Majerus: Meyer’s my MVP
Not that it should come as a surprise to anyone who’s paying attention, but Rick Majerus thinks Luke Meyer is his team’s MVP.
“As a first-year coach,” he said, “with a new group of guys, he’s been a guy with an exemplary work ethic and a passion for play. He’s a prototype student athlete. I wish our team was better because then he would garner national attention for being the great student athlete he is. He comes to practice every day and enjoys it. I wish he were a little more vocal. He’s a kid who can compartmentalize the college experience. He can go to a party unfettered by academic consequences and nuances. He’s getting a masters in business from one of the top business schools in the country, and when it comes time to practice, there’s not a guy on a daily basis who competes better. He enjoys drills, he loves competition, he engenders great team moral, he brings young players around. I cast my vote for Luke Meyer. I don’t know what the tradition is here, but I’ve accepted their traditions this year and I’ll change them next year. If the coach selects the MVP, I’ll give it to Luke. If the players select it and choose someone different, I’ll stand by that. But from that point on, I’ll select it and if it’s my decision, I’ll give it to Luke Meyer.”
