Little stuff:
The annual basketball luncheon at the MAC is Nov. 4, with Rick Majerus talking about his team at 12:15 p.m., followed by questions from the audience. (Lunch is served at 11:30.) Cost is $30. For reservations, call 314-539-4470.
As my colleague Dan Caesar wrote last week, it looks like SLU games will be on WMVN, the FM station that will convert to a sports talk format on Jan. 1. The advantage there is that WMVN has a signal that can be heard through most of the region. An announcement could come this week. And Charter may well be the home for TV broadcasts.
Two big games for the women’s volleyball team this week. The team, which is ranked for the first time ever, plays Dayton on Friday and Xavier on Sunday. SLU, Dayton and Xavier are all undefeated in league play, and this weekend will likely determine who comes out on top in the division. SLU’s RPI is 12, which is really impressive, if I say so myself. Normally, a rating like that would put you in line for home matches the first week of the NCAA tournament, but the Pavilion at Chaifetz is too small and the Arena is booked. Chaifetz is hosting the A-10 tournament, Nov. 21-23.
It will be interesting to see how the men’s soccer committee looks at SLU. The team remains in the top 25 in all the national rankings, and is as high as No. 12 in the collegesoccernews.com coaches poll. But its RPI last week was 49 (before the Dayton loss) and from here, the chances for it to go up are minimal at best. So if SLU doesn’t win the league’s automatic bid, who wins out? An RPI of 60 or so or a top 25 ranking? Though I should also say that if SLU loses this weekend at Charlotte, which is ranked 23rd, it will likely drop out of the top 25.
The women’s soccer team has an RPI of 50. They’ll probably need to win the conference tournament, which is being held at Hermann Stadium, to reach the NCAAs.
November is going to be a busy month on the SLU campus.

Would Charter actually produce the broadcasts like they did a few years ago (when Cusumano and Highmark called the games), or would they just pick up the CSTV broadcasts like CW 11 did last year?
I miss the days when the majority of the games were shown on Charter. Actually, I really miss the days when the majority of the games were shown on Fox Sports Midwest.
It would be a mixture of both. If the game is produced by CSTV, Charter would pick up the broadcast. (Which makes sense; it’s a lot cheaper that way.) If it’s not a CSTV game, it would be a Cusumano-Highmark game. (Assuming they want to do it.)
Fox Sports Midwest isn’t a very good option anymore because there are too many conflicts with Blues games on Saturday night. One offshoot of SLU having its own building is that there are more Saturday night games because there are no Scottrade Center conflicts. Now, obviously you’d lay out the schedule different if you were still sharing a building, but I count four SLU home dates that are at the same time as Blues home dates.
