SLU basketball and NCAA stats

The NCAA updates its stats on Mondays. Here’s where SLU stands in some categories nationwide:

SLU is sixth in the nation in scoring defense, or fewest points allowed, at 55.6. On the other end, SLU is 297th (out of 330) in scoring at 60.6.  In defense, SLU is behind Washington State, Cleveland State, San Diego State, UC Riverside and Northwestern.

SLU continues to lead the nation in 3-point shooting defense, at 22.5 percent. And it’s not particularly close. Miami (Fla.) is second at 26 percent.

Merely as a point of reference, SLU is at 71 percent, which puts them 102nd overall. SLU’s free throw shooting has seemed horrendous, but it’s still fourth best in the league.

SLU is 298th out of 330 in steals per game, at 5.1 per game, but that’s the style of their defense, not to gamble going for steals.

As turnover prone as the Billikens may seem at times, they lead the A-10 and are 44th overall in the nation (in fewest turnovers) at just 12.4 per game. It will take a lot of doing — an awful lot of doing — but I’d be interested to see where SLU stands on turnovers per possession.

Kevin Lisch is the only Billiken to make the top 100 in any individual category. He’s 54th in the nation in free throw shooting at 85 percent.
