What’s next for Xavier?

With Sean Miller choosing to double his salary by taking the Arizona job, the A-10 has its first job opening of the offseason. Dustin Dow of the Cincinnati Enquirer has put together a list of possible candidates, all of whom seem to have strong Ohio ties. I think the list is more speculative than anything, but I think it’s also the case that Xavier will look for someone with some link to the program.

Memphis, meanwhile, which was passed over by a few big names, went with assistant coach Josh Pastner.

Prior to the announcement of Pastner, I was theorizing with someone at SLU, if someone was offered both jobs, which would you choose, Memphis or Xavier? Xavier is going to be really good next year, assuming everyone stays. (At least one recruit looks ready to bolt, and some of the players already there could move on.) Memphis has a lot more long term potential. You’re more likely to get to the Final Four at Memphis than Xavier, at least historically speaking. Memphis can probably throw more money at you, and if you had to choose between Cincinnati and Memphis, well, that’s a matter of personal taste. (Chili or ribs?)

By the way, in case you missed it, Brad Soderberg’s name came up in connection with the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo job. He didn’t get it.

At least Memphis went with an assistant who can recruit AND coach. Pastner is one of the top recruiters in the country, so Memphis won’t miss a beat next year in Borat’s favorite conference, Conference US and A. Memphis fans, just take a deep breath and thank the Almighty Lord and Savior of us all that you didn’t hire Brad Soderberg. He couldn’t recruit Jerry Reed to pickin’ convention.
