both rounds with Atlanta.

The Rams get Atlanta’s fifth-round (No. 160 overall) and sixth-round (No. 196 overall) picks; Atlanta gets the Rams’ fifth-round (No. 138 overall) and sixth-round (No. 176 overall) picks.

Robinson was a third-round pick by the Falcons out of Illinois State in 2007. Rams general manager Billy Devaney was with the Falcons at that time and in the draft room when Robinson was selected.

Robinson started six games for the Falcons as a rookie, including the season opener. For the year, he appeared in 15 games with 37 catches for 437 yards. His only TD of the year was a 74-yard catch-and-run against Arizona in Game 15.

But Robinson was a Bobby Petrino draft pick, and fell out of favor with new head coach Mike Smith in 2008. Slowed by hamstring problems, Robinson appeared in just six games for the Falcons last season, catching five passes for 52 yards.

Robinson has good size at 6-2, 194 pounds, and is considered a speed guy with good hands. But the injury problems didn’t help his cause in Atlanta. Neither did the fact that he wasn’t considered physical enough by Smith’s staff, particularly as a blocker.

The Rams’ inherit his contract as a result of the trade, and Robinson comes cheaply. He has two years left on his contract and is scheduled to make $460,000 this season and $550,000 in 2010.

The Rams have made no promises about his role in St. Louis; he will simply compete for playing time.

Love this deal. Robinson had heaps of potential coming out of college and only little injuries at bad times have stopped him from moving up in Atlanta. He fits in well as a no. 3 for the time being and will push Burton to be no. 2 in camp. I still think there is a draft pick to come, but it may make that need less urgent. A Collie, P Turner, J, Knox, rather than a second or third rounder. This deal will allow spags to take a MLB and a D-Lineman to help him out.

They should still take a look at some free agent wide recievers, this guy has potential but so have a lot of people who never did anything. i like turner (USC) in the late rounds if he is still there but they need a tutor and i hope it is not Toomer that guy is washed just like kennison last year. Avery is best suited in the slot so his speed can be used correctly and based on last year he is easily injured. burton is still most likely a year away and Stanley is a #5 on most teams with enough potential to maybe be a #4 and spot #3 in times of injury. The rams have to address this pre draft or trade during the draft to attain a valuable vet or it is 1998 all over again i.e. small, proehl, hakim.

He was the starter ahead of Michael Jenkins, opposite Roddy White last year entering season for the Falcons. He was injured most of the season (with mostly hamstring issues), and Jenkins took over and had a good year. Devaney is familiar with his ability, and must like him, so if he stays injury-free he might be a heck of a pickup. He has great size and speed.

My only issue would be is his ability to go over the middle. I remember pre-draft a lot of people spoke of him as primarily a deep threat. Burton or a vet (DJ Hackett??) will be that guy but he may not be a great compliment to avery as a starter on the other side.

Yeah, the Rams should look at free agent WR’s in the draft, particularly this guy that some people might have heard of; he played his college ball at N.C. State, great guy, good smile, some say he’ll prolly retire as a top 5-10 wide receiver of all time. The only negative this about him is that he gave himself his own nickname (Big Game), which I believe you’re not supposed to do…

This is a good move by the Rams. They gave up nothing and could get a starter. Billy D. magic strikes again!

no complaints here. a good tall receiver is just what we need to get the wide out corps. in place. Im predicting another receiver in the draft around the fourth or fifth round

I like the acquisition. I’m glad somebody else,(rams19) has checked J. Knox! The story is; he’s a work in progress. But he logged the fastest 40 at the combine. SIGH…, I’ll concede that Maclin, will probably be snatched away, in the first round. So Knox could take up the return duties.

Avery gets blocked back by DB’s coming off the line, and he’s a little light, and a probable injury risk. But Avery can blaze, and is excellent yards after catch, if he keeps his confidence up. He needs a big attention grabbing WR on the other side. Burton is more well rounded than Avery, but is really just an excellent #4 guy. If Robinson isn’t very physical than he’s just a #3 wideout, 6′2 or not. Depending on what Avery turns out to be, we still need a #1 WR or #2 WR depending on Avery’s improvement. Do we take that position over OT, LB, or DT/DE, now? We need twice as many picks defense than offense, but we don’t move the ball without improved blocking: therefore we must go Offensive Tackle. Though I’d rather have the top linebacker.

signing a QB, then a WR, shows you that these positions are eliminated in the draft….Barron as a left tackle makes sense, seeing that this is “the” position he played in college, remember 2 yrs ago this guy filled in for Pace and did a good job ( 3 1/2 sacks in 15 games)…. Goldberg is still a fill in until we draft a right OT in the draft…..So that leaves our #2 for “CURRY” the MLB of the future and allows them to draft an OT with the second or 3rd pick, all the options change guys stop going for the okie doke and pay attention to what this team is doing, Devaney and Spags are making choices albeit the right choice or not but they are showing you what direction they are taking

Twenty names in two rounds is not what I would call giving up nothing. Maybe Billy knows something about this kid making it worth it. I also don’t think this is any kind of indicator of the draft by the Rams. This kid might just be a big maybe.
jrystm, you might have it right but I bet anything a wide receiver is picked in this draft by the Rams earlier than later.

I remember when Robert Thomas was supposed to be our LB of the future

I’m not sure what to make of this move. Never heard of the guy, but from the story it sounds like he’s injury prone and might not have made it with the Falcons. I was hoping we’d sign Plexaco Buress. I figured Spags probably knew him from NY. He’d be a big time weapon down field provided he doesn’t shoot himself again. I still hope maybe we grab him and give him a chance.

this guy could be our #2 and move avery to 1 until something else happens i would not be mad at that. i would like Plaxico more, but this kid can play good sign BD

Absolutely love this deal - mainly because I’m an ISU alum, but more importantly, I think he can help the Rams as the third receiver. He has speed, but he also has great hands. I know the story also said that, but I saw it in person several times.

I just cant understand this…, desperation. Why are some of you so quick to suggest picking up Plaxico Burress?

Too much DOWNSIDE! I just read, this morning - how he is now down in Florida - acting like an idiot. Cursing police out.

’speed’, you really have me sold on the idea that Avery needs an attention diversion. I don’t know if Robinson, can draw that kind of attention. I really doubt if any WR’s- in the draft, fit that bill.

I just looked him up, 75th pick overall in 2007, rated the 20th best WR in the draft that year, 6′2, 199 lbs. 4.34 in the 40. speedy guy.
So the numbers look good, now we have to give him the benefit of the doubt and see if he can play. Good pick up, especially when you consider that all we did was switch the order position in rounds 6th and 7th. Wow, good job Devaney! hope it works out.

Devaney got badly criticized by Mel Kiper for selecting Donnie Avery last season, and look what Avery did as a rookie. He was better than Chris Long in my humble opinion. Avery played a big part of the season with a hairline fracture of his hip. Imagine what he is capable of this year, if he is completely healthy!

I feel great about Laurent Robinson, because Devaney knows him, and helped draft him. We gave up virtually nothing to get him, and this kid has great upside! He has already proven he can play in this league. His 2007 stats were solid for a rookie! Way to go Mr. Devaney!!

This deal, like most every other one so far this off-season, makes a terrific amount of sense and isn’t costly–a great contrast to splashy, but useless acquisitions in the recent past. The move is modest but has a high upside–Robinson is young, fast, under the radar, and on the outs with his current team’s coaching staff. We give up draft positions in the later rounds and no players–a good deal.

I can’t wait to see how savvy the draft is by this group led by GM Devaney.

Like many, I don’t know too much about Laurent Robinson. But without too much playing time with the falcons essentially we’re getting a rookie with plenty of potential. Watch :

Another shrewd move by the Rams.

Laurent Robinson
Just how good this trade will be for the Rams depends on a number of factors. In college he was not know for being a physical wide receiver. He has good speed but not the breakaway burst that will give him separation after the catch. Therefore defensive backs often take him down after the catch. He has very good hands and can catch the ball in traffic. Some draft boards had him rated as high as the 11th wide receiver in the 2007 draft class. So he was a good pick at number three.
Both in college and in the pros he was plagued by injuries. His best year was his junior rear where he put up first round numbers. His senior year injuries moved him down in the draft. His lack of playing time due to injuries put him out of favor in 2008.
What the Rams gave for Robinson is equivalent to a 6th round draft pick. This is not much for a player who has a lot of potential and has proven that he can be a starter at the next level. To make the rooster he is going to have to improve his conditioning, bulk up and add some muscle with attitude. Many of his injuries are in large part due to lack of conditioning and strength. The Rams want their receivers to be able to block so Laurent is going to have to reinvent himself in that respect since he has never been known as even a mediocre blocker in his college days. The one thing he has going for him is that he is a very sure handed receiver who can catch the ball in stride. Despite what some people say he does have very good speed and is faster than most of the top prospects in this years draft. Time will tell how this trade works out. Robinson is going to have to spend a lot of time at Ram’s park improving his conditioning if this is going to workout.

This is one of those moves that flies under the radar, but can be an excellent move that helps solidify a team’s need. Robinson was targeted as a “an up and coming stud receiver” last year, but injuries nipped that in the bud. Now obviously he needs to prove that he can be that receiver and also stay healthy. But for what the Rams gave up to get him, it is well worth it because at worst he adds size and comes in to push the other young receivers the Rams have. At best he achieves that potential and flourishes for many years to come. I love his upside. It is tremendous, IF he can stay healthy. Here’s hoping for health and a fresh start pushing him pursue excellence.

Production, performance on the field and more production - every game, every down. Great to see the team’s stock improve. The new coaching staff hardly reads as the type to suffer half-hearted players. (”But one thing I do: forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me” - para phrase from Philippians 3:13,14)
