Looking back at La Salle, looking forward to La Salle

A few left over odds and ends:

Majerus on his technical: “I get the technical and that’s another technical I didn’t deserve, which is another frustration I have because I didn’t swear. I said something to him and I’m just tired of the (stuff). These guys all think they’re God. I don’t know if they have any respect for St. Louis. I’m a guy known not to get on officials, I didn’t swear at that guy. I bet the film shows me right. I don’t try to give the players a copout on it, but the biggest call at Duquesne, they just took the game away from us on Kwamain’s level off [Mitchell was called for blocking which gave Duquesne a fresh shot clock rather than SLU getting the ball], there was no foul absolutely on that. And when your margin of error is so marginalized, it’s just frustrating. He wanted to show me he was in charge. I didn’t leave the box, I didn’t swear and I guess he showed me he’s in charge. I guess that just shows you his lack of self-esteem.”

SLU is trying to add another recruit for next season, a guard who can back up Mitchell and play some shooting guard as well. Martavious Irving, a guard from Fort Lauderdale, made an official visit over the weekend.

Majerus said Liddell had “a game-changing shot and made a game-changing foul.” He was referring to a point in the first half with SLU up 22-8 when Liddell took a hurried 3 and then at the other end fouled Rodney Green as he took a 3. Green made all of them to make it 22-11.

Majerus on, well, all sorts of things, but mostly the team being worn down: “We start out good, we wear down. … We’re not going to get any more athletic in the next two days. We can shoot foul shots better but that may not happen. We can deploy a little better but Lombardi had the greatest sports line of all time, Fatigue makes cowards of us all. As we get fatigued and we wear down, whether it’s by injury or exams or travel, (by) not athleticism, an accumulation of all those things, we have issues. And remember, there’s only nine guys out there and one’s Eckerle and Eckerle is what Eckerle is, he’s a great kid, I love the kid, if he can hit a jumper, great, but it’s just … We’ve got to find it in our own hearts and be resolute and determined and I thik it’s better to look at the film. It would be best if we gave them a day off Sunday. By the time we get to Philadelphia on Monday, practice, drive to Atlantic City, the day is shot. It’s like the journey of the magi. It just is what it is.”

Liddell on the injuries: “He was drawing up a play in the huddle before the second half and coach put Kyle on the board and I looked around coming out of the huddle, where was Kevin? I didn’t know if he was going to continue playing but I was glad he came back.”
“They asked (Kwamain) in the locker room if he could go or not, he said he could. He came out and played a good second half, the injuries are part of the game. We have to get treatment, fight it out.”

La Salle coach John Giannini on playing SLU twice in a row: “I think the team that loses always has the psychological advantage. That team is hungrier and has even greater respect for the other team. They’re more likely to make effective adjustments while the team that wins is afraid to make adjustments. You do lose that tiny bit of edge. I know how fortunate we were that Lisch’s 3 rimmed in and out. We know the level of teams they’ve beaten. Psychologicially, when you lose to a team, you approach it with better intangibles than when you’re coming off a win. We need to be aware of that.”

For the two teams SLU played twice this season, they lost to Richmond and Dayton the first time and won the second. They beat Duquesne the first time and lost the second.

For your record keeping purposes, here’s the plus-minus from La Salle:

Lisch 0

Conklin 0

Thompson 0

Eberhardt -1

Liddell -2

Mitchell -2

Cassity -7

Reed -9

Eckerle -9

Will be watching with a group of SLU alums in Tampa this week(end). Saturday was hell…went to the BU-UNI game at Scottrade and saw my hometown Braves give up a big lead to the eventual MVC regular and tournament champs…then went to the SLU game and saw another heart-breaker. Good thing I don’t gamble.

Thanks for the update, Tom. Hopefully the Bills can Trump the competition in A-City.

Too bad the games aren’t on TV.

I believe he was talking about the Championship Game, which will be televised.

It looks as if SLU beats La Salle that Charter will pick up the Xavier game.

Hey, Tom — Has Majerus been fined by the league or the NCAA yet for any of the stuff he’s said quite publicly about officiating?

I don’t know if he’s ever been fined. I know he’s gotten phone calls from the commissioner telling him to not do that. Not sure at what point you get more than a stern reprimand. Last year, he was told to call people who work on the scorer’s table at Charlotte and apologize for something he said during a game. That would almost have to be something to do with the shot clock.
