Report suggests FedEx CEO could be bidder for Rams

The St. Louis Business Journal is throwing out the name of Fred Smith, the chairman, president and CEO of FedEX, as a potential bidder for the Rams.

“Fred Smith was, and has been for a long time, intrested in obtaining an NFL franchise,” Dan Dierdorf told the Business Journal. “What makes him attractive in my mind is financially he is more than capable of the transaction. The NFL would not want two teams in Tennessee. But Adams, the (Titans owner) in Nashville would have a fit. Smith, would be a great choice because his hometown would not be a competitor with St. Louis. He could keep the Rams here long term.”

However, Dierdorf told Kathleen Nelson of the Post-Dispatch: “I do not know of any conversations that have taken place between Fred Smith and the Rams.”

So while Smith may certainly fit the profile of a potential bidder, it may be a bit early to define him as a candidate. Smith has declined comment.

Great reporting. Why don’t we just list all billionaires as possibility. Why would you report this?

Why is this guy being quoted? Who cares about his speculation? Does he have any more influence on who buys the team than anyone else? I doubt it. Someone tell him and his broadcast buddies that working in the lab and doing your job often contributes far more to society than endless dribble about the plane of the goal line.

We are going to have to put up with the sale rumor on the back burner all season long. This situation won’t come full circle for several years due to NFL approval, Dome lease, etc. There is too much positive momentum with the team to let this become a distraction. We should respect the fact that Chip is doing the right things and has tried everything in his power to buy time for someone to come forward in STL. He genuinely wants to see the team stay here. If he didn’t care, he would’ve unloaded the team immediately. Instead he has waited patiently, and nobody from STL has come forward. If we let another NFL franchise go, we will be reduced to a one horse town. I don’t believe this will happen. I grew up suffering through the Big Red. The Rams brought a proud franchise to STL. Second in overall playoff appearances in the entire league history (Dallas is #1). The NFL is cyclical. This team is about to rise up again. We NEED to find local ownership to keep them here.

Please keep blog posts like this coming. I don’t check every news outlet that exists for news on the Rams so boomeranging this tidbit from the Biz Journal is a nice touch.

I think it’s intriguing that a league insider like Dierdorf is sharing some knowledge on prospective albeit unconfirmed interest from a serious buying candidate. The most interesting part of this post is that Smith refused comment. Why refuse comment if you’re not interested in a possible purchase?

I love the suspense…
