IU coaching change fallout

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

The Indiana coaching job will likely start a domino effect within the coaching industry. It won’t hit St.  Louis directly — Rick Majerus said he isn’t interested and there’s no indication that he’s what Marquette is looking for. When the school hired Crean, Majerus was at the height of his run at Utah and they went for a younger, up and comer. That’s what probably what they’ll do this time.

One name mentioned a lot in Milwaukee is Xavier’s Sean Miller, though that seems unlikely, even with the amount of money Marquette is prepared to pay. (I’ve seen $1.6 million as the amount Crean was making.) Miller can be a king in the Atlantic 10 or be in a dogfight annually in the Big East.

But Xavier, interestingly, could benefit from the change. Dustin Dow in Cincinnati theorizes that some of the players leaving Indiana could land at Xavier. And a Marquette recruit, Tyshawn Taylor from New Jersey, is apparently trying to get out of his letter of intent.

There’s an other interesting story out of Milwaukee that speculates that Indiana might not have asked Marquette’s permission to talk to Crean and that Marquette was caught so off-guard by the move that they not only never had a chance to make a counteroffer. The AD was on a plane to Denver with the women’s basketball team when Crean was trying to call him to say he was leaving.
