SLU: Expect the unexpected

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Had you told me SLU would be 1-2 after three games, I’d have probably said they beat George Washington and then lost to Dayton and Rhody. But no. And think how close they came to being 2-1.

A few Thursday night thoughts:

First off, I hate it when you write a story about a guy and then he gets hurt and doesn’t play that night. Majerus didn’t have an update on Eberhardt’s ankle and whether or not he can play on Sunday. Majerus said that based on practice, Knollmeyer was going to go in ahead of Husak on Thursday.

SLU won despite committing 18 turnovers. The absence of a true point guard who can break a press is a problem. A lot of those turnovers were also passes that just had no business being made.

The 18 offensive rebounds for Rhode Island were the most by a SLU opponent this season. Though, with 50 missed shots — 44 field goals and six free throws — there were plenty of offensive rebounds for Rhody to get.

SLU shot an impressive 61.9 percent in the second half. That was their best half since the second half against Loyola, when they shot 70 percent.

Liddell’s 22 were the most for a SLU player since Lisch had 23 against Furman.

SLU held Rhody to .89 points per possession.

SLU had lost eight straight games to ranked opponents, and four straight to ranked opponents at home. The last win over a ranked team at home was the Louisville win in 03.

Kevin Lisch took just four shots. He took three against Detroit for a season low. With five points, he’s tied Bob Cole for No. 22 on the SLU career scoring list.

Dwayne Polk hasn’t scored in three straight games.

That was Husak’s third eight-rebound game this season. Despite not starting, he played more minutes than Knollmeyer, 20 to 15.

Paul Eckerle kept shooting and they finally started going in with him. Though Majerus admitted to a certain amount of cringing when Eckerle took the 3 with about 3 minutes left. That was a point where a lot of people — myself included — thought he’d have been better off taking some time off the clock. Majerus felt the same way, but also realized he’s been telling guys to stay aggressive.

Was it just me or did it seem like the refs let both sides get away with a lot of travelling?

I get the feeling that winning on the road in the A-10 is going to be pretty hard this year.

I was talking to Steve Lappas, who did the color for CSTV, before the game and he said that starting with the SLU-GW game, he’d worked three straight games where one of the teams was scoreless at the first media timeout. It wasn’t that bad on Thursday, but it was 6-5 at almost the 10-minute mark. But then the game really picked up the tempo after that.

The game was great and I was impressed (again) with the defensive effort. It was really great to see the shots fall, particularly when it mattered. I hope this continues and SLU has Kevin hot again soon.

The offense does have me worried. It is right to bring up the 18 turnovers. SLU definitely needs to work on those.

I only saw the game on TV, but I think you were right about the traveling.
