Packers fans will witness retirement of Deacon Jones’ 75
In what seems to be a rather odd decision, the St. Louis Rams will retire Deacon Jones’ No. 75 at the regular-season home opener Sept. 27. The opponent will be the Green Bay Packers, and if history repeats, the Edward Jones Dome will be crawling with out-of-town fans in green and gold. Might it not be better to wait a couple of weeks, until the Vikings are in town?
In any case, it’s a well-deserved and long-overdue recognition for one of the NFL’s greatest defensive linemen.
Notes & quotes:
*Coach Steve Spagnuolo again had his players in full pads this morning, and for the fifth day in a row conducted live tackling sessions.
*FB Mike Karney (ankle) remains out. G John Greco twisted his ankle during 11-on-11 drills and left early.
*LB James Laurinaitis’ work with the No. 1 unit is increasing. When he’s with the ones in the middle, Chris Draft slides over to strongside LB.
*At this point, the No. 2 offensive line is: LT, Phil Trautwein; LG, Roy Schuening; C Mark Setterstrom; RG, Greco; and RT, Jason Smith.
*Spagnuolo admonished LB Chris Chamberlain for hitting RB Steven Jackson low in the live work. Later, Spagnuolo chastised DE Victor Adeyanju for jumping offside, negating a play in which the defense recovered a fumble.
*In kickoff drills, Kenneth Darby, Samkon Gado, Donnie Avery and Tim Carter took turns returning.
All for now . . . more following the afternoon practice.

I’m happy that Jackson is taking some big (or cheap) shots during training camp, as long as he doesn’t get hurt. It will pay off in the season. I’m also pulling for Larry Grand to beat out Draft on the stongside.
Larry Grant, sorry
Here’s a crazy idea - Ram season ticket holders show up and cheer for a home game….
Dream…I total agree on the contact. Chances are somebody is going to get hurt with all of the live drills but hopefully it pays off during the regular season.
I really like Setterstrom. Hopefully he can stay healthy this year because his versatility at center and guard coupled with his time at the Univ of Minnesota where they ran the ball 50 times a game (much like the Rams will do this year)would add much needed depth.
Jackson cant make it 4 games without injury. How in the world would contact in Aug Training camp be considered good for him? Poor decision by Rams Brass to retire Jones at what could basically be a Packer Home game.
It’s hard for any NFL runningback to not get dinged up after 4 games in todays NFL. Furthermore expressing the importance of a # 2 back. SJ is in camp from the beginning this year, couple that with more contact, it will pay off more than hurt him.
Part of the illusion of the Packers game was the Taco Bell t-shirt giveaway. Very similar gold.
Chad B….Why would you think the Rams will pound the ball 50 times per game? Read my lips….WEST COAST OFFENSE! Designed for the short passing game to create space for the run. Don’t know if it’s gonna work, but that’s the plan.
I would love to be at the home opener but I will not make it home in time to get the Ed Jones Dome. Out of town gig. BUT, the old man will not sell our tickets. Sure hope there is a huge turnout for the Rams!
Leave it to the Rams to schedule another big event when visiting fans take over our dome. Did they not learn their lesson when the Steelers were here a few years ago and it looked like the Rams were retiring Franco Harris instead of Marshall Faulk? I am glad we have a new coach because the front office is still stupid as ever. Go Rams.
