Fordham follow

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

For those of you who might have been listening to the Fordham radio broadcast — and I’m pretty sure there’s a fairly small overlap, if any, between people who read this blog and people who were listening to WFUV 90.7 FM — you heard me say at halftime that SLU probably wasn’t feeling all that bad about being down nine at the half because they knew they could play better than they were and they had a lot of correctable problems. I realize I didn’t say that concisely, but it was a halftime show and they had time to fill, so it was OK.

Anyway, SLU straightened up a wobbly first half ship, quickly caught up in the second half and then did everything in its power not to put the game. If they get one offensive rebound there in the final two minutes, and the game is over. But SLU managed to win, putting them tied for seventh in the league. (If the tournament started today, they’d be the No. 7 seed.) If they had lost, they’d be the 12 seed. Not that I expect George Washington to make a late season run, but Fordham now has the Colonials one game behind them.

SLU has clinched at least a .500 regular season record, and with one more win can clinch at least a winning record after the conference tournament.

The last time SLU had three overtime games in one season was 2004-05, the 9021 season. They lost all three. The last time they had four was I don’t know when. The SLU media doesn’t appear to list them before 1991. Either that or SLU just didn’t play overtime games back then.

Tommie Liddell’s 11 rebounds were the most by a SLU player since Luke had 10 against Missouri State. That was the only other double-double this season.

Lisch has had more than 20 points in three of the past five games.

SLU outrebounded Fordham by 11, it’s fourth biggest margin this season. SLU is 8-2 when outrebounding its opponent.

For only the third time this season, SLU didn’t block a shot.

Fordham’s points per possession was 1.0.

SLU’s last two opponents, UMass and Fordham, have both been almost 2 to 1 in assist-turnover ratio.

This was Tommie’s 10th double-double.

Lisch has 1,179 points, which leaves him eight back of Carol Johnson for 14th on the all-time SLU list. After that, he needs 82 to Jim Irving for 13th. That’s as far as he’ll go this year, unless SLU were to make an extended postseason run.

Liddell is four points back of Jack Mimlitz for 18th. He’ll probably get up to 15th by the end of the season.

Liddell played 41 minutes, Lisch 42. Bryant Dunston of Fordham played the whole game.

Eberhardt has made three straight 3’s at Scottrade. He’s made eight 3’s this season, all here. He’s 0 for 8 away from St. Louis.

Meyer restored some sense of normalcy, scoring 10 points on four of seven shooting.

Polk did not play the last 10 minutes of regulation or at all in overtime. He had a defensive rebound and an assist and that was it.

After going 0 for 4 in the first half, Husak was 4 for 6 in the second. This was the third time he’d fouled out this season. Strangely, SLU is 3-0 when Bryce fouls out.

Knollmeyer played five minutes, missed two shots and had a turnvoer, but Majerus keeps saying good things about what Knollmeyer is doing in his brief time out there.

In its previous two overtime periods, SLU had made 1 of 11 shots. They made 2 of 3 on Wednesday.

Here’s the plus-minus:

Lisch +7

Eckerle +7

Liddell +6

Brown +6

Eberhardt +5

Knollmeyer +2

Polk -1

Meyer -6

Husak -6

I’ll have more tomorrow. It’s late.
