Spags adds another d-lineman to his collection

St. Louis Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo loves his defensive linemen. He added another to his Rams Park collection Thursday when the team signed defensive tackle Leger Douzable to the practice squad. To make room for Douzable on the 8-member practice squad, the Rams released linebacker K.C. Asiodu.

Douzable’s biological father is of Haitian descent. His first name (Leger) rhymes with “D.J.” The last name (Douzable) rhymes with “usable.”

Spagnuolo hopes Douzable is a usable player in St. Louis. Signed as an undrafted rookie out of Central Florida in 2008 by Minnesota, Douzable spent the first week of ‘08 on the Vikings’ practice squad, then spent the next 11 games on the New York Giants’ practice squad. Douzable (6-4, 305) was promoted to the Giants’ active roster for the final four games of ‘08, but didn’t appear in any games. He opened ‘09 on New York’s 53-man roster, didn’t play in the opener against Washington, and was released Tuesday.

“I’m obviously familiar with him, from being in New York,” Spagnuolo said. “I think he’s a character guy. He’s got some talent. I thought it was an opportunity to get him in here, see what he could do, and how he would mix with the guys here.”

The addition of Douzable gives the Rams 12 defensive linemen on the practice field _ 10 d-linemen on the active roster and two on the practice squad. Practice squad members practice with the team, but cannot play in games.

Many of the people who comment here are unrealistic in their expectations of the Rams this year and what the new regime should accomplish. Anyone who has followed the team should understand how miserably they have handled personnel decisions for the past decade. Their talent is way down compared to most teams. Giving the new management the benefit of the doubt for now, it is going to take them several seasons to field a playoff level team. They have obviously decided not to bother hanging on to veterans who don’t have a good prospect to be part of the long term solution. They are taking advantage of all the little opportunities that the NFL’s system provides for upgrading their general talent level, even if just a little bit and just for now. (And it is becoming obvious that we need a good young quarterback who can do more things athletically than Bulger. But that change just can’t happen yet due to economic and other factors.) So, everything is new: ownership, management, coaches, players, offensive and defensive systems, etc. If they didn’t stink at the beginning of this year, particularly the offense, it would be a small miracle. So for now, just relax. Let Spags do his thing for a couple of seasons. Stop hyperventilating over every little personnel move that is really not of much consequence over the long term (ie., Chris Draft). If over the course of this season we see the emergence of some good young talent, see a new culture and team personality take hold, see the team start to gel, then it’s a successful year considering the circumstances. And next year we can shed the bottom tier of our players again and upgrade further through free agency and draft. That’s what has to happen here.

I do NOT think it is unfair or unreasonable to DEMAND that the St. Louis Rams can get the play in on time, stay on-side and get the play off, regardless of crowd noise. I do NOT think it is unfair to DEMAND we play hard nose football until the whistle blows. The spag-wagon acts like we lost 14-13…IT WAS 28-0.

I DEMAND BETTER COACHING AND BETTER PRODUCTION.

bigman is right. It was 28-0. 12 men on the field, 90 yards in penalties are not talent issues.

yayyyyyy. another subpar player from either ATL or NYG descent. does devaney know that we can actually pursue players from the other teams in teh nfl?!?!?!?

devaney is a HORRIBLE GM … it’s no wonder he got his forst shot with a team that didn’t have one for years … they wouldn’t know a good one from a bad one. of course, they chose one who is sub-standard.

i really miss martz … yes, i said it and i mean it! at least we had an identity and produced an entertaining brand of football. AND we actually SCORED POINTS!!!!!!!!!!

get ready bc this piece-o-spam team will enter week 3 without scoring an offensive TD.

great offseason billy.

Patience naysayers. I may be wrong, but I think Spags and Devaney are putting things together bit by bit. Spags saw this guy in practice alot. Remember what happened when the Giants lost Strahan to retirement and then Umeniora (spelling apology) to injury? They plugged someone else in who kicked butt.
