Marshall Faulk Sounds Off

Good evening…

Retired Rams RB Marshall Faulk, an analyst for the NFL Network, was a Tuesday afternoon guest of the “Fox Hole” radio show hosted by Martin Kilcoyne and Maurice Drummond on Team 1380 AM.    www.team1380.net

Faulk, the future Hall of Famer, had a lot of strong things to say about the sorry state of the Rams and their season-opening 38-3 loss at Philadelphia.

With a big thank you to Team 1380 producer Ben Boyd, who recorded and transcribed the interview, here are some excerpts of Faulk’s most notable comments…

Faulk suggested that the Rams should be better than they are:

“Decisions have to be made. Do you blow it up, where do you go, what do you do? I mean, players that have had big time success, we’re talking Pro Bowl caliber players: Marc Bulger, Torry Holt, Orlando Pace, Steven Jackson. They look like they don’t belong in the league. And it’s not because they can’t play. You’re not going to tell me that. I’m not believing that they all of a sudden can’t play in this league.”

Faulk contrasting the Bears’ upset of Indianapolis to the Rams’ poor play:

“You’re not going to tell me that the (Bears) offense that they put out there is more talented than the offense that the Rams put out. It’s preparation, it’s understanding what you have; it’s having guys that are reliable.”

Faulk, on the Rams’ decision to release WR Isaac Bruce to open a starting job for Drew Bennett:

“I’m sorry, I’m a little biased to Isaac Bruce. I love Isaac Bruce, and I’ll let facts be known that there’s no way — and I don’t dislike Drew Bennett — but there is no way that this guy is better than Isaac or belongs or should be on that team instead of Isaac. It’s things like that, it’s misjudgment of talent. The guy’s been hurt. He’s often hurt. No knock on him personally, but they needed (Bruce). They could have used him (Sunday).”

Faulk on Steven Jackson:

“I said this earlier in the year, and I think people took it wrong, because I heard a couple comments. I said the Rams shouldn’t pay Steven Jackson. I don’t understand why they’re going to pay him. And I think people took it, like, maybe Steven’s not good or not dynamic. When you can’t block, and when you can’t sack the quarterback and stop the run, there’s no need to have a running back like this. There’s no need to pay him what you’re going to pay him–you’re not going to get to use him. What was he, like, 11 (actually 14 carries) for 40 yards? That’s a lot of money sitting in the backfield, and not have it or be able to use it, or you fall behind by 20 points. Now he’s definitely out of the game. And his effectiveness and what you love about him and what you’re paying him for is no longer necessary. I only forecasted that the Rams would be playing from behind, and people thought I was taking a jab at Steven–it had nothing to do with Steven; it had more to do with the team.”

Faulk on Rams defensive coordinator Jim Haslett:

“I love Jim. I used to find his defenses to be the most complicated to play against. And now I look back and I say even at (age) 35 with a bum knee I might go for maybe a hundred yards rushing and another hundred receiving right now,” against the Rams defense.

 Faulk continued talking about Haslett:

“I like Jim. I’ve always thought highly of him. And I don’t know, maybe he’s upset of the old Rams-Saints days and he’s throwing games or whatever. Some of the things I saw happening out there the other day, I wonder when he sat in his office yesterday morning, what was his mindset? Was he thinking, ‘I need to change it up.’ Was he thinking, ‘my players screwed it up.’ Or was he thinking that he messed it up. Because one of the three things happened, or needs to happen.”

(Note: I think Faulk was joking about Haslett throwing games).

Faulk said Rams coaches should avoid showing the players the game film from Philadelphia:

“I went through a rough patch like this with the Colts, and coaches often don’t even want to look at the film. You don’t want guys to look at the film because it can be so bad that when players notice that it’s that bad, it’s hard to recover from. So I’m hoping that he didn’t allow them to watch the film, the coaches watched it and they go out there and try to make corrections and try to get guys to move forward from the debacle that happened. Something like that can linger though out a whole season just like last year with the Dolphins. It’s tough to get over losses like that.”

If you’d like to listen to an audio of the entire Faulk interview, it is posted at Ben Boyd’s web site, www.STLsportsInsider.com

OK, a quick postscript from me on this:

* I know for a fact that Faulk wants to step in and do what he can to turn the Rams around … he is willing to come back as a personnel executive or possibly even as a head coach … but he will not do so as long as Scott Linehan is the coach. And he probably would stay away as long as Jay Zygmunt is the GM. Faulk has told me that he likes Zygmunt personally but isn’t sure how a working relationship would go.

* Faulk has a good rapport with Rams managing partner Chip Rosenbloom and Rams president John Shaw.

* I believe Marshall is being a little disingenuous about the Steven Jackson stuff. I don’t think he has a lot of love for Jackson. I don’t think Jackson has a lot of love for Marshall; let’s just be honest about this. And I know Faulk wants to see how Jackson competes after signing the big contract.

* Faulk has intense feelings about the Rams and is saddened and frustrated by their demise … after having the best and most successful years of his career in St. Louis, he is disgusted by the decline of the franchise, which he blames on many years of terrible mistakes made on personnel decisions. It kills him inside when he hears the Rams being the butt of jokes with analysts at the NFL Network, or elsewhere on TV. Some critics will say that Faulk should hold his comments instead of speaking up and possibly creating controversy … I disagree. He’s like anyone else who loves the Rams. He’s mad as Hell. And it’s hard to keep those feelings bottled up.

This won’t be the last time we’ll hear from Faulk this season …

Marshall is a HOFer on AND off the field. Man, do we Rams fans miss #28 — not that there was ever any doubt that we would. Thanks for sharing his comments for us out-of-town fans, Bernie.

Agreed, it’s like last year ran right into this season. I would love to see Marshall come back as personnel guy. Goodbye Linny and Ziggy. Welcome Marshall and a head coach with strong leadership skills.

What class you show Marshall. Isaac Bruce (who has much more value than you) had 0 catches last week. The Rams made the decision to cut Bruce because they didn’t want to commit cap space to a vet who might not be able to perform for them but still ate up cap space … sound familiar? How did you feel cashing those checks when you weren’t even in the house … at practice, or at the games? When Jackson said he learned more from Holt and Bruce than you about playing in the league everyone said he was disrespecting you. He told the truth, you couldn’t handle being replaced.
Steven can’t block? Who missed the block that allowed Rodney Harrison to destroy Trent Green’s knee? That was you buddy. You were traded away from the Colts at the prime of your career and the Colts sucked at that time … what does that say about you? They treated you much better than I saw the kids you rudely blew off who wanted an autograph; their “Marshall Faulk moment”.
I laugh when I see this “kinder, gentler” Marshall Faulk on the NFL Network who never had time for anybody but himself. All of your accomplishments can’t hide the fact that you cared for nobody but yourself.

he never said steven couldnt block. he was talking about people not being able to block for steven. saying that hes useless if the rest of the team cant function. learn how to read.

uffda31131….uh, did Marshall Faulk snub you when you asked for an autograph or something??? I don’t know where this, what can only be described as, hatred came from, but your comments are misplaced. Marshall Faulk is one of the best Rams of all time. Isaac Bruce should never have been let go, especially to have an injury-prone Drew Bennett replace him. Now, that being said…I do agree with you on the Steven Jackson not being able to block thing. He can block, above-average, I’d say. Marshall Faulk was an excellent blocker. I think you forget that when Rodney Harrison got to Trent Green, it was Marshall’s first year with the Rams. Like every other guy who joins a new team, he needed to learn the blocking schemes. Marshall Faulk would be perfect for the Rams. He needs to be somewhere on those sidelines short from being on the field. Assistant, yes. Head Coach, absolutely. He’s exactly what they need. He knows how to motivate. I’m behind Linehan for now, but I don’t know how much more us Rams fans can take of this.

Faulk would bring more to the Rams than the entire coaching staff and front office combined. Not that I’m a fan of Al Davis, but I’m pretty sure he would’ve even recognized that Scott Linehan is an absolutely horrific coach and pulled the plug on him early last year as he did with Shanahan years back. When I watch Linehan stand there on the sidelines with that clueless look that we’ve all come to know and hate, I can’t believe he’s the man we picked (over the likes of Ron Rivera and others) it makes me sick….

Bernie, you are right on the money. It’s time for Marshall to rejoin the StL Rams on a daily, permament basis. Time for yet another blockbuster trade and bring back #28. By the way, it would be excellent to have D’Marco Farr involved as well with his enthusiasm and knowledge of the game. It’s always entertaining to listen to his words, via TV or radio. Yes, this stuff has gone on long enough up here in North County, at Rams Park. Win or lose, effort must always be a constant in any walk of life.

Why not give Marshall a chance? The guy is just like any body else that cares and roots for the Rams. I mean, I have never been on this website as much as I have in the last couple of days. It seems like nobody was pissed at losing. How dare management ask for or even hint at a new stadium, when they can’t put a average product on the field. This just makes me CRAZY, and I live in L.A.
I agree with Marshall 100%. Who’s ever decision it was to let Issac go and keep Drew should be fired, period. PREPERATION. If you have a player that’s not doing his job (Ty “Bust” Hill) you sit him down and give someone else a chance. Playing in the NFL is a privilege not a right. Things have to change or it’s time to see who we can draft….with the FIRST OVERALL PICK.

The rams are just a group of sad sacks collecting a paycheck, they are not a team and signing Jackson was just adding another talented guy but not a team focused player, worried about himself, I think what makes the Patriots so special is that they weed out the players who are not focused on the team, maybe the Rams need to hire less talented but more team focused guys. I think heart goes a long way compared to a bunch of talented primadonna’s not laying it on the line, I don’t envy anyone who has to coach this group.

Meno to Chip R - If the Rams lay a bigger egg againist the Giants than they did againist the Eagles, please make some immediate changes. At least give Rams fans something to root for in the future. Don’t let another season go down the drain with the same sad sack management/coaching group.

Is it just me or is anyone else here beginning to see a Jerome Bettis situation starting to brew? Can’t do anything behind a poor offensive line and then gets traded to a team with a good line and he resurrects his career. I’m not saying it would happen and the rams would trade jackson, but wouldn’t that be eerie if it did. I could totally see Jackson racking up monster numbers begind a good line.

— bhthumbkins
6:34 am September 10th, 2008

Please, Chip, clean house in the front office and put Faulk in charge. It would be nice to finally have someone who both cares about the team and who can actually evaluate talent.

I mean, what do they have to lose? It’s not like there’s even anything to build on right now. Might as well give Marshall the keys and see where he can take us.

I personally love it when guys like Faulk speak their minds openly and honestly (Well MOSTLY Honest. I agree with Bernie that I don’t think Marshall has a whole lot of love or respect for Jackson. I probably think this as neither do I.)

I’m glad Marshall is mad. I’m glad he cares. I’m glad he spoke up for Isaac (To the genius who asked how many catches Bruce had last week, Here’s a question for you: How many passes were thrown to Bruce? They didn’t even go his way due to heavy coverage fella.)

I expect Faulk to speak out and speak out with equvilant Ire all year long as It is not going to get better.

And BTW, while it is a No Brainer that Linehan HAS to go, if what is holding Marshall from coming back to the Rams, is Zygmunt…..um, how fast do we have to pull the trigger to let Jay go? Why isn’t it already pulled?

I think Marshall would make an excellent H.C. !!!! Linehan can’t coach his way out of a wet paper bag,SORRY!!!! That is what I think of him ??? I just can’t understand what the ownership was thinking when they hired him ??? MONEY !!!!!!!!!!!! HASLETT ???? SEND HIM PACKING now !!!!!!!
The Rams looked so bad Sunday, it made me sick to watch!!!! The Eagles on the other hand were very much prepared to play !!!! AND THEY DID!!!
I MISS ISSAC TOO!!!!!!

St. Louis loves Marshall Faulk and who wouldn’t want to see him pacing the sidelines with the Head Coach’s clipboard in hand? That said, who would wish this team on him? Marshall is one of the smartest football players I ever watched but he has no coaching experience. A head coach teaches, motivates, plans, administers and delegates.
We don’t know that he can do any of these things. His skills in these areas haven’t been tested. So how do we get him from passionate former player to Head Coach?
Make him a consultant to Shaw and Rosenbloom. Let him be their “eyes and ears” with a free hand to observe and advise them on all areas of team operations but WITHOUT the authority to inject his opinions into current operations. Let him tell the owner and team president on a daily basis what he sees going on with the team. Specifically charge him with the duty of listing strong and weak points of players and coaches alike and advise how he would address shortcomings. Make him THINK as a coach, owner and GM.
If Shaw and Rosenbloom are pleased with his analysis after a few weeks, let him know that he will be named Head Coach the day after this disasterous season concludes and let him start planning on how to fix things from then on.
Good Luck, Marshall! I hope we don’t scare you off!

i would rather see faulk as an executive. his foot ball mind would be good on the sidelines but i think having him in charge of personnel would be exactly what this franchise needs. either way would be great but the main problem with this franchise has been in terrible personnel decisions .

I’m not sure I agree with all his comments but I don’t think Marshall would have been laughing and smiling on the field after Sundays loss. He clearly has the passion that this team is sorely missing.

Faulk may have been rude to fans, but he’s brilliant on the field. I’d like to see if he could translate his on field smarts to the sideline.

I think Marshall Faulk was a true player of the game. He knows more than most which current Rams players are sincere about winning. I’d love to see him get back into the mix in St. Louis. That said, I don’t think he is ready for the HC position. I’d love to have them bring in Marty for the rest of the year just to put a bandage on the season and help evaluate for next year. Bring in Faulk to take charge of the players and maybe Marty can help groom him for the long term.
Either way, we absolutley HAVE to get rid of the current coach. OC maybe, HC definetly not. I’ve always supported our coaches, even when Martz made his mistakes, but this is absolutely pathetic to see all of our great players get washed away due to lack of pride and respect.

Anyone trying to dismiss what Faulk said doesnt have a clue. Whether he is bucking to be involved with the Rams org, or he is just doing his job for NFL Network tell me anything he said is way off base. Bottom line is Linehan needs to go. His teams have never played inspired football and the Rams are becoming the laughing stock of the NFL again under his reign. Pathetic! Kudos to Faulk for making pointed comments that needed to be said and need to be repeated until Linehan is gone. Amazing how the Rams have only had one good head coach since they came to STL 13 years ago, the rest have been under-prepared and cheap options. We need a Bill Cowher type to come in and set a new attitude for this team and organization. Not implying that Cowher would come here, he isnt that stupid.

I have been a Ram fan for a long time - all the way back to Lamar Lundy and Jon Arnette. This team is an embarassment. How can one team accumulate so many players that clearly don’t belong in the NFL? A decent coaching staff could pick 53 guys off the waiver wire, take them to camp for two weeks and give the Eagles a better game than this group did. The only hope for this team is a change of wnership that will clear out the front office and coaching staff and the majority of the roster.

Don’t we wish we had the good ol’ confounding Mike Martz’ days back, when we expected the RAMS to win, and when they didn’t we were peeved. I said it the other day and I’ll say it again, the problems are festering because we have absentee owners who are into the LA life and could care less if the RAMS get smoked again on Sunday by NY. Responsible owners would hold Shaw and Zygmunt accountable for the decisions they have made. The sad thing is this thing will not get turned around with just a different coach, nor will it get turned around soon.

I definitely agree with the point about Marshall not having a lot of love for Jackson–Last season I watched the game that honored Marshall and he was in the booth when Jackson broke a 30 yarder—except that after that play Jackson sat out the rest of the series as we tried to score without him….because he was ‘tired’ -Marshall all but called him out on national TV and implied what we were all thinking at home—Jackson doesn’t have half the heart for winning the game that Marshall did—he’s a big JD drew with dreds–send him his big paycheck and let him laugh it up with opposing players after we get the tar kicked out of us—nuff said

Marshall won’t help much if he is not ready to get rid of Linehan. The players look very unhappy. It can’t be because their checks are bouncing. Bulger looked like he was at funeral for an hour. It’s sad and as much as I like Faulk I think the problem is much more complexed.

Bernie, I have been a Rams fan since 1967, and I believe Marshall Faulk is correct in his judgement of the current leadership of the team. Steven Jackson should not have been paid the money, bottom line is he caring about the team or is he caring about himself, has he proved that he is worth 44 million, in my opinion “He is not”. Now, let’s talk about
John Shaw. In my opinion John Shaw has been a joke since he’s been with the Rams Organization. By hiring Scott Linehan, that was a big mistake to replace Mike Martz with him. Scott Linehan couldn’t coach his way out of a brown paper sack. In all the years that I’ve been a Rams fan, next to the decision to make Pat Haden the starting quarterback this decision was the second worse. Scott Linehan chose not to pay one of the Icons on the Rams team Issac Bruce with Drew Bennett. Drew Bennett has not produced in years, but yet Scott Linehan has chose to start him and what happend, the same thing that has happend in every other year that he has played, the man is injury prone. If you viewed any of the preseason games you would have seen that he drops more passes than he catches. Now, Scott has replaced Drew Bennett with Eddie Kinnison. You know, I have to wonder if Scott Linehan is being advised by his kids to make such stupid decisions. Let’s talk about the defense, it totally sucked. Where was the corner back when the Eagles kept throwing that six to seven yard pass on the right side of the field. That same pass had to be thrown at least 8 to 10 times in that game either by Donavan or the back up quaterback. I know the defense coordinator had to see the same thing I was seeing, was anything done to counter those passes……”NO”, and the result was second down and two or second down and three. This kind of coaching has to stop and right away.

This team is bad. And it starts at the top. I have never seen an organization with more monkey-d**k Vice President positions than a country bank! Chip Rosenbloom or Stan Kroenke need to go in and fire half the staff. That’s what needs to be blown up. Oh, and yeah, fire Linehan while you’re at it. He just comes off like a hump. How does organizations like the Cowboys get Jason Garrett and we get the Eeyore of head coaches. Oh bother, another loss!

— moboland
4:08 pm September 10th, 2008

Man, as bad as the Rams suck right now I wouldn’t be opposed to seeing Marshall come back ON the field.

And I’m not joking.

This team is terrible. Even a hurt, retired Faulk would bring more excitement to the team than the guys we have.

And he was right on point about Bruce. I can’t believe they cut him for Bennett.

I just heard that we Signed Tony Banks to a 7 year, $75,000,000 contract….we fired the whole coaching staff and have brought back Rich Brooks. Damn I love the Rams but somethings gotta give soon. We need a head coach that is gonna get pissed and start benching the guys we pay big bucks that go out and show no heart or passion to play the game. Hell, bench Bulger and put in anybody else. Hell, even Terry Bradshaw’s old ass could do better then Bulger at this point.

— way2funny
9:00 pm September 10th, 2008

Until Ike starts dropping balls or fumbling, let’s drop the 0 catches last week Nonsense as a way to prove he doesn’t have “it” any more. He had ZERO passes thrown his way. That has to do with coverage folks.

RE Martz…Do I long for the Martz days? Absolutely. I certainly don’t long for the Dick Vermeil days WITHOUT Martz, I’ll also make that loud and clear as well.

If management needed so desperately to make a Head Coaching change and Unfortunately becuase of the Crap that was going on between Martz, Zygmunt and others, it did have to come to that (becuase getting rid of Shaw and Zymunt wouldn’t have made sense now would it? Jesus.). But IF they were going to make a change, why not go with someone who stood a chance of establishing some leadership here.

Linehan is not and never was the answer.

To the point of wishing THIS team on Marshall? I would agree. That would NOT be fair. Axe the Headcoach NOW and let either Saunders or Haslett struggle through the rest of the year (and it IS going to be a struggle no matter who leads this group) and pitch an offer to Marshall next season……Minutes after Shaw and Zygmunt have also been shown the door.

This season is a lost cause. Let’s get through it.

And I’ll bet you dollars to donuts, that If Marshall comes aboard…..Holt Stays. Anything short of that and T-Holt is wearing Carolina Blue next season.

Guaranteed.
