Rams sign OT Trautwein to 53-man roster
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
Offensive tackle Phil Trautwein, who spent the preseason and training camp with the St. Louis Rams, has rejoined the team. The Rams signed Trautwein, a rookie from Florida, off the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad Tuesday.
The Rams cut Trautwein on Sept. 5, planning to re-sign him to their practice squad once he cleared waivers. But he was claimed instead by Cleveland, spending the first four weeks of this season on the Browns’ 53-man roster. Trautwein didn’t play in those four games, then was cut by the Browns and spent the past two weeks on their practice squad.
The Rams returned the favor Tuesday by signing Trautwein to their active roster. Wide receiver Nate Jones was cut to make room for Trautwein.

The Rams seemed to be pretty high on this kid during training camp, and it’s necessary to keep pressure on our current group of OTs. Hopefully Smith keeps progressing, and Barron will be gone at the end of the year. We’ll need the depth there next year.
Can they still trade Barron? When is the deadline? I would’ve rather them trade him then Spoon who could’ve helped the next 3 years when rebuilding.
John, the trade deadline expired at 3:00pm this afternoon, so they can’t trade Barron any longer. The reports were that he was on the block, but it looks like they couldn’t get what they wanted for him.
Can we get someone to monitor this site so that comments like mistro’s are not published. This person is vulgar! He/she has already polluted another site this evening. Let’s clean this up, please. As to the trade, Witherspoon, although a nce guy, wasn’t getting much done, and we definitely need someone who can catch the ball. Good move.
Oops! My previous comment belongs on the blog about the Witherspoon trade. Sorry for the mixup.
Trautwein wasn’t considered good enough to be drafted by anyone, so I wouldn’t go so far as to say that he’ll be a star. But he was a beast at right tackle in college and I can see the potential for him starting on this team at right tackle in the future if he responds well to some technique coaching (where’s Hanifan when you need him). Jason Smith’s future is at left tackle and Alex Baron’s future is on another team, so we do need someone at that position next year. Remember too that right tackle is more of a strength and mauling position, so Phil should be a good fit there, especially after a full off-season of conditioning. I was disappointed that we cut him to begin with and kept some useless slug with no potential (don’t remember his name, but he’s gone), so let’s give him some coaching and work with him.
Smart move to cut Nate Jones. We have waaaaaaaayy too many receivers as it is. Let’s dress one guy next game.
As if it matters. Nate Jones never did anything and neither will Trautwein. That 53rd spot has changed like 20 times this season.
If the new front office/coaching staff doesn’t have the team playing much better and contending after three years then run them out of town. Until then let these guys do their job! This team is so weak talent wise that it will take that long to become a contender.
