Former SLU coach Brad Soderberg has taken the job as head basketball coach at Lindenwood University. He will be introduced on Friday.

Ryan Cherekpai resigned last week after four seasons as coach at Lindenwood. The team went 19-13 last season, 11-9 in league play.

Soderberg spent the last year as interim athletics director at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, where he got his start in coaching.

Though Soderberg has sold his house in St. Charles, he can move back to his old neighborhood and have a much shorter commute.

Brad is a class act who was not treated fairly at SLU and I am glad he is back in the St. Charles area. I wish him the best in his career at Lindenwood.

Can’t get a D-I job? How long will he stay at an NAIA school?

Interesting indeed.

Congrats to Brad and good luck to the Lindenwood program.

John D, I fail to see how he was treated unfairly at SLU. He was paid several million dollars over his short tenure and was given 5 years to build a tournament team. Most coaches would do anything for that kind of money and opportunity.

In my opinion Brad Soderberg is a rare find in college athletics. He seems to emphasize both the fundamentals of basketball and the fundamentals of life. A coach with character that can be imitated rather than ignored can only help the student athlete and enhance the university. Great Hire Lindenwood!!!

I wonder if he knows that Lindenwood does not give athletic scholarships…

I agree that Brad Soderberg was treated rather poorly while at SLU and it has nothing to do with money he was paid. It seems unfair (hypocritical is probably a better word) that a SLU administration that talks about “character” and “values” to fire a coach who is great example of those values. “davidnark” is right that many coaches would literally “do anything” for the chance to make a fortune. Thankfully Soderberg embraced the stated values of the university rather than the un-stated values of college sports. I have come to know that the only real value in college athletics is winning and SLU’s handling of the Soderberg firing confirms that realization.

Don’t they give grants which is better then scholarship. So even if you do quit the team you still get to keep the grant?
