Spagnuolo makes it clear: Bulger is the No. 1 quarterback
Coach Steve Spagnuolo made it crystal clear Monday: There will be no quarterback controversy at Rams Park. At least not this week.
Marc Bulger and Kyle Boller are both a little banged-up. Bulger is recovering from the shoulder injury he suffered Sept. 27 vs. the Packers and Boller sustained what Spagnuolo termed a “mild concussion” in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 38-10 home loss to the Vikings.
But even if both show up for practice Wednesday in the pink of health, there will be no competition for the starting job. “Marc’s the quarterback,” Spagnuolo said unequivocally.
Boller started the last two games after Bulger went down. On Sunday, he guided the offense on three drives deep into Vikings territory, but each was scuttled by a turnover. He also lost a fumble that was returned for a touchdown and threw an interception in the end zone.
After Boller was hurt, Bulger hit on all seven of his passes, including a 27-yard TD to WR Donnie Avery. Granted, Bulger was going against Minny’s defensive reserves.
“We have the luxury of two guys who know how to manage the game, two guys that the offense has confidence in,” Spagnuolo said. But make no mistake: If he’s ready, Bulger will start Sunday in Jacksonville.
Notes & quotes:
*DT Gary Gibson is done for the season after breaking his left ankle Sunday.
*The other injuries were minor: DE Chris Long (chest), TE Daniel Fells (neck), CB Justin King (bruised knee).
*Spagnuolo said S James Butler (knee) and T Jason Smith (knee) will be day-to-day. Smith dressed Sunday but didn’t play.
*In one of his best games, LT Alex Barron held Pro Bowl DE Jared Allen without a sack or a quarterback hit.
*Without Gibson, Spagnuolo indicated that the Rams might go with a three-man rotation up front, or retain their four-man rotation by adding someone, perhaps fourth-round draftee Darell Scott.
*WR Donnie Avery said he apologized to the team for his ill-timed, fourth-quarter end-zone dance following his TD catch. The Rams were trailing by 21 points at the time. “I wasn’t real fond of it,” Spagnuolo said.
All for now . . .

We have two QBs who aren’t very good. That is the problem.
Bulger should be the QB, he gives us the best chance to win. People need to lay off Avery, he’s a young kid who’s learning.
QB of the future: Bradford? Locker? Other?
Gibson being hurt is horrible. That cheap shot ended his season. The league should come down on that guy.
Bulger gives us the best chance to win? Win what? The league record for most consecutive losses? Boller is no Joe Montana–or even Joe Ferguson, for that matter–but he moves the offense better than Marc and escapes trouble–of which there is plenty–far better than Marc. Our “#1″ QB executed a TD drive against a second string defense yesterday. DO NOT lose sight of that all important fact, folks.
bulger is a proven loser. why not give anyone else a chance..i say, anyone?
No way, we are considering playing our 4th round draft choice. The fact that so few of the mid to late round draft choices ever contribute to the Rams makes you believe that every team wastes picks after the first two rounds. Maybe the scouting service the Rams use only offer day one choices and the Rams are left to fend for themselves on day two.
The league should come down hard on Who? The league my ass. The players new what happened. They may not have known right away but there was plenty of time for the Rams Players to take care of this! Where is our best Wideout? Oh gone from a cheap shot by by the Packer DB, this also should have been taken care of on the field!! Gutless! The Rams from the Owners to the Coaches and most of the players are gutLESS! I would rather watch Ingonito hit someone than take this beating! Is there no sense of pride on this team?!
Ray, our #1 QB played this Saturday not Sunday.
We need a QB of the future, but Bulger is the best QB on the roster now. Boller led the team to 3 points in 2 starts. He effectively ended the game early with his pathetic fumble yesterday. Boller is not good enough to warrant a controversy, even as to Bulger.
Avery’s jig was an embarrassment, but at least he apologized. I think he’s going to be a productive #2-3 receiver, but we still need a #1.
