Maguire going to Northern Kentucky
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
Dustin Maguire, one of the four SLU players released by the school, is transferring to Division II Northern Kentucky. Since he’s going from Division I to Division II, he’ll be eligible to play right away. (Even though he redshirted last year, he would have to sit out another year if he went to a Division I school.)
Northern Kentucky is in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, which includes SIUE and UMSL, so he’ll be coming back to town every year.

When does SIUE move to D1? I thought it was next year, but your post seems to indicate otherwise.
Good luck to Dustin at N KY. I could look it up, but what city is N Ky in?
What are the chances of SLU signing another player or two prior to school starting in August?
Not that it will help, but Northern Kentucky is in Highland Heights. I think it’s near Cincinnati, but I could be wrong. I too haven’t looked it up. There’s a guy from Xavier who’s transferring to NKU as well.
It’s a five-year transition period from DII to DI, and SIUE is in that phase. I’m not sure what that precisely means for their schedule, but I would imagine they would still play some GLVC teams. If nothing else, he would come to UMSL.
Good For Dustin! NKU is very close to Cincinati and they will be playing in the brand new 9.000 seat Bank of Kentucky Center that I read will be opening soon. Their first game in the new arena will be an exhibiton againt Louisville. NKU plays good basketball and seems to be in the D-2 National Tourn. every year. If they get that big man from Xavier, the Norsemen might be in the hunt for a national title…
The assistant coach at SIUE told a friend of mine that Maguire also had offers from Drury, Southwest Baptist, Quincy and UMSL. D1’s - The University of IL- Chicago and Eastern Illinois were also interested. SIUE really wanted him but now that they are D-1, he would have had to sit another year. With three years eligibility, playing at a high level D-2 where he can get his Master’s degree was a smart move.
Best of luck!
Interesting that Illinois-Chicago was interested in his services. His former teammate, Spencer Stewart, plays there (I think).
This will be a great move for Dustin.
(And Tom T. is right - NKU is basically in the Kentucky suburbs of Cincinnati)
