The question for SLU when it faces Fordham on Wednesday night is, who guards 6-8 Bryant Dunston? Husak? Eberhardt? Meyer? Brown? (He did OK playing the 5 spot at UMass.) Do they try to stop him with size or quickness? Quickness prevailed against UMass.

In Dunston’s two games against SLU, he’s averaging 12 points and 4.5 rebounds. SLU will take those numbers this time.

Yes, Fordham has won two straight, but the Rams beat Charlotte while shooting 39.1 percent from the field. SLU has lost only one game this season to a team that shot that poorly, to Temple. Meanwhile, Charlotte, the worst shooting team in the A-10, lost to Fordham shooting just 33.9 percent from the field. That’s not all that far below Charlotte’s season average of 40.1 going into the game.

Someone asked in the comment section of a previous post about whether Luke Meyer had hit the wall, so to speak. For those who don’t actively peruse the comments — and shame on you for not — when I asked Majerus, he said I should ask Meyer. When I asked Meyer, he said:

“I’m OK. I haven’t been shooting as well as I would like, but I’m feeling OK. I didn’t have one of my best games defensively, I missed a few blockouts, missed a few shots. What really bothers me is when I miss a blockout or let a guy drive by me. That gets me. I think about that all night, on the plane ride home. That really bothers me. When you see it on film, it eats at me.”

As for what the biggest problems were on defense against UMass: “We gave up a few offensive rebounds, missed some blockouts, there were a few careless turnovers that they got 3’s off of. If we had been a little more sound with the ball and eliminated two or three 3’s in transition, that would have been huge for us.”

Meyer had some similar slumps earlier in the season and came out of it. If history holds, he should be better by the A-10 tournament. Also, last season, he had bad stats in Games 24 and 26 but had some decent games — though not dominating games — after that. But considering the way Meyer plays and the physical demands put on him in playing defense usually against a taller, heavier guy, you should expect him to be worn down.

Two other games tonight in the A-10: Charlotte, which really needs a win, travels to Richmond, which has a decent shot at a first-round bye. And Temple goes to St. Bonaventure hoping to pick up a win to keep pace with Richmond. If Richmond and Temple both win, there will be a three-way tie for second in the league with Richmond, Temple and St. Joseph’s, which is off until Sunday.
