Ahman Green merely on Rams “ready list,” no signing imminent

Free agent running back Ahman Green visited Rams Park on Wednesday, team officials confirmed to the Post-Dispatch. But no signing is imminent. He is simply on the St. Louis Rams’ “ready list” of potential players to consider if the team suffers an injury at the position or decides to make a move.

Green, 32, was released by Houston during offseason after two-injury plagued years with the Texans. After signing a four-year, $23 million contract with the Texans, he played in only 14 games over the ‘07 and ‘08 seasons, gaining a total of 594 yards rushing with five touchdowns. He finished both seasons on the injuried reserve list because of knee injuries.

A four-time Pro Bowler, Green had his greatest success with Green Bay, where he posted six 1,000-yard seasons including five straight from 2000-2004. Current Rams running backs coach Sylvester Croom was Green’s position coach in Green Bay from 2001 through 2003.

I really don’t see what’s wrong with signing a veteran running back as a backup. The Rams weren’t interested in Fred Taylor which I thought was a mistake. If Green still shows something, then take him. What’s the point of going young at that position if the guys filling the position aren’t that good? So you go with a veteran to fill the position, unless you got a young guy that you really feel is going to develop into something, then fill the position with the best player possible until you find that young guy to build the team with.

The fact that the Rams are even looking at him at all tells me that they realize there is a severe lack of depth at the position.

Of course we would try sign a rb when we are desperate for help at WR

RAMS101–

The front office always looks at waiver wire transactions and street free agents. Much like a stock broker watching the market-ticker. I dont understand your surprise about this.

There must be something between Pittman and Spags…I think Pittman would be a great compliment to Jackson…he’s definitely the 2nd best RB on the team…

Can he block when the other team blitzes?

Edgerrin James is still a FA. I would much rather have him than Green who is fumble-prone. Plus Edge has proven to be great at blitz pick-up from his days in Indy and even w/the pass happy Cards!

Isn’t Cleveland Gary still available?

The reason that Edgerrin James, Fred Taylor, Ahman Green, Warrick Dunn are FA’s is that they aren’t going to help on special teams and if you’re not starting then you need to be a ST contributor. The Rams don’t have the luxury of using too many roster spots for players that don’t play ST.

BillP- Not that I’m against the move, but the reason you go young at RB is because RB’s take a lot of abuse and generally have shorter careers than other positions. Younger bodies with less miles on them simply heal faster.

The other problem would be the fact that our current star RB has a history of not sharing the spotlight very well when paired up with an aging superstar as his backup. Of course Ahman wasn’t the greatest St Louis Ram ever, so maybe motor mouth would have less to say about him.

As far as WR goes. Rams have depth issues all over the board. You can’t expect to erase all of Zygmunt’s mistakes in one season.
