The St. Louis Rams have released linebacker Quinton Culberson and offensive tackle Eric Young to make room for newly signed linebacker Paris Lenon and wide receiver Ruvell Martin.

Culberson, started 11 games for St. Louis over the 2007 and ‘08 seasons, including 10 starts last year, when he finished with 56 tackles and one fumble recovery. Undrafted out of Mississippi State, Culberson totaled a career high 14 tackles in the ‘07 season finale at Arziona, but never lived up to the promise he showed in that game. Culberson was cut in early September when the Rams’ claimed two players (Anthony Smith and LeJuan Ramsey) on waivers, but re-signed last Thursday when Chris Draft was cut.

Young was signed as a street free agent in May. The University of Tennessee product entered the NFL as an undrafted rookie by the Cleveland Browns in 2008, but failed his physical as a result of a lingering college injury and was subsequently waived by the Browns. Young was a surprise name on the Rams’ 53-man roster following this preseason in St. Louis, beating out Phil Trautwein and Renardo Foster for the fourth tackle spot.

I can’t help but feel a little sorry for Culberson. “Sorry, it didn’t work out.” “Q, welcome back!” “Nope, sorry, it really didn’t work out.”

Devaney was clearly not ready for this job. How do the rest of the players even get motivated to play for this team when they could be gone next week. Even if you are one of the guys that actually performed. I do not buy this NO TALENT montra that the front office and the St. Louis media are talking about. If the Rams have not talent, then release Avery, Jackson, Little, Otogwe…yes exactly…those guys would flurish elsewhere. The only place this team is lacking talent is IN THE FRONT OFFICE. Devaney is an amatuer. The laughter around the league is at an all time high.

Common people, get real, this is life in the NFL if you are not a great player. If you are on the edge, you better play like hell in training camp and practices. These guys better be motivated to keep their jobs. I have no problem with trying to make our reserve players better…who knows when they will have to step in!

Now bring back Chris Draft!! and start Boller. Like Bulger a lot and has a good passing arm but Boller is more solid and not rattled as easily (pre-season 2009)

I don’t think the whole league is laughing at Devaney. Jesse R, you don’t have a clue. I guess you could do a better job. You have no idea what it takes to field a team from week to week. I’m not saying I do either, but I’m not among those questioning their judgement. Culbertson was nothing more than a “just in case” stopgap, until they had a chance to sign someone they thought had more potential. He’s not what you build your future around. They’ve seen what he can do. Right now, they are looking for young players who they can put to the test, to see if they can be part of the rebuilding that has to be done. Any grousing at all about what Spags and Devaney are doing right now is totally unfounded. They are building for and looking to the future, maybe next year, more likely the year after that until we are really competitive. Wait two years, and then we can really judge whether Spags and Devaney are doing the right things or not. It’s way too early to judge anything now.
