Bottom’s up in the A-.500

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

The Atlantic 10 standings are getting really weird and, all of a sudden, some teams need to be taking good hard look over their shoulder. Including SLU.

After Wednesday’s results, Fordham, Dayton and George Washington are tied for 11th in the league at 5-8 (and as the tiebreakers stand today, Dayton (!) would be out.) A half-game ahead of them is Rhode Island — remember them? looked like an NCAA lock? — and a full game up are Charlotte, Duquesne and SLU. Duquesne has yet to play either SLU or Charlotte, so it’s hard to break the tie there. But if SLU loses to St. Joe’s on Thursday in Philadelphia, it would join Rhode Island a half-game up on the teams fighting for the final playoff spot.

Looking at what’s left on the schedule, if SLU can beat St. Bonaventure, it should make the tournament, though it’s conceivable that a team could finish 7-9 and not qualify for Atlantic City. The league remains that tightly bunched.

SLU has one thing working for it: A home game with St. Bonaventure. (Alas, the Bonnies also play Dayton and Fordham, two of the teams chasing, or potentially chasing, SLU.) Another thing working in SLU’s favor is that Dayton plays Fordham on Saturday. So even if SLU loses to St. Joseph’s on Thursday, either Dayton or Fordham will be 5-9 at the end of the day and SLU, with a win over St. Bonaventure would be 7-8.

Here’s who everybody has left:

SLU: at St. Joseph’s, St. Bonaventure, at Duquesne

Fordham: Dayton, at Richmond, St. Bonaventure

Dayton: at Fordham, at St. Bonaventure, St. Joseph’s

Rhode Island: at La Salle, Charlotte

George Washington: at Xavier, at Charlotte, UMass.

It would appear that winning one its final three should be enough for SLU to be sure of getting into the conference tournament. And SLU would rather be potentially in a tie with Fordham, which it beat, than Dayton, which it lost two twice. The Dayton-Fordham game on Saturday in New York will be key. The loser of that game will be in danger of not making the tournament, because all of a sudden, George Washington has won four of five games.

And here’s how the conference tournament would be today: 1 Xavier vs. winner of 8 Duquesne vs. 9 SLU; 4 La Salle vs. winner of 5 Temple vs. 12 George Washington; 2 St. Joseph’s vs. winner of 7 Charlotte vs. 10 Rhode Island; 3 Richmond vs. winner of 6 UMass vs. 11 Fordham
