Rams get good news on Barron’s knee

An MRI exam of Alex Barron’s knee came out clean, meaning that there is no serious problem. The St. Louis Rams’ first-team left tackle is day-to-day with swelling in the joint, coach Steve Spagnuolo reported this afternoon.

Barron, who has been experiencing periodic swelling during training camp, sat out both practices Tuesday. Adam Goldberg took first-team reps at left tackle, with rookie Jason Smith moving up to the top unit at right tackle.

Notes & quotes:

*Tuesday was the final two-practice day, much to the relief of the players (and reporters).

*Camp officially wraps up at the end of the day Sunday. That means that only two more practices will be open to the public: From 11:15 a.m. to about 12:45 p.m. today, and from 2:30 to about 4:45 p.m. Sunday.

*Officials representing Conference USA, the Missouri Valley, Western Athletic and Mountain West conferences worked the two practices, tossing flags when penalties occurred.

*With Jacob Bell (concussion) still sidelined, Mark Setterstrom and John Greco both took snaps at LG with the No. 1 offense.

*A contingent of Blues officials, including president John Davidson, general manager Larry Pleau and coach Andy Murray, watched the morning workout from the sideline.

*The players were in full pads in the first practice, but there was no live tackling. They were in shells in the afternoon.

*WR Keenan Burton and DE Eric Moore were shaken up briefly after taking hard tumbles in team drills, but both were back in action after a few plays.

*Friday night’s home preseason game vs. the Falcons didn’t sell out, so it can’t be televised live locally. But KTVI, Channel 2, will air it on tape delay later that night after the game ends, according to Rams exec Kevin Demoff.

*Updated injury list: Barron, Bell, WR Donnie Avery (foot), QB Marc Bulger (finger), DT Adam Carriker (ankle), WR Tim Carter (groin), WR Brooks Foster (ankle), DT Darell Scott (knee).

All for now…

good news about Barron. He’s still young and if he can gain concentration can be a good tackle. I really want to see how he does at left tackle. All the experts think he’ll excel at that position. We don’t need any major injuries to the offensive line now.

I agree with Ram o Rama he can still be a good left tackle. Not many ppl no that his best season came at left tackle. RT and LT are different positions and barron played LT in college so hes more used to that side. Just give him time he should be a good LT now that hes getting the chance to play at his original position.

Please let us get through the season without a ton of injuries [he says looking upward]. I think we can be a decent team if we can just stay out of the training room.

If you really follow football, you would know that last year was Alex Barron’s best. He was solid, yet un-spectacular. For a 5 year starter, he has been remarkable healthly and injury free. Compare to FA signings of Bell and Brown, Barron is good value salary-cap wise. Yes, he does have problems with concentration, but all the physical tools (size, long arms, quick feet, attitude) are there. Compare to previous tackles like St.Clair and Tucker, Barron is a good fit. With this being his last year, I expect Barron to up his game to get a big contact next year. If you get rid of him NOW, you take a hit on salary cap, you have to spend $$$ on a FA, or spend another draft choice. On the offensive, the positions that are hurting TE (unless MicMichael makes a comeback) and a blocking FB.

You ALL are too hard on Barren. He is not a great lineman, but a servicable one. The kind of guy all teams need. He is not a leader, but a follower, and under proper motivation and leadership can be serviceable. I feel he will have a great season, its contract year. Right now my main concern on the offensive line, and the guy everyone should start jumping on instead of Alex is J Bell. What has this guy done in 1+ seasons. My guess is his contract will get flushed next season and we will still be looking for a guard and tackle again next year.

no landon last season wasnt his best not trying to be a smart ass but look at 2007 when he played LEFT tackle, all the other years he played RT.

yea hes def a better LT than RT simple as that ppl need to understand hes built to play on the left side

But then again…what do I know. I’m only an assclown. He might turn out to be pretty good. Better than I’ll ever be at anything in my life. Pretty sad now that I think of it. Maybe I’ll just go stick my head in a toilet and flush.
