Harrellson: probably SLU or Kentucky

Among the interested observers at the Riverwar high school all-star game at Chaifetz Arena on Saturday was Josh Harrellson. He’s the 6-9 center/forward from St. Charles who played last season at Southwestern Illinois College and has finally gotten a release from the letter of intent he signed with Western Illinois.

Harrellson’s release isn’t yet official — he expects to get through the NCAA clearinghouse on Monday — but when it is, he said he’s looking at Kentucky, SLU, Missouri, Purdue and Indiana. He was going to make his SLU visit on Saturday, but had to push it back because he hadn’t been cleared yet. So he’ll go to Kentucky next weekend, then SLU the week after that. He said he wasn’t sure if he would make any trips after that.

He said he likes SLU because he wants to play close to home, but likes Kentucky because he thinks he can play at the top level. He likes Rick Majerus and he likes Kentucky coach Billy Gillispie. (fixed the typo in his name; betting that happens to him a lot.) “I guarantee you it will come down between those two,” he told me. “I’ll make the decision based on what’s best for me.”

He was impressed by Chaifetz Arena and the potential teammates he was watching on the court.

SLU could use Harrellson because with so many freshmen coming in, anyone with any experience will be valuable, and Harrellson - who averaged 15 points and eight rebounds at SWIC –  is a good talent to boot. He’ll have three years of eligibility left.

I asked him if SLU had recruited him out of high school. He said Brad Soderberg came to one of his games, but then no more. “I wish he would have come to more,” said Harrellson, who instead went to Western Illinois. It’s apparent from the schools showing interest that he has developed into a significant talent.

I’ll have more on the all-star game later. But it looks as if SLU has a decent shot at getting a pretty talented player.

Do the math Josh. You’re a great player with a very bright future and we need a good big man at UK. You’ll have more nationally televised games at UK in one year than you would in 20 years at St. Louis. You’ll also get to play against top tier talent, which will make your NBA stock much higher.

We’d love to see you become a UK Wildcat Josh.

Josh,

If you want to spend the next 2-3 years with a bunch of babbling idiots and uptight morons then make your way to Kentucky cause they are all there.

Tennessee would be the best choice.

That really wasn’t necessary Mr. Olton. I have lived in many places but none nicer than Lexington, KY. It’s a beautiful city with the nicest people you will find anywhere.

Wow,

Mr. Olton you are the exact reason why he should choose UK. Just like many others you have no clue what the Big Blue Nation is about. We love our basketball and we would love Josh to become a Kentucky Wildcat. It is his future we are talking about and we have alot of great reasons to say choose Kentucky. I certainly wish you had something good to say about your team instead.

GO CATS!!

Josh,
I think you have a great opportunity at Kentucky and have a good chance at being a national championship contender next year. I hope you choose Kentucky but what ever school you choose best of luck to you!

Do any of you guys really think Mr. Harrelson is going to read this story?

Don’t you trust him to be intelligent and mature enough to make the RIGHT decision for himself and his future?

(meaning, of course, the Josh Harrelson will be a Wildcat next year)

C’mon people!!!!!!!!! We’re UK!!!!!!!!!!! We don’t “beg” anyone. I remember Adolph Rupp would go to player’s houses and tell them straight up, “It’s UK son. If you wanna come we’ll be glad to have you but if you don’t then we’ll easily find someone else just as good if not better.” By the way, Rupp won nearly 900 games!!!!!!!!

6:38 pm April 13th, 2008

By the way Mr. Olton, you must be Jay Bilas or Duke Vitale’s long lost brother!!!!!! Don’t hate UK because we’re the best program ever!!!!!!! Josh Harrellson is a grown man and will make the best decision for himself and you know as well as I that if he comes to UK, he’ll be a star. But if he doesn’t come then so be it, there’s about 1,000 other prospects for 2008 including big man Ater Majok who was in town visiting UK this past weekend.

Josh, come to UK. I will be there to watch your home games and I will let you take a picture with me afterwards.

The real question is Josh do you wanna go you want to sit on a bench your freshman year in an ancient arena or do you want to start for a team playing in the best Division 1 College arena in the country. Majerus is your ticket to the NBA. Take it

Josh, We really need a big man that can assert himself in that position and you have proved you can be that person…..come on the Uk and be treated to some good hospitalily….you wont regret it….thanks for considering Uk. Jim.

Top 10 basketball cities per Media Audit (figured in percentage of population that follows NCAA hoops):

1. Lexington, KY (HOME OF THE WILDCATS!) (65.7%)
2. Raleigh-Durham (61.8%)
3. Louisville (60.8%)
4. Tucson, Ariz. (58.5%)
5. Columbus, Ohio (56.5)
6. Cincinnati (55%)
7. Columbia-Jefferson City, Missouri (53.6%)
8. Eugene-Springfield, Ore. (52.9%)
9. Syracuse, N.Y. (52.9%)
10. Columbia, S.C. (52.4%)

So, uh, where again is St. Louis on that list?

Yeah.

This is a legit question on Gillespie. How may players has he sent to the NBA? I really don’t know, but assume he has some. We in St. Louis know Majerus’s record, particularly with the big men he has coached and ended up as pros.

17.

Did Moetella go to the NBA? I know Keith Van Horn did. Has Majerus gotten anyone to the next level since the 1990’s? How about the St. Louis program - how many NBA players came out of SLU? Does SLU get the appropriate exposure to launch someone to the next level? Regardless, Mr. Harrelson should have at least enough respect from us to let him choose (UK the (UK) right (UK) school (UK) for (UK) himself (UK) - both are pretty close to home, so clearly this choice should be based on who has the better basketball tradition, facilities, and coach (UK).

Majerus has put 4 guys in the NBA in 22 years of coaching. Great record! 1 player every 5.5 years. Kentucky, under Tubby no less, has put 6 in the NBA the last 5 years. Not to mention two more going this year.

Two things: I originally spelled Gillispie’s name wrong. A quick Google check shows that apparently happens a lot. Two, this is easily the most commented on post I’ve ever had. My hat’s off to Josh.

Not to sound like a homer, because I really don’t care where Josh Harrelson goes, but I could have been coach at Kentucky and had a lot of those guys go to the NBA. The SLU program hasn’t exactly been raking in the McDonald’s All-Americans.

Gillespie has two in the NBA, Law and Wright.

21.

I don’t know much about SLU except for their weird mascot - but I do know that if you want to play college basketball and you have the skills to make it big (as apparently Josh does) there are a handful of schools that stand out above the rest: UCLA, UNC, Kentucky, Duke, and Kansas.

Rick Majerus is an awesome coach and a great guy - in fact, I find him hilarious, but SLU is nowhere near the level of thos other programs, with all due respect.

I would be very surprised if Josh doesn’t end up playing for Kentucky.

I guess someone posted a link to this blog entry on the UK message board.

Josh, stay at home and be a part of building something special at SLU.

Thanks PAL for the answer to my question.

To Robbins, no Mottola did not stick on an NBA roster. Josh Grant and Byron Wilson are two others who played for Majerus at Utah, were drafted by the NBA and did not stick. Those who did were Miller, Van Horn, Doleac, and Bogut.

Here is another legit question. How close was the KY faithful to running Gillespie out of town the first half of the season? And his name has come up as a fall back candidate for OK State. Is he in tight with T. Boone? What are the odds he will remain at KY for the next three years?

Josh, SLU offers you..

A better education you could rely on for the rest of your life. A home near your home
and a basketball program that you would aid in its rise..

Thanks Billiken for the scare tactic. BILLY IS NOT LEAVING LEXINGTON BEFORE HE CUTS DOWN NETS!

Nothing to gain, especially at OSU!

Josh, you will be welcomed with open arms and be cheered for like a rock star! Midnight Madness is a BLAST!

Go Cats!

As a Big Blue Faithful stuck in pergurtory here in the St. Louis area do not listen to the so called SLU fans. They tried to run Rick out of town earlier this year when his team scored just over 20 points. The last time SLU basketball was relevant was when Larry Hughes played here and his signing was supposed to be the first block to building a program, and what has happened since. They couldn’t put 8,000 people in the seats the last few years so they go build a smaller areana that seats only 10k and change, so that it looks better when there is only 7,000 “fans” at a game. St. Louis fans are the biggest bandwagon fans in the country. Pay them no attention.

Josh,

Avoid UK! Word around the watercooler is Billy G is either getting run out of town the next couple years or shipped off to AA. And speaking of ‘run out of town,’ ask Alex Legion what life is like if you decide to transfer. Personally, I’d rather play for Majerus, go to a great school, and be in St. Louis rather than Lexington…speaking of which, did they tell you about the chemicals they find in the water here?
