Majerus on Duquesne, the view from Pittsburgh, other stuff
Majerus on Duquesne: “They’re a very athletic team. They’re deep and present a lot of problems with 3’s. They spread the floor and play at a breakneck speed. There’s not a plyaer out there who’s not a stellar athlete. It will be a real challenge for us. They’ve played very purposefullly and play to the strength of their players and utilize their quickness. Their 5 man, (Damian Saunders), is an outstanding passer, maybe the best passing 5 in league. All of them rebound. It’s going to be a challenging game for us, and it will be each and every time we play. In some ways, we are polar opposites in our style of play. That’s what makes it fun for the fan to watch.”
Meanwhile in Pittsburgh, they’re wondering about the postseason. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review’s capsule notes SLU moved to Chaifetz from Kiel Center.

I should have linked to this sooner, but it took a while to go up and then I got distracted. When you follow the link, you’ll have to scroll down a bit to find the Majerus item. Anyway, after the Dayton game, Dayton Daily News columnist Tom Archdeacon and I were standing outside the SLU locker room and, well, I’ll let the other Tom take it from there. …

Elsewhere in the A-10:
Dayton, which had trouble getting to Philadelphia yesterday and spent the night in Allentown, faces La Salle. Meanwhile, Dayton star Chris Wright says he’s not thinking of transferring to a more prominent program to help his NBA chances. Apparently this was a concern in Dayton, that he would leave, sit out a year, and then be a stud in the Big East. I’d say the potential of him leaving early to try the NBA is greater, but even then, it’s a big jump.
Speaking of transfers, the earliest wayward Billiken Ruben Cotto could be back playing Division I basketball is fall of 2010. In the parlance, he’d be a 4-2-4, going from a four-year to a JC to a four-year. If he’d gone straight to another 4-year school, he’d be eligible by the second semester of next year. But by going to a JC, he can’t start till the following year.
George Washington is at St. Joe’s. I can find nothing relevant in the local papers about the game.
Big game on Thursday, when Temple plays at Xavier on ESPN.

Absolutely fantastic article by Archdeacon. Thanks for including the link.

Looks like Ruben sees it differently than you do Tom.

Well, we could debate what he means by next year. He will be eligible in 2010, which is as of today next year. If he means next season, well, there’s only way that can happen: He would have to complete his AA degree by the end of the first semester of the next academic year. In that case, he could be eligible in the second semester. I suppose that’s possible. But at the same time, if he’s not playing basketball at Harcum, and it would be incredibly difficult to graduate in that time while playing basketball, he will have not played a game or had a competitive practice in over a year. If I were the coach of the DI school he was transferring to, I think I’d suggest he practice with the team the last half of the season and be ready to go in the fall. If not, he would waste a year of eligibility playing 10 minutes a game.
Or maybe I’m just reading the rule wrong.
