Spagnuolo “very, very, very happy” with Rams’ energy

Coach Steve Spagnuolo was almost giddy after Wednesday’s practice, the first for the St. Louis Rams since a 38-10 home loss to the Vikings on Sunday dropped them to 0-5.

“I was very, very, very happy about the energy today,” Spagnuolo said. “I thought the guys came out with a lot of energy, which is a good thing. It’s a credit to them, and I certainly appreciate it.”

Still, as defensive end Chris Long pointed out, the winless Rams don’t have a lot of options as they try to dig out of their 0-5 hole.

“You don’t really have a choice but to keep grinding away,” Long said. “Continuing to work hard and try to keep going up, that’s the only way we can do it. Build on the little things that we’re doing well and try to make those things big things.

“It’s no different than any other week. We’re trying to get that win, just the same as if we were 5-0.”

Notes & quotes:

*QB Marc Bulger took all the reps with the first-team offense and reported afterward that he was “on course” to start Sunday in Jacksonville. Bulger had been out with a bruised shoulder.

*Kyle Boller, who started in Bulger’s spot the past two games, passed his neuro exam and ran the scout team at practice. Spagnuolo said Boller will be retested Friday, just to be sure he’s OK to back up Boller vs. the Jaguars.

*T Jason Smith (knee), S James Butler (knee), CB Justin King (knee) and S Anthony Smith (Achilles’ tendon) were limited. WR Ruvell Martin (hamstring) did not practice.

*This week’s captains are C Jason Brown (offense), CB Ron Bartell (defense) and long-snapper Chris Massey (special teams).

*LaJuan Ramsey took the bulk of the first-team snaps in the defensive tackle spot that opened when Gary Gibson broke his left ankle Sunday. Gibson, who has been placed on injured reserve, had successful surgery Tuesday, Spagnuolo reported.

*WR Sean Walker, a member of the practice squad, played the role of ex-Rams WR Torry Holt on the scout team. Holt is the Jaguars’ leading receiver, with 22 catches for 306 yards.

All for now…

I could not care less about Limbaugh, Sharpton, Jackson, or any other political commentator. What I care about is the Rams staying in St. Louis under the dierction of a competent owner. Whether you love Limbaugh or hate him is irrelevant. The obvious fact is that Checketts has a better chance of purchasing the Rams without Limbaugh in his group. And I think most intelligent sports fans in this city will agree, based on what he has done with the Blues, Checketts controlling the Rams would be a good thing for St. Louis.

Nice update, really hate to see Gibson out. He was one of the players like Robinson that was becoming a real asset. Ramsey sounded like a good pick up too, we will see sooner than later.

I think it’s admirable that the players are still trying to win. I hope they do win. But, they are supposed to earn their big checks. So, this is in the category of taking credit for things you should be doing anyway. My fear is that the Rams are so far behind the NFL talent curve, that all the heart in the world, just won’t be enough to earn a win. I sure hope Devaney is working very late at night. His performance is the key to turning anything around. Now, that we’ve scared off Checketts, good luck keeping a team that is not filling seats. NFL fans in the Lou must really be happy with Burwell and Sharpton.

Spagnola is the man to get us through this. Trade as many vets like Little, & Barron and anyone else that won’t be around for when he gets this turned around. Build that Offensive Line! Jason Smith at LT

How’s this for going out on a limb - I’ve been bashing as much as anyone, but I saw quite a few positive signs in last week’s game (not counting the scoreboard) that I pick the Rams to beat Jax this weekend.

I couldn’t follow the Vikings game (traveling), but when I came back & reviewed it, I must say, the team looked A LOT better than the score. I have to agree with the last poster who felt positive about our chances against the Jags. If we can figure out how to stop Jones-Drew (who I recommended to management before his draft, Citing his 500 yards and five touchdown performance against the Washington Huskies - IN ONE GAME) we can stop their offense - unlike trying to handle Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor and the Vikings grfeat line and blocking- plus, of course, Farve. This could be the year’s first win. There are a lot of good young players on this team. Regarding the QB situation, even on the touchdown he threw, Bulger was short to Avery, and Avery bailed him out big time. Come On, lets try Null. Could be he can make a difference.

The coaches must be watching different games than we are. Enough about energy in practice. Boller brought energy to the game. So did Null.
