Report suggests FedEx CEO could be bidder for Rams

The St. Louis Business Journal is throwing out the name of Fred Smith, the chairman, president and CEO of FedEX, as a potential bidder for the Rams.

“Fred Smith was, and has been for a long time, intrested in obtaining an NFL franchise,” Dan Dierdorf told the Business Journal. “What makes him attractive in my mind is financially he is more than capable of the transaction. The NFL would not want two teams in Tennessee. But Adams, the (Titans owner) in Nashville would have a fit. Smith, would be a great choice because his hometown would not be a competitor with St. Louis. He could keep the Rams here long term.”

However, Dierdorf told Kathleen Nelson of the Post-Dispatch: “I do not know of any conversations that have taken place between Fred Smith and the Rams.”

So while Smith may certainly fit the profile of a potential bidder, it may be a bit early to define him as a candidate. Smith has declined comment.

I can’t say who I am, as I work for fedEx, but didn’t the company just post losing $846 million? And he wants to buy an NFL team?

I think that this “story” could have waited until there was more substantive information available. It’s skimpy, speculative in the highest degree, and poorly written and, as such, it serves only to feed the rumor mill. I expect better from the P-D.

My question is, why isn’t the Post-Dispatch all over this? Aren’t there at least two full-time Rams beat reporters on staff (Thomas, Coats, others)? Where are they on these stories? Part of a beat is developing sources, constantly being in the know on every possible story, not just game stories and covering drafts, just punching the clock. Why do we have to turn to a business publication to learn of a potential bidder to buy one of our three pro sports teams?

At least some publications in town are keeping us in the know of any potential developments even if it’s defended by “maybe a bit early.” Perhaps there are more furloughs in order
