Rams-Falcons postgame: pluses, minsues, key stats and more
*PLUSES: Nice outing by WR Laurent Robinson (5 catches, 65 yards) . . . better showing by RB Kenneth Darby (7 carries, 30 yards) . . . 3-2 edge in turnover ratio . . . nice reactions by rookie LB James Laurinaitis and S Todd Johnson on interceptions off a tip . . . rookie QB Keith Null again looked composed, despite late interception.
*MINUSES: Woeful showing by first-team offense in run game, mostly because of poor blocking up front . . . Samkon Gado took a step backward after his big game vs. the Jets . . . a number of missed tackles by the first-team defense . . . a couple of bad drops by WRs.
*KEY STAT: Toss out an 11-yard scramble by QB Kyle Boller, and the first-team offense mustered only 15 yards on 15 carries in the first half.
*KEY PLAY: With the Rams down a touchdown in the final minute and on the Atlanta 13, Null aimed a pass into the end zone for TE Joe Klopfenstein. The throw was a bit high, the coverage was pretty good and Klopfenstein couldn’t quite make the catch.
*INJURIES: DT Gary Gibson (blow to head), T Phil Trautwein (back), DE James Hall (sternum), DE Eric Moore (ribs). None believed to be serious.
*WHAT’S NEXT: The players are off Saturday before returning to the practice field Sunday. The next preseason game is Thursday at Cincinnati.

I thought a another minus was Tye Hill’s awful coverage on the Gonzalez TD. He was turned around like a little girl on the first day of school. It may be time to cut the ties with Tye.
The D line should be ashamed! Kyle Boller is not accurate enough to play QB in the NFL!
Ram’s fans deserve better than what they saw Friday night!
I agree with Devaney that we seem to have all the receiving talent that we need. Atlanta is a top tier team so I’m not too worried about the subpar performance on both sides of the ball, but it doesn’t look like the Rams have enough talent and depth on either o-line or d-line to be competitive from week to week. The turnover edge would not have held up if the starters for both teams had played the whole game. Run blocking was poor; tackling was worse thanks to a porous d-line.
We’re going to need a great running game of our own if we’re going to have the ball run down our gut all year. Darby looked good…against Atlanta’s backups and cut down bait, but Pittman couldn’t even pull that off. I’d be down with scooping up Ahman Green if we didn’t already have one former Packer with an acute case of butterfingers. Ugh. Maybe Devaney can disguise himself as Bill Belichick and get Al Davis to hand over Michael Bush or Justin Fargas for a 7th round pick and a diamond encrusted cane. There’s got to be a decent #2 back out there somewhere…
well the game plan on offense looked about as conservative as you could get so it looked like the rams were just seeing how their running game looked without a real interest in playing this game to win. it was a pedestrian effort on offense. i think we will struggle to score 20 points in a game this year with this philosophy. it isn’t exciting football when you are going to be down 14-0 midway through the 1st quarter. funny how we used to be the team that was up 14-0 ten years ago.
Everyone just calm down. Bulger, Barron, Bell, and Avery were all out. Jackson played only one series and I’m thinking the pre-season game planning and playbook wasn’t what it would have been in a regular season game. Yes, I would have been happier if the offense did better, but to act like this is some sign of things to come is a bit pre-mature. As for the Defense, it was a sorry display of tackling plain and simple. If the first man to make contact would make the tackle, then its a totally different game. Poor tackling made Atlanta look like their run offense was in mid-season form when in reality the Rams had many many plays blown up or stopped for only a yard or two had the FIRST man made the tackle. Despite all this the Rams remained in the game until the final plays. So everyone just take a deep breath and look for the improvements that should come as the team moves forward.
More of the same!!!! When is management going to get a quality backup QB? Berlin was clearly better than Null and Boller, but once again, he gets little or no credit. It looks like the Rams cannot even perform the WCO, which is mostly dink & dunk. I was thinking 7-9 this season, but after today, more than likely 4-12. Boy are these Rams pathetic or what? It is beginning to look like Devaney can’t draft anybody either. BTW, put Smith in at LT, his natural position, and put Goldberg at RT, next week.
The first-string defense seemed a far greater minus than the offense. On offense we played without Bulger; for the most part without Jackson and Karney; without Avery; and with a make-shift offense life. Plus timing a new offense is trickier than a new defense. The defense however seemed truly woeful. On its first drive Atlanta ran the ball up our backs, with very poor Rams tackling; and on the second drive Atlanta passed the ball down our throats.
Your pluses, Mr. Thomas, look on target. To my eyes Keith Null clearly has the best arm among all our quarterbacks, both strong and with touch. Had Billy Bajema been in when Null passed into the endzone and Klopfenstein couldn’t make the catch, the Rams might have tied the game. Null looks like out backup QB to me, and perhaps the starter of the future — we’ll see — and Bajema, who can catch as well as block, had an excellent game and belongs among the pluses.
Sorry, Mr Thomas, I wrongly assumed this article was by you, when Mr. Coats wrote the piece.
I was at the game and was really disappointed with our first team defense. It was as if the middle of the D-Line wasn’t even there.
Boller wearing number 13 in the game was a shock! To bring in a backup quarterback and give him the number of the best quarterback in franchise history and a probable Hall of Famer was upsetting to see. I also think it was a sign of disrespect for Kurt and all he did for our team and community. As much as I want the Rams to win every game, I must admit I won’t be too upset if the two number 13’s go head-to-head when Arizona comes to town and Kurt lights it up for 400-plus yards.
