The St. Louis Rams have traded starting linebacker Will Witherspoon to the Philadelphia Eagles for rookie wide receiver Brandon Gibson and a fifth-round draft pick next season.

Also linebacker K.C. Asiodu has been promoted from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. LB Dominic Douglas has been cut to make room for Asiodu.

In a statement released by the Rams, coach Steve Spagnuolo explained the deal by saying: “We were presented with a unique opportunity to improve our team.”

Here’s a link to the page for Witherspoon’s career stats.

No need to link to Gibson’s page. The sixth-round pick out of Washington State appeared in one game this season and did not catch a pass.

“Brandon is a young receiver that we have followed since training camp,” Rams GM Billy Devaney said in a statement. “He has good size (6-0 and 210), good hands and had a very productive preseason. His familiarity with our offensive system should help his transition to our team.”

Are you Freaking kidding me? Did Zygie and Shaw reappear. A starter for a third stringer and a fifth round pick. C’mon Devaney.

This is what’s called trading value for potential. It’s what bad teams have to do in order to have a chance at gettin better. Evidently, the coaching staff is comfortable with their depth at LB, and obviously we need some more recievers.

One of the VERY FEW players whose name is called for making a play once in a while on defense is traded? What happened?

Hmmm. Well, people asked about addressing the WR spot. So much for the improvement in the defense. Congratulations, Will Witherspoon!

The rams are a joke! Really some bum wide out and a 5th round pick for witherspoon. I will NOT be renewing my season tickets! Good luck witherspoon, I bet you are happy to get out of this mess!

I expect we might also free up some salary cap space with this move, but I don’t claim to be a cap expert…

Any chance the P-D could trade Brian Burwell for someone with integrity and ethics?

Are the Rams trying to lose money? and fans? so they can move?

Mistake. Effective rebuilding starts with a good defense then O-line. Don’t think so, you think it starts with scoring (QB, RB, WR)? Look at Denver. Kyle Orton and a couple of what’s their names at RB are 6-0 ON THEIR FIRST REBUILDING YEAR. They have awesome defense and a solid O-line. Yes they do have good WR’s, but they had them last year too and didn’t make the playoffs. You can’t use the excuse that they were better last year than the Rams because they turned over half their roster in the offseason. Of course maybe the RAMS are just trying to create a discount team that will sell easier.
